Jones Becomes Welsh Legend

Stephen Jones will become Welsh rugby's most-capped player when he earns his 101st cap in the World Cup Pool D game against Namibia on Monday.

The fly-half has returned from six weeks out with a calf injury to join back-rower Ryan Jones and prop Gethin Jenkins back in Warren Gatland's team.

Loose-head Jenkins will start his first game in nine months following toe surgery and a subsequent calf problem.

Jones will start at blind-side flanker in one of 11 Welsh changes.

The 30-year-old, who has recovered from a calf injury, replaces ankle ligament injury victim Dan Lydiate in a relatively settled Wales back row.

Jones will make his first World Cup appearance alongside captain and open-side flanker Sam Warburton and number eight Toby Faletau in New Plymouth.

It will be a far more experienced side than that which took the field against South Africa and SamoaRobert HowleyWales assistant coach

Gatland will rest Wales' record try-scoring wing Shane Williams, centre Jamie Roberts, scrum-half Mike Phillips and prop Adam Jones against group minnows Namibia while a shoulder injury keeps James Hook out.

British and Irish Lions full-back Lee Byrne replaces Hook at 15 while Leigh Halfpenny, who impressed at full-back in Wales' 17-10 win over Samoa, joins Aled Brew on the wing.

Scott Williams is called up to partner Scarlets team-mate Jonathan Davies in the centre while scrum-half Tavis Knoyle is given a chance to impress alongside his Scarlets half-back partner Stephen Jones.

Lions prop Jenkins forms a new-look front row with Lloyd Burns and Craig Mitchell while Alun Wyn Jones keeps his place in the second row.

Jones is partnered by Bradley Davies as lock Luke Charteris joins George North and Rhys Priestland in dropping to the replacements bench after the win over Samoa.

Wales coach Gatland said: "On the back of two tough and intensely physical matches we have been able to make some changes to the squad, but also bring a lot of experience into the side at the same time. Stephen, Ryan and Gethin in particular bring a wealth of experience."

The Lions trio have a combined 230 Wales caps and Scarlets number 10 Jones, who made his Wales debut against South Africa in 1998, is to feature in his fourth World Cup as well as passing 2007 World Cup captain Gareth Thomas' 100-cap milestone.

Jones' return is a boost to Wales' back row strength following Lydiate's injury and news that standby options Martyn Williams (broken arm) and Gareth Delve, who has undergone knee surgery, are unavailable.

But Wales' most experienced 2011 World Cup line-up will need a bonus point win against Namibia to remain favourites to finish behind South Africa in the group and qualify for the knockout stages.

The Pool D runners-up are likely to meet Ireland in a quarter-final in Wellington on 8 October.
