Del Potro Reaches Estoril Quarters

Juan Martin del Potro made an impressive start to his clay-court campaign as he thrashed home player Rui Machado to progress to the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open.

The Argentine is defending champion at the tournament in Portugal and showed he will take some dethroning as he swept past Machado 6-1 6-0.

Del Potro took five of his six break-point chances as he proved far too strong for his Portuguese rival, wrapping up a facile victory in just 63 minutes.

The 2009 US Open champion insisted the match had been tougher than the scoreline suggested, but conceded he was happy with his first outing on clay since competing in the Davis Cup back in April.

"I played well for only my first match after Davis Cup. The score might not have looked it but he's dangerous on clay," stated del Potro. "But I played much better than him and took all of my break points.

"I'm pleased with my performance, this was good for a first match of this part of the season."

Del Potro will now face Albert Montanes in the last eight after the Spaniard overcame American Bobby Reynolds in three sets.

Montanes lost the first set after surrendering a single break, but hit back well to close out a 4-6 6-4 6-3 triumph.
