England Suffer Windies at Lord's

Stuart Broad completed a 10-wicket match haul before England suffered a late wobble after being set 191 to beat West Indies on day four of the first Test at Lord's.

England seamer Broad took his tally of wickets in the contest to 11 as he claimed 4-93 in a second innings that saw the tourists dismissed for a stubborn 345.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul (91) and Marlon Samuels (86) had frustrated the hosts with a fifth-wicket stand of 157, but England managed to prevent a total turnaround and remained strong favourites for victory as they went back out late in the day.

But they will now have to complete the chase without captain Andrew Strauss and nightwatchman James Anderson, who both fell cheaply to Kemar Roach to leave the hosts on 10-2 at stumps.

West Indies resumed in the morning on 120-4 and gave England's bowlers precious few moments of encouragement on a wicketless morning.

On the slow surface the value of the short ball was minimised and time and again in the early exchanges on another cloudy day, edges by both batsmen fell short of the slip catchers.

Samuels comfortably beat more senior partner Chanderpaul to 50, counter-attacking after a succession of short balls with boundaries off Broad and Anderson to bring up his 98-ball half-century.

Chanderpaul continued to make steady progress and completed his own fifty with an inside edge for four past his stumps off Tim Bresnan.

The breakthrough final came with the second new ball when Broad drew the edge as Samuels drove without feet from the crease and was caught at second slip.

England then had Graeme Swann to thank as they at last sent Chanderpaul on his way just before tea, trapping the left-hander lbw while sweeping, a decision that was confirmed on review.

The Windies had by that point moved into a three-figure lead but England put themselves firmly in control as Broad claimed his 10th wicket of the match when an indecisive Darren Sammy was caught behind for 37.

Broad became only the fourth cricketer to put his name on all three Lord's honours boards - for a century, five-wicket innings figures and 10 in a Test.

Broad struck again in his next over when Roach (4) speared a head-high catch straight to point, with Denesh Ramdin (41) being bowled by Anderson and Shannon Gabriel (13) bowled by Swann (3-59) to round off the innings.

England would have hoped to survive the handful of overs before stumps with their opening pair still intact, but Strauss (1) and Anderson (6) both went after facing just seven and five balls respectively.

Jonathan Trott then barely made it through a DRS review after a Roach delivery cut back viciously onto his pads as England staggered to the close of play.
