The Dragging On Stops - Redknapp

Harry Redknapp wonders why it took the Football Association so long to make a decision regarding the England manager's job, with their hesitancy helping no-one.

Fabio Capello stepped down from the England post on 8th February, but his successor was not appointed until 1st May.

Roy Hodgson is the man charged with the task of leading the national side forward, with the West Brom boss the only man to have been approached by the FA.

That decision came as a surprise to many, with Redknapp installed as the overwhelming favourite to inherit the reins from the moment Capello packed his bags.

The Tottenham chief admits being placed under such a bright spotlight was difficult at times and he has queried why it took the FA so long to identify their top target.

"It did drag on," Redknapp said.

"I don't know why they didn't do it six weeks ago? What was the big problem? West Brom weren't going to go down.

"It was non-stop speculation."

Redknapp has always maintained his focus throughout the England saga has been on Tottenham, but he concedes that others at White Hart Lane believe the speculation did have an impact - with Spurs' results having dipped noticeably.

He said: "I think (chairman Daniel Levy) thinks it might have done, (assistant manager) Kevin Bond thinks it could have had an effect.

"He thought there was a change, but I didn't see it like that."
Settled

The issue has now been laid to rest, though, and Redknapp insists he is as committed to his role at Tottenham as he has ever been.

"I've got no thoughts with moving anywhere else," he said.

"I don't feel any different now to a few years ago. I don't feel tired and I've got a good job here.

"But I don't want to make it seem that I am chasing Daniel, asking him to give me a new contract. I'm not."
