Carysfort Girls team
Carysfort National School girls’ team made history when they reached the Division 3 final of the Leinster 2011 Junior & Primary Leinster Schools League for the first time, which was played at Lansdowne Tennis Club on May 19th in a match against Belgrove.
Carysfort reached the final with a one hundred per cent record after 3-0 wins over Mt. Anville National School 2nd team, Our Lady of Mercy A, Scoil Bhride 2, St. Pius 2, St. Oliver’s Balrothery and Mt. Anville National School.
The stakes were high as a win for the Blackrock school would secure promotion to division 2 next season.
The number one pairing of Sophie Courtney, 5th Class and Ella O’Grady of 6th Class had their toughest matches on May 7th against St Oliver’s of Balrothery, securing a valuable 9-8 victory in the end. It was followed by a 9-6 home win against Mt. Anville National School a few days later.
Carysfort sixth class pair of Katie Fitzgerald and Jenny O’Connor also had their closest match against Mt. Anville NS 1, with a 9-4 win in a rain interrupted match at Blackrock Tennis and Bowling Club on Friday, May 13th.
The number three paring for Carysfort, fifth Class duo of Rhianna McDermott and Emma Sheridan, played five matches in all, losing only seven points along the way, recording one nine love victory at Our Lady’s of Mercy in round 2.
In the away match in Terenure against St. Pius, Sarah McAleese and Ellen Ryan were selected as the number three pairing for the round 4 encounter, and won their match 9-0 to help secure yet another 3-0 victory for the Carysfort Girls.
In the final at Lansdowne Tennis Club, in the shadow of the Aviva stadium, a tough contest was expected against Belgrove, of Clontarf, with the format reverting to normal competition for the final and the best of three sets in each match.
On the day it proved insurmountable for the Carysfort National School girls, despite a brave effort, with number 2 pairing of Jenny O’Connor and Katie Fitzgerald losing their match first, 6-0 and 6-2.
In match three Rhianna and Emma battled with early nerves, levelling the match at 3 games all, after losing their opening service games. Despite their comeback Belgrove went on to win the first set 6-3 and then sealed the second 6-2 to win the match.
With the two rubbers won, the match between the top pairings was eventually called to an end, but not before Sophie Courtney and Ella O’Grady recovered the second set and the game was set for a championship tie- break.
Most of the players on the Carysfort Girls team are coached by Dave Cooney of the DC Tennis Academy www.dctennis.ie
