O'Shea Gets Nod from Trapattoni

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has opted to pick John O'Shea at right-back for Friday's vital Euro 2012 qualifier against Andorra.

O'Shea replaces Stephen Kelly on the defensive flank with Sean St Ledger taking over at centre-back from the suspended Richard Dunne.

Otherwise the side is unchanged from last month's 0-0 draw in Moscow.

Stephen Ward is retained at left-back with Glenn Whelan and Keith Andrews remaining in central midfield.

There had been some suggestions that Trapattoni might be tempted to bring Birmingham's Keith Fahey into midfield.

With Dunne ruled out after his heroic display in Moscow, St Ledger partners Leeds defender Darren O'Dea in central defence

Damien Duff and Aiden McGeady remain on the midfield flanks with Kevin Doyle partnering Robbie Keane in attack.

The Republic face Andorra and then host Armenia at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday knowing that victories in both games would certainly cement second place and a play-off berth, but could also clinch automatic qualification.

Giovanni Trapattoni's team trail leaders Russia by two points after their goalless draw in Moscow on 6 September.

However, Dick Advocaat's men will play in Slovakia on Friday knowing that defeat would cost them top spot if the Republic win their final two qualifiers.

Slovakia shocked the Russians 1-0 in Moscow last September.

Republic midfielder Glenn Whelan is on a yellow card heading into Friday's game but Trapattoni has told the Stoke player to hold nothing back in Andorra.

"He must play like he always does," added Trapattoni.

"These three points are more important than whether he gets a yellow card or not."

Friday's game is expected to be watched by a crowd of only around 800 after Uefa refused permission for it to be switched to a bigger venue in Barcelona.
