Twitter Contagion Spreads to GAA

Following Laois' defeat to Dublin in the Leinster Football Championship on Sunday, MJ Tierney was disappointed not to have been sprung from the bench and shared his feelings on the social networking website Twitter following his side's loss.

His tweet contained just the one word message "#disilusioned"

On Sunday evening on RTE the matter became a topic of discussion on The Sunday Game with pundit Kevin McStay suggesting the Laois forward should keep his opinions to himself.

“There are ways of taking bad news or tough medicine on the chin,” said former Mayo forward McStay. ”I would suggest that tweeting to the GAA public is not one of them.

“It doesn’t show a lot in the sense of teamwork or what you’re about.”

In The Irish Examiner on Tuesday Tierney questioned why his comments even came up for discussion, slamming the programme for “making something out of nothing.”

"The reality of it is that’s my private life," said Tierney. "I know Twitter is a public forum but you need to follow me to read my tweets and Des Cahill follows me.

"Why bother bringing it up? They were making something out of nothing. It says more about the quality of The Sunday Game that they have to talk about a tweet by me.

"That’s the stupidest part of it. Obviously, they haven’t much to be talking about and that’s the truth of it."

Tierney insisted in his interview that his message wasn’t directed at Laois manager Justin McNulty for not selecting him to start the game.

"It wasn’t a dig at management," he maintained. "A lot of people have taken it that way but that is not the case.

"I was disappointed. I felt I had played reasonably well in the league and not to be in the five subs that came on was disappointing.

"I put the message up when I was listening to music on the way home from the match. I also put it on Facebook and there wasn’t half as much said about it but that’s because Facebook is private.

"Somebody wrote in a newspaper that players should follow the GAA guidelines for the social media but we would have to be paid for that to happen."

MJ Tierney will now be one of the guests on The Committee Room on Wednesday and is expected to give further comment on the show on RTÉ Two at 8pm.
