Hughton and Jol at Spurs
Cardiff City have joined the seasonal managerial merry-go-round as they seek to find a club boss with Chris Hughton now the favourite among the bookmakers to take over at Cardiff.
At the same time on the banks of the Thames the new Fulham manager, Martin Jol, is reported to be also keen on having the former Republic of Ireland defender by his side at Craven Cottage, as both worked together before at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Bluebirds, who sacked manager Dave Jones on 30 May, say they have already held a number of interviews with potential candidates.
Mark Robins, who quit Barnsley in May, has revealed he has been in contact.
Cardiff, though, have distanced themselves from reports linking them with Martin O'Neill.
Watford manager Malkay Mackay has also emerged as a stronger contender, but the Hornets have released a statement saying that no "official approach for the services" of their manager has been received.
"In line with the stature of the club today, it's no surprise that the level of interest in the position has been high," said Cardiff chief executive Gethin Jenkins in a statement on the club's website.
"Over the last week we have held discussions with representatives of interested parties and have consulted with various football experts to get feedback on potential candidates."
With less than two months to go until the start of the new Championship season, Cardiff recognise the need to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible.
The new man at the helm will face a hefty rebuilding process at the club, with 12 players having left last season's squad.
But Jenkins, who is leading the search for a new manager with director Alan Whiteley, said Cardiff will not rush any decision.
"We will now take the next steps towards appointing a manager who we feel can take our club forward," Jenkins said.
"Our work will continue this week, from which a full announcement will be made on an appointment, which could be next week.
"I'm sure all Cardiff City supporters would like an announcement made as soon as possible, but based on the importance of the decision it's imperative that we consider all factors in the best interest of our club.
"Until the appointment is made it would be inappropriate for us to discuss speculation or confirm whether we have met any specific candidates."
