Djokovic Ends Mahut's Open

Defending champion Novak Djokovic beat France's Nicolas Mahut 6-0 6-1 6-1 in 74 minutes to ease into the Australian Open fourth round.

Mahut was hampered by a knee injury and never looked like threatening Djokovic's bid for a third title.

Djokovic plays either Milos Raonic or Lleyton Hewitt in the last 16.

Sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brought Portugal's Frederico Gil's Australian Open run to an emphatic end in the third round with a 6-2 6-2 6-2 win.

The Frenchman's combination of power and athleticism overwhelmed Gil who had been the first man from his country to make a Grand Slam third round.

Tsonga's victory keeps him on track for a last-eight meeting with Andy Murray.

Before a potential quarter-final with the British number one, the 26-year-old will have to negotiate his way past the winner of Kei Nishikori and Julien Benneteau's clash.

A brief lapse in concentration allowed Gil to 0-40 in the second game of the match, before Tsonga steadied himself to recover all three break-back points and breeze through the first two sets.

Gil forced a break point in the second game of the third set and another two in the fourth as Tsonga again took his foot off the pedal.

But the world number 107 could not take the chance to increase the pressure on 2008 runner-up Tsonga towards the finish.

Another of the six Frenchmen in the third round - Michael Llodra - takes on Murray at 0800 GMT on Saturday in Melbourne.
