AVB Ends Friedel's Remarkable Run

American goalkeeper Brad Friedel's record run of 310 straight Premier League starts came to an end Sunday after he was dropped by manager Andre Villas-Boas before Tottenham's 2-0 home win Sunday over Aston Villa.

France captain Hugo Lloris was selected ahead of Friedel, bringing an end to the 41-year-old American's eight-plus-year run of consecutive starts in England's top division stretching back to May 2004.

Friedel's place in the Spurs team has been under threat since Villas-Boas signed France skipper Lloris from Lyon for $12.6 million on transfer deadline day.

But the Spurs boss chose Friedel for the past four games, using Lloris only in the Europa League.

On Sunday, he decided to drop Friedel, bringing to an end a hugely impressive run for the American that began in 2004 while he was at Blackburn.

Friedel has been in stellar form for Tottenham this season, with his standout performance coming against Norwich last month.

Friedel, who has also played for Liverpool, Galatasaray and Villa, conceded two goals against Manchester United in a 3-2 win last weekend.

Lloris' introduction for Friedel was the only change to Villas-Boas' side before they captured their fourth straight league win.

Villa boss Paul Lambert kept Darren Bent on the bench despite seeing the former Spurs man rescue a point for the midlands side in their derby against West Brom last week.
