Blackburn Kean for Spurs Sherwood

Blackburn Rovers have made an approach to Tottenham for Tim Sherwood as they look to replace Steve Kean.

The Scot's turbulent 22 months in charge of Blackburn came to an end on Friday when he quit in protest at being told which players to pick.

Sherwood, who captained the club to the Premiership title in 1995, is the man Rovers want to restore stability.

Sherwood, 43, is keen to move up the ladder after four years as assistant first-team coach at Spurs.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed he will be overlooked for the role as director of football but Sherwood has an outstanding reputation as technical co-ordinator at White Hart Lane, is one of the most sought after names in the game.

Meanwhile, sources at Ewood Park told Sportsmail Kean felt he had to walk out because the club's Indian owners were trying to interfere in his selection for Saturday's game at Charlton.

Ironically the 44-year-old has faced bitter abuse from a section of fans who saw him as the symbol of the unpopular owners ever since he took over from Sam Allardyce.

Kean had been under extra pressure since last week's defeat by Middlesbrough left him two points short of the target of 16 from seven games he was set at the start of the season.

On Friday night, in a statement issued through his lawyers, Kean said: 'For reasons that I cannot discuss on legal advice, it is with deep regret, given my hard work and service for the club for a number of years, that I have been forced to resign as manager of Blackburn Rovers Football Club with immediate effect, due to my position as team manager becoming untenable.

'I wish to thank all the players and coaching staff for their great support and the majority of the fans, who now see their club heading towards an automatic promotion position back to the Premiership. I wish the club all the very best for the future.'
