Former Republic of Ireland manager, Jack Charlton, will undergo surgery on Friday after breaking his hip in a fall at his home in Morpeth, Northumberland, according to reports.
The 76-year-old former Leeds defender was at home alone when he fell down stairs and had to crawl to the phone to call for help.
His son John told the Daily Mirror: "Dad's going to have an operation on Friday to sort his hip out.
"The stairs in his house are a bit tricky and awkward and he basically fell down them on Monday night.
"It could have been a lot worse because my mum was out of the house and he was on his own.
"Luckily he managed to crawl to the phone and rang me. When I got round to the house he was sitting in his chair watching telly.
"Because of his age they want to operate on him, give him a new hip. We've all been worrying but he's going to be fine."
