O'Neill Confirms McKinlay to Backroom

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has confirmed the appointment of Billy McKinlay to his backroom team and hopes to add Tommy Wright staff next week.

Former Scottish international McKinlay played with O'Neill at Dundee United and is currently a coach at Fulham.

Wright is assistant to Stephen Lomas at Scottish Premier club St Johnstone.

"It's an ongoing process - we have to make sure their clubs are comfortable with everything, but hopefully they can be confirmed next week," said O'Neill.

O'Neill is resigned to being without top players Kyle Lafferty and Chris Brunt for his side's friendly match against Norway on 29 February.

"We have a few injuries but it gives us a chance to evaluate other players," said the new NI boss.

"Players like Dean Shiels and Michael Duff could still have international futures, while I would never shut the door on the likes of Aaron Hughes and Stephen Craigan, who have indicated a desire to retire from international football.

"At the same time, you have to respect their decisions, but I'd like to pick their brains at least, as they have a lot of experience."

McKinlay, who joined Fulham in 2004, will continue his role at Craven Cottage, but will link up with new Northern Ireland  during international breaks.

"I am honoured to accept the Assistant Manager's position with Northern Ireland," McKinlay said on Fulham's website.

"I have known Michael O'Neill for over 20 years since our days at Dundee United together and it will be great to work alongside him.

"I am excited by this opportunity to work with the squad as there are a lot of talented players from Northern Ireland and I am looking forward to our first game against Norway."
