Weather Limits Windies in Dominica

Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Rain limited the opening day of the final Test between West Indies and India in Dominica to just 31.1 overs.

Windsor Park in Roseau became Test cricket's 106th venue and India were soon dominant after opting to field.

Debutants Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards both fell cheaply as the Windies slid to 35-3 before recovering to 75-3 when the rain came after lunch.

India lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first match in Kingston by 63 runs.

Praveen Kumar made the breakthrough for the tourists inside the opening half-hour, when 21-year-old left-hander Powell was caught at second slip for three, playing defensively forward to a delivery which moved across him.

Ishant Sharma then struck twice in 12 balls, first dismissing Adrian Barath when the opener's attempted hook saw the ball crash into the stumps off his glove.

Barbadian Edwards, who has played nine one-day internationals for the Windies, appeared unfortunate to be given out caught behind by English umpire Richard Kettleborough as replays suggested the ball clipped his helmet rather than his bat as he hooked a lifting delivery.

However, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who became the highest-capped West Indian Test player after winning his 133rd cap, steadied the innings in a 40-run partnership with fellow left-hander Darren Bravo.

Only 19 deliveries were possible in the afternoon session as the rain ended proceedings for the day, and with the match scheduled in the middle of the Caribbean's hurricane season, further disruptions are expected.
