Meninga Named Kangaroos Coach

Mal Meninga has been named coach of the Australian rugby league team. He takes over from long-serving Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens on a four-year deal, which runs until the end of 2019.

“For the players, it is the ultimate privilege to the wear the colours of your country, and it is something that they all aspire to,” Meninga said. “For me, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do. It is truly an honour to be in this position, as the new coach of the Kangaroos.”

Meninga’s appointment was also made with the support of current Queensland and Australian captain Cameron Smith.

“I couldn’t think of a coach more suited to this role, given Mal’s achievements as a former Kangaroos captain and his understanding of what representing Australia means,” Smith said.

“He has a proven record at representative level, as well as a tremendous ability to help his players perform at the highest level.”

NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said the appointment was the first move towards winning the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The announcement was made at Rugby League Central in Moore Park on Thursday and brings an end to Meninga’s record-breaking reign as Queensland coach with long-time Kevin Walters expected to be named Maroons mentor.

Boks Coach Meyer Steps Down

Heyneke Meyer will not seek a renewal of his contract to coach South Africa when his current deal expires on 31 December, the South African Rugby Union has confirmed.

Meyer had said he would like to stay after leading the team to third place at the Rugby World Cup, but has made an about-turn after receiving stinging criticism of the team’s style of play and his record on transformation of the side.

South Africa were beaten 34-32 by Japan in their tournament opener before succumbing to eventual champions New Zealand in the semi-finals.

“I have always put the Springboks first in my time as coach and since returning from England I have realised that as much as I believe I still have a lot to offer, the time has come for change,” Meyer said in a press statement.

“My integrity has always been very important and I feel I can leave with my head held high. I’ve always maintained that my only motivation was to serve my country and to do what was best for the Springboks.

“I have put my heart and soul into the job and did my very best. I believe that, overall, I leave the team with much to look forward to in 2016, with new structures in place to ensure the Springboks will remain competitive on the world stage.

“The Springboks are a special team and carrying the hopes of a nation is a huge responsibility and great privilege. I realised that yet again with all the support I received from ordinary South Africans, both at the World Cup and upon our return to the country. Thank you to the countless faithful, positive and passionate supporters that have made my job as coach a joy.”

Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union, called the moment “a natural watershed”, adding: “Heyneke gave his all for the Springboks and it was a great pleasure to work with such a passionate South African. There were many highlights during his time as coach and those are the moments we will remember.”

Cheryshev Gives Rafa Real Headache

Real Madrid could face disqualification from the Copa del Rey after appearing to field an ineligible player in their 3-1 fourth-round victory over Cadiz on Wednesday night.

Denis Cheryshev had given Rafael Benítez’s side the lead at the Ramón de Carranza but the Russia international had a one-game ban hanging over his head.

The 24-year-old had picked up three yellow cards during the competition with former club Villarreal last season and this was the first opportunity the winger had to serve the accompanying ban.

But, with Benítez making a host of changes, Cheryshev’s ban was overlooked as he started against the third-tier side.

Cheryshev, who scored after three minutes against Cadiz, was taken off just after half-time by Benítez after the Cadiz fans had spent much of the first half chanting “Benítez, look at your Twitter,” and “Cheryshev can’t play”.

“We had no idea that Cheryshev was ineligible to play,” said the manager after the game. “No one informed us of this situation. As soon as we were aware we took him off.”

A double from Isco secured victory for the 19-times Copa del Rey winners, with Kike Márquez scoring a late reply for the hosts.

Cadiz would have to report the situation to the Spanish Football Federation on Thursday and the club’s Twitter feed, Cadiz-CF, said during the game: “The Board of Directors of Cadiz-CF will meet at the end of the match.”

Last season Osasuna were kicked out of the tournament for playing an ineligible player as Unai García was selected in the win over Mirandes despite being sent off the previous year.

Benítez was manager of Valencia when they were disqualified from the Copa del Rey having played too many non-EU players during a tie against Novelda in 2001.

Benítez saw his side take the lead in the third minute on Wednesday as Cheryshev arrowed home a left-footed drive after a smart pass from James Rodríguez.

Lolo Pla and Wilson Cuero came close to equalisers for the third-tier team as they looked to hit back quickly.

Cheryshev then passed up the chance to add a second with Rodríguez unable to turn home Alvaro Arbeloa’s pass as Madrid went in one ahead at the interval.

Mateo Kovacic then came on for Cheryshev just after the start of the second-half but the inclusion of the player in the starting line-up could result in Real’s expulsion from the competition.

Madrid made sure of victory on the night as Isco struck twice, grabbing his first with a well-taken effort on 65 minutes and putting the visitors further ahead nine minutes later after more smart work from Rodríguez.

The substitute Márquez reduced the arrears with two minutes remaining but it remains unclear who will advance into the fifth round.

76ers Win to Spoil Kobe Visit

The 76ers ended a 28-game losing streak that dated back to last season, dispensing with the visiting Los Angeles Lakers by a 103-91 score in future Hall of Famer Bryant's last appearance in Philly. It was the first win for the Sixers since March 25 at Denver.

"Finally," forward Nerlens Noel said.

Coach Brett Brown's team has long languished at the bottom of the NBA standings and has reeled off two losing streaks of at least 26 games in his three seasons. For one night, in front of a sellout crowd of 20,510 that came to cheer Bryant, the streaks hardly mattered.

"I'm pleased for the city," Brown said. "We don't want this streak continuing."

Hours earlier, Bryant felt the love in Philadelphia as soon as he entered the arena.

He took selfies with fans who might never see him play again, and his presence injected a playoff atmosphere into a city that has lost much of its passion for NBA basketball.

With a packed crowd standing and roaring in appreciation, Bryant was lauded like a hometown hero, not the "Hometown Zero" he once was labeled in Philadelphia tabloids.

Bryant, who will end his 20-year career this season, opened the first leg of his farewell tour in his hometown and was feted with the kind of reverence and gratitude normally reserved for a Sixers great.

"I wasn't expecting that type of reaction -- ovation," he said. "Deeply appreciative beyond belief. It was really, really special."

Playing with the shot selection of a pickup artist, Bryant tried to deliver a special performance in his finale. He buried a step-back 3-pointer off the opening tip. He hit another 3 on the next possession.

Bryant made it 3-for-3 and had the Philly crowd chanting "M-V-P!" as he turned back the clock to his championship form.

"It was a little spurt of old-school Kobe," Noel said.

Bryant said he could tell the start made the Sixers a little starstruck -- most were babies when he started his career.

"I could sense they were like, 'I really don't want to touch him.' ... 'Is this going to be an 81 type of situation?'" Bryant said. "I'm just playing possum because I know my legs ain't going to carry this energy for 48 minutes."

Bryant scored 20 points on 7-of-26 shooting and made four three-pointers

Gary Neville New Valencia Coach

Gary Neville has been appointed the new head coach of Valencia until the end of the season.

Neville has been working as an England coach and as an award-winning analyst for Sky Sports since retiring as a player in 2011 but now takes up his first managerial role.

The former Manchester United captain - whose brother Phil was named co-caretaker following Nuno's decision last week to step down as boss - has agreed a five-month contract and will continue his role in Roy Hodgson's set-up.

Neville will be unveiled to the media on Thursday afternoon (3pm, UK time) and take charge on Sunday ahead of Valencia's Champions League game against Lyon on Wednesday.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity with Valencia," Neville told the club's official website.

"Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans.

"I am really looking forward to working with the club's talented group of players and am excited about the challenge ahead."

Neville is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time, having won 20 trophies including eight Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns.

He spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford - making more than 600 appearances - and won 85 England caps.

England boss Hodgson had tipped the former defender, whose international career spanned more than a decade, to eventually make the move into management.

"He'll become a very fine manager in time," Hodgson, speaking earlier this year, said.

"I think he's a very good coach now. He'll become an even better coach with experience. He'll enjoy working with players. I think players will enjoy working with him.

"He'd be a loss to England."

The Nevilles have a connection to the Spanish side through owner Peter Lim, the Singaporean businessman who bought a stake in Salford City from the brothers and their former Manchester United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

Phil Neville, whose role is yet to be confirmed, left his own job as a pundit in June to join the coaching staff at the Mestalla.

Valencia remain in contention for the Champions League knockout stages but have struggled in the league this term, winning just five of 11 games after last season's fourth-placed finish.

Their next La Liga match is at home to champions Barcelona on Saturday and Phil Neville will take charge of that game along with co-caretaker Voro.
