AS Roma v Real Madrid - Preview

Roma manager Luciano Spalletti is not planning to "cage" Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League last-16.

Despite conceding 16 goals in the group stage, Spalletti will not sacrifice players to mark Ronaldo out of Wednesday's game.

The Portuguese forward is the Champions League's all-time record scorer with 88 goals and has 11 already this season.

"I'm not going to order three players to mark him," said Spalletti.

Speaking ahead of the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico, Spalletti added: "I don't want to say that my players have one third of Ronaldo's quality. If so, we'd need 33 players to deal with him."

Roma won just one match in the group stage and were beaten 6-1 by Barcelona.

In contrast Real Madrid won five out of six games, scoring 19 goals in the process.

But Spalletti believes his side can still cause an upset against the 10-time European champions.

The Italian took over at the Stadio Olimpico on 14 January for his second spell in charge and has seen a revival with Roma winning four out of their last five league games.

"I don't think there's a favourite," he said. "We've got a 50% chance of going through.

"I'm very optimistic, as I've seen my players improving all the time. I wouldn't be amazed if it was my team who went through."

Real Madrid will be without Gareth Bale for the game, with the Wales forward sidelined by a calf strain.

But left-back Marcelo returns to the match day squad, after missing Real's 4-2 win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend due to a dislocated shoulder.

Fact file
• The clubs have met eight times in UEFA competition with four wins for Madrid, three for Roma and one draw.

• The clubs met most recently in a pre-season friendly in Melbourne on 18 July last year, Benítez's first game as Madrid coach. Roma prevailed 7-6 on penalties after a 0-0 draw, Seydou Keita converting the winning kick after Morgan De Sanctis had saved from Lucas Vázquez.

• Their most recent official encounter was in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2007/08 when Spalletti's Roma recorded 2-1 home and away victories.

• Then as now, the first leg was at the Stadio Olimpico and though Raúl González struck first, Roma hit back through David Pizarro and Mancini to end a run of three home defeats against the Spanish side.

Zinedine Zidane Claims Castilla Focus

Zinedine Zidane has looked to temper talk of him replacing Rafael Benítez as Real Madrid manager in the wake of their 4-0 thrashing by Barcelona in Saturday’s clásico.

Benítez is under intense pressure following the defeat, just five months after taking over at the club. Zidane is currently in charge of their Castilla team and has for some time been linked with the manager’s post. However, the 43-year-old has claimed he is not interested, or ready, in taking up a promotion at the Bernabéu.

“I am coach of Castilla and Benítez of the first team. Things are fine at the moment,” Zidane is reported as saying. “I am with Castilla and if I stay at the club it is the coach of Castilla. Last year, at the end of the season, I had the feeling that I still lacked something to take over the first team.”

Benítez should remain mindful of the Frenchman’s presence, however, given he has stated on record his desire to become a manager one day, saying in an interview with the Guardian in May 2013 that he “would definitely like to run a club one day.”

Club president Florentino Pérez will speak at a press conference on Monday evening as speculation grows about the future of manager Rafael Benítez following the 4-0 home thrashing against Barcelona.

“The Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, will hold a press conference at 7.30pm CET this evening in the Santiago Bernabéu following the board meeting,” read a statement.

Initial suggestions in Spain claimed that Benítez is expected to keep his job, although Cristiano Ronaldo was reported by Fox Sports Italia to have issued an ultimatum to Pérez claiming either Benítez is sacked or he leaves.

After his team’s clásico humiliation, Benítez said: “We are all responsible and now we have to show unity in order to win the next game and give the fans something to be happy about, which is something we failed to do [against Barcelona]. We need to get over this result and focus on the next match as soon as possible.”

Happy But Not Decided - Odegaard

Martin Odegaard says he will assess his Real Madrid future at the end of pre-season, but insists he is happy at the club.

The 16-year-old moved to the Bernabeu in a high-profile transfer from Stromsgodset in January, and has made one appearance for the seniors while playing most of his football for Zinedine Zidane's Castilla side.

There had been suggestions in the Spanish press that Madrid would let him leave on loan this summer to allow him to continue his development at another top-flight club, but the Norwegian midfielder insists he is settled, bar a gripe about the state of the playing surfaces.

When asked about his future on Sunday, Odegaard said: "We'll look at it when the pre-season is over. I'm happy at Real Madrid.

"I think I can show even more than what I have done so far. I've learnt a lot both in training and in matches.

"I've been training well and I feel good. I have no specific targets for the season; all I want is to improve my game.

"I'm 16, I'm handling things as best I can and I have a long road ahead of me. I'm in no hurry and there's no reason for me to get stressed.

"Segunda B is a difficult division because there are lots of tough opponents and the pitches are often very bad."

Paul Clement Leaves Madrid

Assistant manager Paul Clement has announced he is leaving Real Madrid after the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti this week.

It was widely expected that Clement would follow the Italian out of the Bernabéu after his sacking on Monday and the Englishman took to Twitter on Friday to confirm his departure.

“It has been an honour to have worked with Carlo at the Number 1 Club in the World,” he wrote. “Thank you to all the Players, Staff and Fans. Hala Madrid.”

Clement worked with Ancelotti at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain before the duo moved to the Spanish capital in 2013 and has recently been linked with the vacant manager’s positions at Derby and Sunderland.

Alfredo Stefano di Stefano 1926 -2014

Alfredo Di Stéfano, probably the greatest player in Real Madrid’s history, has died at the age of 88.

The former Argentina, Colombia and Spain international suffered a heart attack in the street near Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium on Saturday – the day after his birthday – and had been in an induced coma in intensive care at Gregorio Marañon hospital in the centre of Madrid.

Di Stéfano – who is Real Madrid’s honorary president – was attended to by emergency medical services before being transferred to hospital. The cardiac arrest lasted 18 minutes, according to the emergency services.

Di Stéfano has had several health scares in recent years and underwent a quadruple aorta-coronary bypass with a pacemaker implanted in December 2005 after suffering a myocardial infarction. After joining Real in 1953, he helped turn them into one of the world’s leading sides, winning five straight European Cups and scoring in each final between 1956 and 1960.

The Argentina-born forward also won eight Spanish league titles and was voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959.

He left Real in 1964 at the age of 38 having scored more than 300 goals across 11 seasons. Di Stéfano played at international level for three countries but never appeared at the World Cup.

He won six caps for Argentina and played four times for Colombia during a spell in that country’s league. However, his Colombia caps are not officially recognised by Fifa. Fifa said in 1954 he could not play for Spain but reversed that decision in 1957 after he gained citizenship and he went on to win 31 caps, scoring 23 goals.

Real Open Bernabeu Gates

Microsoft has confirmed it is in talks with the Spanish football club Real Madrid to acquire naming rights to its Bernabeu Stadium.

The 85,454-seat venue is currently named after its former president Santiago Bernabeu.

Speaking on Spanish television, the president of Microsoft in Spain said discussions were at an early stage.

"They've raised... renaming the stadium and we're only talking about this possibility," said Maria Garana.

Online reaction to the news included possible new names for the stadium.

"At most the stadium will be called the Microsoft Estadio Santiago Bernabeu," said one forum member.

"The Gates Ground?" was a suggestion on Twitter by @HuffPostUK, in a nod to the company's founder, Bill Gates.

Others wondered whether Microsoft would use the opportunity to promote its products.

"Will it be called the Surface and feature players like Cristiano RonalDOS?" tweeted @tomwarren from technology news website The Verge.

The Surface is Microsoft's tablet computer and DOS was one of the company's former computer operating systems.

The announcement was not well received by all fans of the club.

"I'm a Real Madrid fan, I hate Microsoft forever if they touch anything related to Madrid," said Haidi Farnoud.

If Microsoft are successful in obtaining the naming rights, they will join a group of several other companies whose names are linked to stadiums.

In the English Premier League, the airline Emirates has a tie-in with Arsenal, while Etihad sponsors Manchester City's ground. The German club Bayern Munich play their home matches in the Allianz Arena after signing a 30-year deal with the financial services company.

But not all stadium renaming deals have been successful. When Newcastle United changed the name of their ground from St James' Park to the Sports Direct Arena in November 2011, the local council refused to use the new name on official street signs.

At the time, the council said the decision to change the name would "upset the overwhelming majority of fans".
