Barcelona Sweep Aside Sociedad

A Neymar double, a spectacular volley from Luis Suárez and a goal for Lionel Messi enabled Barcelona’s unstoppable strike force to sweep aside Real Sociedad 4-0 on Saturday and extend their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points, at least for a few hours.

Neymar slotted home a Dani Alves cross after 22 minutes and Alves was again the provider for Suárez who acrobatically beat the Real keeper Geronimo Rulli before half-time to take his tally to 11 goals in seven games.

La Liga’s top scorer Neymar took his total to 14 as he knocked in a Jérémy Mathieu cross after 53 minutes and in injury time he set up Messi to score from close range.

Barça have 33 points from 13 games, with Atlético Madrid, who face Espanyol later, on 26 points. Real Madrid, who were hammered 4-0 by Barça last Saturday and are now nine points off the pace, play Eibar on Sunday.

Astonishingly, the trio’s latest heroics meant that Messi, Neymar and Suárez have so far scored 125 goals between them in all competitions for Barça over the calendar year.

“Between them, they look for each other all the time and the objective is for them to be happy which happens when they score,” said Alves.

Suárez could have put Barça ahead within three minutes as he went through on goal but Rulli got down well to block his shot and the Real keeper had to be alert again to take the ball off the feet of Neymar, who tried to go around him.

Andrés Iniesta was close to scoring with a rare header from a Suárez cross but the ball came back off the left post.

The Sociedad coach, Eusebio Sacristán, who replaced David Moyes earlier this month, won his first game in charge against Sevilla. Yet despite his knowledge of Barça as a former player, assistant and youth team coach he was unable to do anything to head off his side’s 19th straight defeat at the Camp Nou.

Alves crossed for Neymar to slam the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot and with Barça continuing to press, it was Alves again, having been found by a raking pass from Iniesta, who sent a deep cross for Suárez to volley home.

With Barça comfortably in charge and the Real defence stretched, Neymar notched his second before Messi scored in the final moments, having hit the crossbar with a strike from the edge of the area minutes earlier.

Real Madrid v Barcelona - Preview

Andres Iniesta has reminded Real Madrid that Barcelona will be formidable, even if talisman Lionel Messi is unable to partake in El Clasico.

Argentine forward Messi has been out of action since September with a knee injury but he returned to training this week and will travel with the squad for Saturday's La Liga clash at the Bernabeu, live on Sky Sports 2 from 5pm.

"Let's hope he can play, whether that's from the start or not, because he's an essential player for us," Iniesta told the club's official website.

"We, nevertheless, have a competitive enough squad to compete with or without him in the team."

Messi, Barca's all-time leading scorer, netted 58 goals in all competitions last season in the club's Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble-winning campaign.

During his absence, Luis Suarez and Neymar have accounted for 20 of Barca's 23 goals, with Neymar now La Liga's leading scorer with 11 goals, two more than Suarez.

"Our form makes us feel confident," Iniesta added. "In our most recent games, we have been consistent in every sense.

"But we know that this won't be an easy match, it never is. Both teams have players that can change any game."

Saturday's showdown sees first and second in La Liga go head-to-head, with Luis Enrique's Barca side currently three points ahead of Real.

Barca last beat Real in the league at the Bernabeu in 2013/14 campaign with a 4-3 triumph, courtesy of a Messi hat-trick, but more memorable is their 6-2 thrashing of Real in Madrid in May 2009.

"You always remember when you win there and more so, if it's in that manner," Iniesta said. "But in order to win at the Bernabeu, you have to be at your best.

"We need to dominate the possession and not just create goalscoring chances but take them, too.

For only the second time this season, Real coach Rafa Benitez will have all of his players available for selection, including goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

A muscle injury forced the Costa Rica international, who has kept six clean sheets in nine league games, to miss Madrid's 3-2 defeat at Sevilla before the international break - Real's first loss under Benitez.

Misfiring Cristiano Ronaldo, who has failed to find the back of the net for two games, will be joined in attack by Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, who have recovered from muscular and calf injuries respectively.

And, speaking to the Real's official website, Bale revealed he was looking forward to the Clasico.

"I'm ready for battle," he said. "I'm certain you'll see an attacking game from both teams.

"It will be an even contest. It's always tough against them, but fingers crossed we're able to get more goals than them

Ronaldo Beats Raul Record

Real Madrid went top of La Liga when Cristiano Ronaldo set a club scoring record in a 3-0 stroll at home to Levante on Saturday.

Marcelo fired Real ahead in the 27th minute at the Bernabéu when he exchanged passes with Ronaldo and blasted the ball past Rubén in the Levante goal.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 three minutes later when he cracked a long-range effort into the corner, his 324th Real goal putting him one clear of Raúl. It ended a rare four-match goal drought in Spain’s top flight for the Portugal captain, his joint-worst run since he joined Real in 2009.

The substitute Jesé skipped past his marker and drove the ball high into the net to make it 3-0 eight minutes from time as Real secured a morale-boosting win as they build towards Wednesday’s Champions League Group A match at Paris Saint-Germain.

Levante squandered the few chances they created, although Deyverson did force a good save from Keylor Navas, Real’s former Levante goalkeeper, shortly before Ronaldo’s goal.

Elsewhere, Neymar netted his first four-goal haul, including two penalties, for Barcelona on Saturday. It was one of the 23-year-old’s best performances since joining in 2013 as the Spanish and European champions fought back from 1-0 down to beat a spirited Rayo Vallecano 5-2 at the Camp Nou. The visitors took a surprise lead but then Neymar got into the action with his four before he set up Luis Suárez for the fifth.

The win took Barcelona up to 18 points, behind Real Madrid on goal difference. Villarreal can reclaim top spot if they beat visiting Celta Vigo on Sunday, when Atlético Madrid play at Real Sociedad.

Barca Wait on Messi Injury

Lionel Messi is a doubt for Barcelona's Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday after he was injured in the early stages of Saturday's La Liga clash with Las Palmas.

Messi, who was captaining Barca with Andres Iniesta on the bench, asked to be substituted in the eighth minute after hurting his left knee in the Nou Camp contest.

The Argentina star went down after a clash of legs with Daniel Castellano in the third minute.

Following medical attention, he went back on, but two minutes later asked to be replaced with Munir El Haddadi coming on.

Barca later revealed Messi had been taken to hospital for tests.

Barcelona went on to win 2-1 as they bounced back from their 4-1 mauling by Celta Vigo on Wednesday.

Luis Suarez scored both goals against newly-promoted Las Palmas, netting in the 25th and 54th minutes.

Neymar also missed a penalty in the 66th minute before Las Palmas forward Jonathan Viera replied in the 88th.

Reports suggest Messi might be out of action for up to two months.
