Zidane Equals Rafa Real Record

There were whistles and some boos at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday afternoon as Real Madrid struggled to overpower La Liga midtable visitors, Sociedad Deportiva Eibar. Only wrestling the Basques to a one all draw. The visitors having earned a return to the top flight following Elche’s suspension after alleged financial irregularities. Although Eibar arrived in Primero the previous season they struggled and were relegated from the promised land in 2014. On Sunday they did not look out of place with a physical game based on speed and width that really tested Madrid many times.

In fact, they played everything that Real Madrid dislike in their opponents given they prefer to defend by being compact and tight across the midfield. Relying on the neat and tidy footwork of Luka Modric and James Rodriguez to force gaps up front. Neither of whom were available for the Eibar clash this weekend. That early industry of the visitors earning that vital goal in the fifth minute - after a dink from Fran Rico at ten paces - when the Eibar player caught Rafael Varanne out of place. All leaving keeper Kaylor Navas with no chance at close range.

The home side then struggling to create chances albeit fielding the BBC up front – Bale, Benzema and Cristiano. The problems though highlighted at the back where Daniilo, Varanne, and Pepe looked vulnerable to the speed of every Eibar attack, with only Carvajal really controlling the right flank. So Madrid notch up the third consecutive home draw and leave Zinedine Zidane facing some calls of crisis from the press and other Real watchers.

After all the coach now equals Rafa Benitez’s bad start of last season with only fifteen points from 7 games and a balance that ended of the former’s career at Madrid. But the fact that Barcelona lost away to Celta de Vigo may spare him some of further pressure – which was heaped too quickly on Rafa – as he never the media’s choice. Clearly though when Ronaldo misfires the team does similarly and too often dragging the team down too. As is his want he demands the ball all the time, even if he is the worst option, and on days like Sunday he just seemed unable to get some of the clear chances away. At one time late in the second half it made sense to take him off.

But as Ronaldo does not do substitutions it was Benzema who made way for Alvaro Morata at the start of the second half. Although also proving ineffective against an Eibar’s back four that were resolute and became firmer as the game dragged into the last quarter. The other change by Zidane being Nacho for Varanne and then late in the game Marco Asensio in the middle of the park. For once Tony Kroos looked inefficient and drifted to the right trying to seek openings up ahead. But with little success. His best move a long sweeping cross field ball to Bale on the right that ten found its way back to Ronaldo on the back post – only to go over the bar.

Clearly Bale plays within himself at Real Madrid, spending large parts of the game inactive and just tracking opponents. Against Eibar it was much of the same and to see the naturally left sided player battle on the right - is both magical and frustrating. He is much more effective in the game he plays for Wales. Or indeed at Spurs at left back before his move to Spain. But Ronaldo is an immovable commercial object at the Bernabeu and for him left means “left alone”.

Ironically though it was the Portuguese striker’s cross to the far post that found Bale’s head about ten foot in the air with the Welshman easily nodding in the equaliser. But for that moment of magic however there was lots of water carrying for Bale, as Cantona would have described it. Particularly against a team like Eibar where he was operating under limited service. At times he must go home feeling he has worked only a half day compared to his workload at White Hart Lane in the past. Meanwhile on the other side Ronald tends to squander possession even if his goal records are off the charts.

In coaching terms Sundays game was ninety minutes of frustration and for Zidane it places him with the unwanted comparison with his immediate predecessor. Albeit his former boss, Carlo Ancelotti, was in town for Champions League this week - against Atletico Madrid - that could only see the Italian squeeze a 0-0 from FC Bayern Muenchen. For Zizou though it’s a far cry from the glory of last season’s 11th Champions League win and so he now starts the usual squeamish period that affects this huge club when faced with dropped points. Yet the trickle of bad news will dissipate with the timely international break the next week with normal services resuming for the away trip to Betis on October 14th.

Funnily enough the saving grace was that Barcelona lost away to Celta de Vigo on Sunday and as such reduces any further clamour for changes. Although the away win by Atletico at Valencia places their local rivals joint top on goal average. Meanwhile Eibar can celebrate their first ever point at the Bernabeu as well-earned after an efficient performance. Totally deserved against an out of sorts Madrid.

Indeed, Ronaldo within hours of the whistle was in Lisbon opening his new hotel and Bale - who notched up his 50th goal for the club – was heading to Wales and then Austria with the Welsh national side. No doubt Bale will run off any of his frustrations quality at the Ernst Happel stadium at the weekend in Vienna.

Valencia Reach Copa Last Four

Getty Images
Valencia reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals after a Rodrigo Moreno goal earned a morale-boosting 1-0 second-leg victory at Las Palmas and a 2-1 aggregate win.

The Mestalla side have yet to win in seven La Liga matches under their coach, Gary Neville, and lie 11th in the table but this victory will ease some of the tension surrounding the club.

The game was always in the balance but Valencia worked hard defensively and had the better chances to score with Moreno slotting home after 20 minutes.

“Our fans deserved to enjoy a moment like this,” Neville said. “They have been patient with me and with the team in these past six weeks.”

“It has not been easy for us,” Rodrigo said. “It was important to advance to the next round, it gives us more confidence. We played well in the first leg but didn’t get a good result. Today we didn’t play brilliantly but we advanced, and that’s what was important.”

Sevilla eased into the last four after a Vicente Iborra penalty helped them to a 3-0 second-leg win over second-tier Mirandes and a 5-0 aggregate success.

Sevilla were firmly in charge from the start and went ahead after Sebastián Cristóforo was upended by Ion Vélez and Iborra sent the goalkeeper Raúl Fernández the wrong way with his spot kick after nine minutes.

Mirandes caused little danger and Sevilla could have added to their lead but Yevhen Konoplyanka fired over and Vitolo had a shot beaten away by Fernández in the first half.

They sealed the win after the break when the 20-year-old Juan Muñoz finished clinically after 70 minutes from a Vitolo pass and Coke headed home the third goal in stoppage time.

Sevilla have clicked into gear after a slow start to the season and have suffered only one defeat in 16 games in all competitions, moving them up to seventh in La Liga.

Barcelona reached the semi-finals on Wednesday after knocking out Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player in an earlier round.

Celta Vigo completed the semi-final lineup with a 3-2 aggregate success against Atlético Madrid on Wednesday.

Soldado Stuns Real Madrid

Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Villarreal to fall five points behind the Spanish league’s two frontrunners after Atlético Madrid pulled level with Barcelona by fighting back to win 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao.

Roberto Soldado scored Villarreal’s winner eight minutes into a first half they dominated before the hosts held off Real’s furious response after the break. Their defeat leaves Real only two points above fourth-placed Celta Vigo and three ahead of Villarreal in fifth.

The stumble will add even more pressure on Rafa Benítez after a difficult month that included a 4-0 defeat by Barcelona and disqualification from the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player.

Saul Ñíguez and Antoine Griezmann scored for Atlético. Barcelona let slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home with Deportivo on Saturday.

At Villarreal the midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos had already hit a post before Soldado, a graduate of Real’s youth academy, struck to put the home side ahead.

Real laid siege to the Villarreal goal in the second half but, despite a string of efforts, they managed only one on target and slipped to a third league defeat of the season.

They were a shadow of the side that demolished Malmo 8-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema particularly wayward.

“We were not switched on at the start,” their centre-back Pepe told Spanish television. “We are still in the fight but it’s true that we have to start games differently and better.”

Madrid Really United Says Bale

Real Madrid are a "united" club despite a difficult few weeks on and off the pitch, says Wales forward Gareth Bale.

Rafael Benitez's side lost heavily to Barcelona last month before being expelled from the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player.

However, they are just four points behind leaders Barca after a 4-1 win over Getafe on Saturday.

"What matters most is that the team are united, that we win games and try to get better every day," said Bale.

Bale scored in the win over Getafe, the Wales international's fourth La Liga goal of the season.

It was Real's first game since they were expelled from the Copa del Rey for fielding ineligible Russian winger Denis Cheryshev against third-tier Cadiz last Wednesday.

Last month Benitez, who was only appointed in the summer, received the backing of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez following his side's 4-0 defeat by Barcelona.

Speaking about his own form this season, Bale added: "Personally speaking, I feel comfortable with where I'm being played on the pitch and I always do the best I can.

"It's nice to score but the most important thing is the team. I have a good relationship with Rafa Benitez."

Cheryshev Gives Rafa Real Headache

Real Madrid could face disqualification from the Copa del Rey after appearing to field an ineligible player in their 3-1 fourth-round victory over Cadiz on Wednesday night.

Denis Cheryshev had given Rafael Benítez’s side the lead at the Ramón de Carranza but the Russia international had a one-game ban hanging over his head.

The 24-year-old had picked up three yellow cards during the competition with former club Villarreal last season and this was the first opportunity the winger had to serve the accompanying ban.

But, with Benítez making a host of changes, Cheryshev’s ban was overlooked as he started against the third-tier side.

Cheryshev, who scored after three minutes against Cadiz, was taken off just after half-time by Benítez after the Cadiz fans had spent much of the first half chanting “Benítez, look at your Twitter,” and “Cheryshev can’t play”.

“We had no idea that Cheryshev was ineligible to play,” said the manager after the game. “No one informed us of this situation. As soon as we were aware we took him off.”

A double from Isco secured victory for the 19-times Copa del Rey winners, with Kike Márquez scoring a late reply for the hosts.

Cadiz would have to report the situation to the Spanish Football Federation on Thursday and the club’s Twitter feed, Cadiz-CF, said during the game: “The Board of Directors of Cadiz-CF will meet at the end of the match.”

Last season Osasuna were kicked out of the tournament for playing an ineligible player as Unai García was selected in the win over Mirandes despite being sent off the previous year.

Benítez was manager of Valencia when they were disqualified from the Copa del Rey having played too many non-EU players during a tie against Novelda in 2001.

Benítez saw his side take the lead in the third minute on Wednesday as Cheryshev arrowed home a left-footed drive after a smart pass from James Rodríguez.

Lolo Pla and Wilson Cuero came close to equalisers for the third-tier team as they looked to hit back quickly.

Cheryshev then passed up the chance to add a second with Rodríguez unable to turn home Alvaro Arbeloa’s pass as Madrid went in one ahead at the interval.

Mateo Kovacic then came on for Cheryshev just after the start of the second-half but the inclusion of the player in the starting line-up could result in Real’s expulsion from the competition.

Madrid made sure of victory on the night as Isco struck twice, grabbing his first with a well-taken effort on 65 minutes and putting the visitors further ahead nine minutes later after more smart work from Rodríguez.

The substitute Márquez reduced the arrears with two minutes remaining but it remains unclear who will advance into the fifth round.

Neville Stands in at Valencia

Valencia’s coach, Nuno Espírito Santo, has resigned after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Sevilla left them ninth in La Liga. A Sergio Escudero goal was enough to see off Valencia at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in a match in which the visitors had both João Cancelo and Javi Fuego sent off.

Nuno, a former goalkeeper, was appointed at Mestalla in July 2014 to replace Juan Antonio Pizzi and guided the club to fourth place last season and Champions League qualification.

But with Valencia on the brink of elimination in the group stage and struggling in the league, Nuno revealed that he had told the owner, Peter Lim, that he intended to resign before Sunday’s game.

“Before the game I spoke with the president, with the owner, Peter Lim, and we have spoken after the game. We are all in agreement that the situation is not good. We all want to do the best for the club,” he said.

“It’s for that reason that I have taken the decision to leave the club. It’s been an honour to coach the club. I want to thank all the players I have worked with, Peter Lim and the fans.”

Reports in Spain suggested that Phil Neville, who has been working as an assistant to Nuno, will be asked to take training this week, with Frank Rijkaard and Michael Laudrup among the early contenders to succeed him.

Barcelona Sweep Aside Sociedad

A Neymar double, a spectacular volley from Luis Suárez and a goal for Lionel Messi enabled Barcelona’s unstoppable strike force to sweep aside Real Sociedad 4-0 on Saturday and extend their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points, at least for a few hours.

Neymar slotted home a Dani Alves cross after 22 minutes and Alves was again the provider for Suárez who acrobatically beat the Real keeper Geronimo Rulli before half-time to take his tally to 11 goals in seven games.

La Liga’s top scorer Neymar took his total to 14 as he knocked in a Jérémy Mathieu cross after 53 minutes and in injury time he set up Messi to score from close range.

Barça have 33 points from 13 games, with Atlético Madrid, who face Espanyol later, on 26 points. Real Madrid, who were hammered 4-0 by Barça last Saturday and are now nine points off the pace, play Eibar on Sunday.

Astonishingly, the trio’s latest heroics meant that Messi, Neymar and Suárez have so far scored 125 goals between them in all competitions for Barça over the calendar year.

“Between them, they look for each other all the time and the objective is for them to be happy which happens when they score,” said Alves.

Suárez could have put Barça ahead within three minutes as he went through on goal but Rulli got down well to block his shot and the Real keeper had to be alert again to take the ball off the feet of Neymar, who tried to go around him.

Andrés Iniesta was close to scoring with a rare header from a Suárez cross but the ball came back off the left post.

The Sociedad coach, Eusebio Sacristán, who replaced David Moyes earlier this month, won his first game in charge against Sevilla. Yet despite his knowledge of Barça as a former player, assistant and youth team coach he was unable to do anything to head off his side’s 19th straight defeat at the Camp Nou.

Alves crossed for Neymar to slam the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot and with Barça continuing to press, it was Alves again, having been found by a raking pass from Iniesta, who sent a deep cross for Suárez to volley home.

With Barça comfortably in charge and the Real defence stretched, Neymar notched his second before Messi scored in the final moments, having hit the crossbar with a strike from the edge of the area minutes earlier.

Griezmann Goals Beat Galatasary

Atlético Madrid eased through to the Champions League last 16 with a game to spare and eliminated Galatasaray after Antoine Griezmann’s double secured a 2-0 win at home to the Turkish side in Group C.

Atlético, the beaten finalists in 2014, needed only a draw to progress and their comfortable victory at the Vicente Calderón put them level on 10 points at the top of the group with Benfica and ahead of the Portuguese club on goal difference.

Benfica, who host Atlético in the sixth and final round of games next month, fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the Kazakh side Astana earlier on Wednesday. Galatasaray have four points in third place, with Astana on three in fourth.

Atlético are appearing in Europe’s elite club competition for the third season in a row for the first time and turned in another solid display in the Spanish capital. Griezmann, who got both goals in September’s 2-0 win at Galatasaray on matchday one, put Diego Simeone’s side ahead in the 13th minute when he was left unmarked and headed a Gabi cross firmly past Fernando Muslera.

Gabi was again the provider for the France forward’s second in the 65th minute, a tap in from close range that snuffed out any hopes of a Galatasaray comeback
