Frankel Faces Qipco Challenge

Getty Images
Frankel's team admit the threat he faces in Saturday's Qipco Champions Stakes at Ascot will be his toughest test to date when he comes up against last year's winner Cirrus Des Aigles.

The prospect of soft ground has put strains of fear into many of Frankel's huge army of followers, especially as the French raider is at home in testing conditions.

Whereas Frankel only ran for the first time over 10 furlongs in the Juddmonte International at York, Cirrus Des Aigles is as battle-hardened as they come - a fact which has not escaped Teddy Grimthorpe, owner Prince Khalid Abdullah's racing manager.

He said: "Cirrus Des Aigles has proved himself after the last two or three years.

"He's the defending champion and he came out at Longchamp and was very impressive in the Group Two.

"Certainly he's going to be a horse to be reckoned with."

Frankel does have one piece of form on soft ground, however, and whilst it was only in a maiden on his racecourse debut, he did beat John Gosden's subsequent multiple Group One-winner Nathaniel, who renews rivalry on Saturday for the first time since that race.

"He did it on soft first time out and has run on a variety of conditions," said Grimthorpe.

"He worked the other day on the racecourse at Newmarket, it could be described as soft that day, Shane (Fetherstonhaugh, work rider) got off and said he handled it very well."

Frankel's trainer Sir Henry Cecil has been fighting cancer throughout the summer but he has barely missed a morning on the gallops.

Perhaps ominously for his rivals, the 10-times champion trainer thinks the best horse in the world may be still progressing.

"I was very pleased with Frankel's final piece of work. He gives the impression that he is better than ever and still improving," said Cecil.

"I could not be happier with him. He seems full of himself and, considering the time of year, he is really good and healthy in his coat. He eats everything put in front of him.

"It will be a far from easy race with Cirrus Des Aigles and Nathaniel in the line-up.

"They are two good horses who will go in the ground and get the trip really well.

"They have to be really respected."

The one burning question after Saturday's race is whether Frankel will race again.

And while it is highly unlikely, a final decision has still to be made.

"It is entirely Prince Khalid's decision, he will make it in his own time," said Grimthorpe.

"He know this is a very public horse - he shares the horse with the public - but the decision is one he will make when he's ready."

In completing his perfect 13-from-13 record, Frankel sparked debate across the racing world as to which was his best performance.

Grimthorpe believes his seven-length victory in the Juddmonte International at York, when he was stepping up to a mile and a quarter for the first time, was his defining moment.

"I'm slightly biased, but I thought his last performance at York had all the ingredients for me - it was absolutely sensational," said Grimthorpe, who holds an executive position on the Knavesmire.

"As a two-year-old he started to prove himself exceptional and he's improved and blossomed into the horse we know.

"This year has proved how hard it is to get a top-class horse to the races.

"Henry has brought this horse 13 times to produce his best on 13 occasions.

"To have produced him without a blip is testament to Henry and his team."

Tom Queally has been the lucky man on board for each race but cannot pick out one particular highlight.

"York was a complete performance as he was completely professional," said Queally.

"The Guineas was breathtaking, it sort of had the 'wow' factor, but the Juddmonte and Queen Anne were equally as impressive.

"I've been in a very privileged position and he's been a huge part of my life.

"He's raised my profile and I'm delighted to have been associated with him."

Frankel Works Out at Newmarket

Frankel warmed up for the expected final race of his career with a workout before racing at Newmarket on Saturday.

Sir Henry Cecil's four-year-old, officially the best racehorse in the world, is due to end his glittering career in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on 20 October.

Winner of all his 13 races, Frankel was paraded in the paddock and then galloped over nine furlongs.

Cecil said: "He had a nice blow - that was exactly what we wanted."

And jockey Tom Queally said: "He felt fine. That's exactly what we were looking for as there's still a bit [of time] to go."

“It was kind of Newmarket to allow us to come and Frankel has enjoyed himself”Teddy GrimthorpePrince Khalid Abdullah's racing manager

Connections decided to recreate race conditions by parading him in the paddock, while Queally was wearing owner Prince Khalid Abdullah's silks.

He was accompanied in the gallop an hour before the start of the Cambridgeshire Day card by stable companions Specific Gravity and his half-brother Bullet Train.

Frankel's popularity has reached such heights there were barely any vantage points left in the paddock before the exercise.

And as he went past the winning post at the end of the gallop, the big crowd gave him a generous round of applause.

The horse is expected to be retired after the Ascot race and go to stud for a breeding career.

When asked if Ascot would be his final start, Cecil said: "I would think so, but the prince will make that decision."

Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: "It's amazing how many people came to see him.

"He's done something today to keep him up to speed and he's achieved it with the minimum of fuss.

"It was kind of Newmarket to allow us to come and Frankel has enjoyed himself."

Thirteen Alright for Queally & Frankel

Getty Images
Unbeaten Frankel enhanced his reputation as one of the greatest horses in history by easily taking the Juddmonte International at York.

It takes the Sir Henry Cecil-trained colt's record to 13 wins from 13 races.

Despite stepping up in distance to 10 furlongs for the first time, the world's top-rated horse (1-10) powered through the field to take a record eighth consecutive Group One victory.

The Tom Queally-ridden four-year-old won the £725,000 race by seven lengths.

Frankel has now surpassed Rock of Gibraltar's mark of seven Group One wins in a row.

Cecil, who has battled stomach cancer since 2006, was at York to see his prized asset extend his perfect record.

"It's fantastic and it's great for Yorkshire, they're very supportive of racing and deserve to see him. [It helped me feel] 20 years better," he said.

Godolphin's Farhh (10-1) finished in second place, ahead of Ballydoyle's St Nicholas Abbey (5-1) in third.

Having been slowest out of the gate and then finding himself caught in the middle of the field in the opening stages, Frankel came past St Nicholas Abbey on the near side with two furlongs to go and then eased to victory in the Ebor Festival's showpiece race, sponsored by Frankel's owner Khalid Abdullah.

"Every man and his dog had his penny's worth as to where he should run and what he should do, but to run him in the owner's race and to go and win 13 from 13 speaks for itself," said Queally, who has mounted the Newmarket horse to each of his remarkable wins.

Queally said that he was prepared for the two Ballydoyle horses Robin Hood and Windsor Palace acting as pacemakers for St Nicholas Abbey, and was grateful to Eddie Ahern for doing the same for Frankel on stable-mate Bullet Train.

"I suspected they would go a good gallop, but we had a plan in place. Eddie Ahern did a good job on Bullet Train and it panned out nicely," he said.

Uncertainty remains over how many more outings Cecil will give Frankel, but a career finale at Ascot's British Champions Day in October is a distinct possibility.

Queally and Frankel in Big York Test

Jockey Tom Queally believes he has matured in tandem with Frankel as they face possibly their biggest test yet in the Juddmonte International at York on Wednesday.

After 12 victories in 12 starts, Sir Henry Cecil's wonderhorse is stepping up to 10 furlongs for the first time after having conquered all-comers over a mile.

Frankel has been even more impressive this year and his victory by 11 lengths in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot showed how much he had matured compared to his scrambling success in the St James's Palace Stakes the previous season.

"I think he'll get it the trip and I'm looking forward to riding him," said Queally, who has partnered Frankel in all 12 victories.

"He's got a huge following now, and rightly so.

"A horse of his calibre deserves a huge following so it's good the public have latched on - we'll be doing all we can to keep them happy.

"We've both grown up nicely together."

While Cecil admits they are going into the unknown, he has no concerns by the extra two furlongs.

"Frankel seems in good order at the moment leading into the Juddmonte," said the Warren Place handler.

"I do not think the distance is going to be a problem although we are going into unknown territory."

Stablemate Twice Over, reunited with Ian Mongan after their International success in 2011, showed more certain signs of life when third in the Coral-Eclipse.

Cecil added: "Twice Over is fresh and well, in good form and deserves to take his chance.

"I do not expect him to beat Frankel but one never knows and if he gets placed it will help him earn his keep, as well as enhance his Group status."

Jockey Joseph O'Brien is excited about being involved in the race and his mount, St Nicholas Abbey, is a new threat to Frankel.

But whereas Frankel is stepping up in trip for the first time, St Nicholas Abbey's best form is over a mile and a half.

O'Brien does not expect the distance to be a problem, though.

He said: "It doesn't get much better than this, taking on Frankel with a horse like St Nicholas Abbey.

"He ran well at Ascot last time and has been in good form at home.

"The drop in trip is a question mark for some, but I don't see it being too much of a problem.

"I've never thought of a mile and a quarter being a problem for him as he's got so much speed.

"When he won the Breeders' Cup Turf, he did it with a great turn of foot and 10 furlongs with a bit of nice ground should be right up his street.

"The nice ground is what we've been waiting for."

Farhh might have been well beaten by Frankel in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, but he was only just defeated over this distance by Nathaniel in the Eclipse.

Although Farhh is in good form, trainer Saeed bin Suroor will make a last-minute decision on his participation.

He told www.godolphin.com: "Farhh is doing well but we need rain to help his chances.

"We don't want the ground to be too firm for him and we will make a final decision on Wednesday morning.

"He is in good form at the moment and I think that this is the best trip for him now.

"We are taking on Frankel again, who will be very tough to beat, but I am hopeful of a good run, providing the ground is suitable."

Sri Putra was never a factor in the Eclipse, but enjoyed a confidence-boosting course-and-distance victory in the York Stakes at the end of July.

"One of the keys to him his fast ground, which he should get at York," said trainer Roger Varian.
