Cristiano Treble Helps Sink Espanyol

Getty Images
Cristiano Ronaldo rediscovered his best form to answer critics who have suggested his powers are beginning to fade scoring another hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed Espanyol 6-0 at the Bernabeu on Sunday night.

The Portugal international converted a spot-kick in the 12th minute, before doubling his tally in the dying seconds of the first half and making it three late on.

Karim Benzema had opened the scoring for Madrid after being set up by James Rodriguez, who found the net himself between Ronaldo's first two goals to cap an impressive outing on the right wing.

Sunday's win matched the result in the first meeting between the two teams in Barcelona in September and was a third victory in four games for Zinedine Zidane, whose triumphs as Madrid boss have been similarly convincing.

Madrid remain third in La Liga, but are now trailing second-placed city rivals Atletico by just one point, after Diego Simeone's side lost to league leaders Barcelona on Saturday.

Giedrius Arlauskis' goal had been under siege with Marcelo, Ronaldo and Isco all going close before Benzema struck in the seventh minute. James sent in a superb cross from the right and the Frenchman beat his marker to the ball before heading home for his 18th league goal of the season.

Madrid immediately started pushing for a second goal and Ronaldo doubled their lead from the spot in the 12th minute, after drawing a foul from Enzo Roco.

There was no stopping Zidane's men in the opening stages and James piled even more misery on Espanyol when his 16th-minute shot took a deflection off Papa Kouly Diop before finding the net.

Benzema could have made it four shortly after following an intelligent one-two with Isco, but he aimed just wide from eight yards out.

Espanyol got their first chance of note shortly before the half-time whistle after a quick break involving Mamadou Sylla and Salva Sevilla, but the latter's attempt was too weak to worry Keylor Navas.

Ronaldo was not to be denied in the dying seconds of the first half, however, dancing past three opponents before beating Arlauskis with a powerful left-footed shot.

Benzema should have made it five at the hour mark after some good work from Ronaldo down the right, but the striker's header lacked the power and accuracy to worry Arlauskis.

Ronaldo handed the former Lyon man another gilt-edged chance after a good combination with Marcelo down the left, but Benzema once more failed to get his attempt on target.

Madrid kept on pushing for more and Ronaldo nearly got his hat-trick when he lifted a free-kick over the wall, only to see his attempt clip the top of the net.

Ronaldo eventually made it 5-0 in the 82nd minute with his 19th Liga goal of the season to draw level in the Pichichi standings with Luis Suarez. He headed home from close range after a fine cross from Jese, before Espanyol debutant Oscar Duarte beat his own goalkeeper to cap a dominant outing for the hosts.

Barcelona Reject Tunnel Threat Claims

Luis Enrique has dismissed reports that striker Luis Suárez threatened Espanyol players in the tunnel after Barcelona’s 4-1 Copa del Rey victory at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Espanyol finished the first leg of the last-16 tie with nine men after Hernán Pérez and Papakouly Diop were sent off, while there were accusations that goalkeeper Pau López stamped on Lionel Messi.

But with ill-feeling still hanging over from the 0-0 draw between the city rivals at the weekend when Barça players accused opposition fans of racially abusing Neymar, it was Suárez’s clash with Diop that caused problems after the final whistle.

According to referee Juan Martínez Munuera’s report, which has been quoted by Catalan newspaper Sport, the Senegal international told Suárez, “I shit in your whore mother”, and was shown a red card in the 75th minute.

“At the end of the game, once in the tunnel, Barça’s No9, Suárez while the Espanyol players were coming up the stairs, waited for them and shouted at them on various occasions,” read the report. “He said: ‘I’m waiting for you, come here! You’re a waste of space’. It provoked a confrontation between players of both clubs and the security guards had to get involved, as did coaches of both teams.”

Asked about the incident, Luis Enrique dismissed the accusation as “Christmas carols”, presumably in reference to the fact the match was being played on Dia de Los Reyes (Three Kings Day). “It isn’t down to the coaches or the players to keep the peace,” the Barcelona manager added. “It’s down to the referees to ensure we play football and not American football. There was some tension. I’d like it if there were more football, fewer interruptions and no injuries.

“When someone oversteps the mark, it’s down to the referees to keep order. Of course there’s tension in these games. The players know each other, they’re two teams with a special rivalry but that rivalry has to remain positive.”

But Diop, who launched into a dance routine in May 2014 when playing for Levante in response to racist chanting from Atlético Madrid fans, insisted Suárez should have been sent off as well.

“We both insulted each other. He said swear words to me, and me to him, and I get sent off. The referee told me he didn’t hear us both, only me,” Diop told Carrusel Deportivo.

“[The press] have spent all week saying we are violent and this has had its effect. [Barcelona’s players] are really good and if you cannot even touch them, they can do what they want.

“You cannot say we were violent. There wasn’t any blood – if we had wanted to, the Barça players would have gone off on stretchers.”

Espanyol received eight yellow cards and two reds during the match, although Andrés Iniesta dismissed suggestions things had gone over the top. “Violence is a very strong word, in games like this there’s a lot of rivalry and contact,” he said.

Messi Magic Stumps Espanyol

Barcelona secured a comfortable 4-1 win over nine-man Espanyol in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round-of-16 clash at the Nou Camp.

Espanyol took an early lead through former Manchester City forward Felipe Caicedo, but Barcelona replied thanks to Lionel Messi's first-half brace.

The Argentine talisman turned provider as he set up Gerard Pique to put the hosts 3-1 up and Neymar added a late fourth to give Barcelona a commanding first-leg lead.

In a fiery encounter, referee Juan Martinez Munuera dished out 11 yellow cards and two red cards as both sides looked to claim bragging rights in the Catalan derby.

The home side handed summer signing Arda Turan his debut after the club's transfer ban had been ended on Monday. Their other high-profile signing, full-back Aleix Vidal, started on the bench.

The two teams played out a goalless draw in the Primera Division on Saturday, but the hosts were on the front foot as Espanyol goalkeeper Javi Lopez's smothering block denied Neymar from giving them an early lead after eight minutes.

But Espanyol, who reached the semi-finals last year, took a shock lead moments later when Marco Asensio pounced on Dani Alves' wayward pass before teeing up Caicedo, who calmly slotted past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Luis Enrique's side equalised immediately equalised when Andres Iniesta picked out Messi with a through ball and the Argentine made no mistake in beating the advancing Lopez.

Caicedo's night ended early, however, as a leg injury prompted Espanyol boss Constantin Galca to make a change before the break, with Joan Jordan replacing him.

Messi then produced a moment of magic three minutes from half-time. Substitute Jordan impeded Turan from 30 yards out to concede a free-kick before Messi stepped up to beat Lopez with a wonderful strike that curled over the Espanyol wall and in off the underside of the bar - his 19th goal of the season.

Barcelona raced out of the blocks in the second half and grabbed a third when Iniesta spotted Messi's run on the left byline, before he picked out Pique to score from three yards.

The evening got worse for the visitors on 72 minutes when Hernan Perez picked up his second caution of the game after an off-the-ball incident with Jordi Alba and they were down to nine men three minutes later, this time Pape Diop was given his marching orders for arguing with the referee.

With two minutes to play, Neymar and Messi played a neat one-two just outside of Espanyol's penalty area, before the latter picked out the Brazilian with a lofted ball and the forward beat Lopez with a first-time volley.

The next leg will be played next Wednesday at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

Spoils Shared in Barcelona

Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez both hit the woodwork as Barcelona were held 0-0 by Espanyol in a hard-fought derby that could see Atlético Madrid go top of La Liga if they beat the bottom side Levante later on Saturday.

Barça set a Spanish record of 180 goals in 2015 but their normally prolific attack drew a blank against their local rivals who were strong in the challenge, especially in the first half, and succeeded in disrupting their play.

Messi hit the crossbar with a 30-yard free kick in the first half while Suárez, who has 26 goals this season, was surprisingly wasteful in front of an open goal in the second half with his shot hitting the post.

Barça have 39 points, a point more than Atlético, with both having played 17 games. Third-placed Real Madrid are on 36 points and are away to Valencia on Sunday.
