Cheruiyot Withdraws from Birmingham

Kenya's world champion distance runner Vivian Cheruiyot has withdrawn from Saturday's Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham due to illness.

The outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m world champion had been scheduled to run the 3,000m at the National Indoor Arena.

"Just before I began my journey to the UK, I developed flu and do not feel well enough to travel," she said.

"I need a few days off to recover so I can resume training as soon as possible in this important year."

Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Hannah England are among the Britons lining up in Birmingham, along with sprint stars Asafa Powell and Kim Collins.

And hurdles stars Liu Xiang of China and Cuba's Dayron Robles will meet for the first time since last summer's World Championships in South Korea.

Robles, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder, crossed the line first in Daegu last August but was later disqualified for impeding Xiang, who ultimately took silver.

The 25-year-old Cuban, who set the world record of 12.87 seconds in Ostrava four years ago, said: "This year is clearly important for me. I'm doing everything I can, both in and out of competition, to make sure that I'm competing at my best.

"I'm planning to run at the World Indoor Championships and, of course, I want to hold on to the Olympic title. We'll need to see what the other guys bring to the race."

Xiang returns to the National Indoor Arena for the first time since 2003 looking to close the gap on Robles and absent American David Oliver ahead of next month's World Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

"I hope the speed gap in the first half between Robles, Oliver and me can be shortened and then my confidence will be strengthened in the outdoor races," said the Chinese athlete.

Ennis will compete in both the 60m hurdles and long jump in Birmingham as she prepares to defend her pentathlon world title in Istanbul next month.

"Every competition is important in the build-up to the Champs in March and then I have to refocus on the outdoor season in what is a huge year for me and all of my fellow athletes," she said.

Farah will run in the two-mile event in Birmingham, while pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale will look to continue the stunning form that saw her move to second on the all-time list behind world indoor record holder Yelena Isinbayeva with a jump of 4.87m in France last month.
