Arsenal Nearly Make Impossible Real

The impossible proved to be just that for Arsenal, but they went down fighting in their 4-3 aggregate defeat by AC Milan in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Arsene Wenger's men kicked off against the Serie A leaders well aware that no team had ever turned around a 4-0 first-leg deficit in European club competition.

But they did not let history, or their horror-show in Italy in February, weigh on their minds as they came ever so close to a remarkable turnaround against Massimiliano Allegri's Milan.

Goals from Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky and a Robin van Persie penalty had Arsenal, who just weeks previously had been described as a club in crisis, in dreamland after an epic first half.

Milan, though, cleared their heads in the second half, while an injury to the excellent Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and an uncharacteristic wasted chance from Van Persie meant Arsenal ran out of steam.

For Wenger, it was a night of restored pride, however, it is Milan who will be in the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Despite all their courageous endeavour, Arsenal must now concentrate all of their energy on retaining a place in the top four of the Premier League to make sure such engaging European nights return next season.

Arsenal needed an early breakthrough, which came after just seven minutes when Koscielny - who had scored an own goal at Liverpool on Saturday - headed in a corner from Oxlade-Chamberlain.

After Van Persie had seen his near-post effort from a tight angle saved, there was a moment of panic in the Gunners defence when Kieran Gibbs was booked after hacking down Stephan El Shaarawy, the 19-year-old making his Champions League debut, following a poor clearance by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Arsenal were soon back on the offensive, when after 18 minutes Van Persie's curling 20-yard effort was acrobatically beaten away by Christian Abbiati.

The shaky Milan rearguard was breached again in the 25th minute. Theo Walcott surged down the right, and when his cross was half-cleared by Thiago Silva, the ball dropped to Rosicky who planted it back inside the near post.

The Emirates Stadium faithful, so seething in their criticism of Wenger and his side this season, were now in full voice as the unlikeliest of comebacks was very much now on.

Rosicky, the 31-year-old Czech, was running the midfield, more than making up for injured colleagues Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta. As half-time approached, Arsenal continued to press.

Oxlade-Chamberlain powered into the right side of the Milan penalty area, when he was sandwiched by Antonio Nocerino and Djamel Mesbah.

It seemed an age before Slovak referee Damir Skomina pointed to the spot and after another delay for the ball to be relaid, Van Persie kept his cool to smash home his 32nd goal of the season.

Despite their dominance, one break for Milan would have changed the whole dynamic of the tie.

The Italian club's big chance came just before half-time when El Shaarawy was played into acres of space on the right, but as the goal opened up, the teenager shot wide.

Arsenal started the second half on the offensive, but Milan had now regrouped and were closing down quickly, with Alex Song, the Gunners midfield enforcer, booked after 57 minutes for clattering into Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Another goal hovered closer when Gervinho went clear on the left side of the Milan box, but his deflected shot hit the legs of the keeper, with Van Persie's follow-up hit straight at a relieved Abbiati.

A careless pass from Szczesny almost proved costly as Ibrahimovic wrestled the loose ball from Song, but shot wide from 25 yards past the backtracking, and embarrassed, Arsenal number one.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was replaced by Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh as Wenger injected a new dimension to the frontline.

Nocerino should have put the result beyond any doubt when he arrived at the back post onto Alberto Aquilani's low cross, but stabbed a tame effort straight at Szczesny.

Walcott, who looked to have picked up a knock, was replaced for the final six minutes by Korean forward Park Ju-young, who has seen little action since his summer move from Monaco - but Arsenal were unable to get a late chance and Milan went through to the quarter-finals.

Van Persie Offers Critique on Football

Robin Van Persie

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has criticised unnamed "English colleagues" for their hedonistic behaviour and raised doubts over Arsenal's ability to challenge for the title.

The Dutch forward's words are not likely to find favour with Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger as he attempts to rally his squad for another tilt at the silverware that has proved elusive since the 2005 FA Cup.

Reflecting on his motivations, Van Persie rejected the notion that money or lifestyle were enough to keep him happy, but appeared to question whether young English players shared his philosophy.

"The really top players aren't fooled by riches or fame because they are fully focused with their football," he said.

"For me, it's very important to be having breakfast every morning with my two children and that wouldn't be possible if you were hanging about in a disco all night.

"When I see some of my English colleagues who are out till three in the morning, then I can only conclude that they are invariably finished at 33."

As for Arsenal's prospects of winning the Premier League title, Van Persie appeared downbeat after Arsenal again failed to mount a credible challenge last season, despite being well set going into the final third of the season.

"Every year it always goes wrong in an identical way and that is frustrating," said Van Persie. "When you look at results in the last years, then Arsenal shouldn't be talking about winning the league because too many times things have gone wrong.

"Sometimes you have to eat the truth and be realistic. But I do believe with the signing of a number of players, then next season we should be in there competing for prizes."

Last Friday Van Persie issued a statement through the Arsenal website after other comments attributed to him Sport 1 heavily criticised players at Chelsea and in Spain.

"I'm on international duty at the moment but following several reports in the media I think it's important to clarify some recent comments attributed to me.

"These reports falsely suggest that I recently made negative comments about Spanish and Chelsea players, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I haven't done an interview with Sport 1 or any other outlet in recent weeks and I've certainly not been rude as the comments suggest.

"I respect my colleagues of Spain and Chelsea and look forward to playing against them for many years to come. I sincerely hope that all football fans worldwide don't take these misleading reports seriously.

"I wish you all a great summer!"
