Rossi Blasts Valencia Stitch-Up

Valentino Rossi blasted a Spanish ‘stitch-up’ on Sunday after his Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo won the final round of the season in Valencia to take his third MotoGP world championship.

Rossi had started in last place, after being sent to the back of the grid for a penalty imposed at the previous race in Malaysia, and with his sole title rival Lorenzo on pole position. The championship leader had fought back to fourth by half distance but his hopes of taking a 10th career title, and eighth in the top category, rested on Honda’s two Spaniards getting past Lorenzo. In the end the outgoing champion Marc Márquez and Dani Pedrosa finished second and third and Rossi angrily accused them of helping their compatriot by not trying to win.

“I did what I could but it was a strange situation having Márquez as the bodyguard of Lorenzo. It is embarrassing for the sport,” Rossi told reporters after the former King Juan Carlos handed out the winner’s trophy on an all-Spanish podium. “Hopefully the sport’s authorities will be able to sort it out. It is an ugly end to what has been an attractive championship. It has not been a true championship and this should not happen in sport.”

Rossi said Lorenzo was a deserving champion but he could not understand why Honda, his former team, should want to see a Yamaha rider win. He accused Márquez of being a ‘biscottone’ – an expression used in football when two teams play out a mutually beneficial draw to the detriment of another – but said he expected no less.

Márquez said it was ‘a lack of respect’ to suggest he had not tried to win even if he recognised there would always be doubters. “I always give everything and I know there will be people that will say that I have been second because I wanted Lorenzo to win,” he said.

Lorenzo, who ended the season with seven wins to Rossi’s four and five points clear, suggested it was to be expected that his compatriots would rather see him win. “The fact that they knew what I was going for and that they are Spanish has helped me and in another race they may have tried everything to overtake,” said the new champion. “Dani did well because he could have tried a crazy overtake. We are Spanish and the title remains in Spain. If it had been in Italy and with two Italians behind Rossi then it would have been the same.”

The race had been overshadowed by controversy and bad blood since Malaysia, where Rossi allegedly kicked Márquez off his bike. Rossi denied that, accusing the Spaniard of trying to sabotage his title hopes. A bid to persuade the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn the back-of-grid penalty failed, although the appeal against the sanction remains in process. The prime ministers and media of both countries got involved in the row, while Márquez and his family filed a legal complaint after allegedly being assaulted by Italian journalists.

The race itself was far more tame, with Lorenzo leading from start to finish while Rossi climbed as far as he could and then waited to see what happened with the top three too far ahead to catch. The Italian finished 19.7 seconds behind the winner, who beat Márquez by a mere 0.2sec.

Among the cheers, whistles and boos could also be heard clearly as the top three made their way to the podium.

Valentino Rossi to Leave Ducati

Valentino Rossi will leave Ducati at the end of the season after signing a two-year contract with Yamaha.

Rossi, 33, will race alongside rival Jorge Lorenzo after rejoining the team he left at the end of 2010.

The Italian won 46 Grand Prix races and four world champion titles over a seven-year period with Yamaha.

"By signing Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, we have put together the strongest possible team," said Lin Jarvis, Yamaha managing director.

Rossi is currently eighth in the championship standings. Lorenzo leads the 2012 MotoGP World Championship by 23 points and has taken five victories from the 10 races so far.

"This announcement is once again excellent news for Yamaha," added Jarvis.

"In June, we were able to sign Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013-14 campaign and now we are able to confirm Valentino Rossi for the next two years.

"We have run this 'super team' together in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and during that time we achieved the 'triple crown' titles with rider, manufacturer and team world championship victories for three consecutive years.

"I have no doubt that, with the experience, knowledge, skills and speed of these two great champion riders, we will be able to challenge for many race wins and for the 2013 and 2014 world championship titles."

Lorenzo's current team-mate, Ben Spies, had already confirmed he will leave Yamaha at the end of the season.

Ivan Silva Tops Spanish Practice

Former world champion Valentino Rossi enjoyed a rare successful day on his under-performing Ducati when he clocked the third fastest time in rain-lashed practice for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.

Unheralded Spaniard Ivan Silva was the quickest rider on his Kawasaki, more than two seconds ahead of Dani Pedrosa on a factory Honda.

Silva made the most of being able to run in a break in the rain on a drying track in the first of Friday's two sessions.

Reigning world champion Casey Stoner of Australia was fifth fastest on his Honda with Spain's Jorge Lorenzo, the Yamaha rider who won the first race of the season in Qatar, in fourth spot.

"We go pretty well in the wet. We're happy because it confirms that the bike has the same good feeling in the wet that last year's bike did, and that's important," said Rossi.

"I felt good immediately today. We worked on the setting a bit but because we had already started with a good feeling, I was able to immediately ride at the limit and do some good times. Now we have to wait to see what the weather does tomorrow in qualifying, and especially on Sunday."

Combined times for the first two practice sessions at Spanish Grand Prix on Friday:
1. Ivan Silva (ESP/Kawasaki-FTR) 1:48.674, 2. Dani Pedrosa (Honda) at 2.106, 3. Valentino Rossi (ITA/Ducati) 2.766, 4. Jorge Lorenzo (ESP/Yamaha) 3.199. 5. Casey Stoner (AUS/Honda) 3.432, 6. Nicky Hayden (USA/Ducati) 3.580, 7. Andrea Dovizioso (ITA/Yamaha) 4.396, 8. Alvaro Bautista (ESP/Honda) 4.4492, 9. Cal Crutchlow (GBR/Yamaha) 4.678, 10. Ben Spies (USA/Yamaha) 4.735, 11. Stefan Bradl (GER/Honda) 5.481, 12. Randy de Puniet (FRA/Aprilia) 5.696

Sepang Struggle for Rossi

Valentino Rossi's 2012 MotoGP chances took a blow after set-up problems saw him finish 10th fastest on a "negative" final day of testing in Malaysia.

Seven-time champion Rossi said his Desmosedici GP12 was dogged by corner entry and riding position issues, despite traction control improvements.

"The only positive is the distance to first is a bit less, but unfortunately our position is a lot worse," he said.

Honda's Casey Stoner lead team-mate in practice Dani Pedrosa by 0.175 seconds.

“The new electronics worked well, and helped in the straight, but I'm too slow on corner entry and I cannot keep the right corner speed”Valentino Rossi

Italian Rossi, in his second season at Ducati, had managed to cut the gap to Stoner by one second, whilst his team-mate Nicky Hayden finished 11th.

"Being just behind the factory Hondas and Yamahas after the first test was positive, but everything we tried here - especially to fix our biggest problems - didn't work," said Rossi.

"We are closer to the top, but now we also have the Monster Yamahas and satellite Hondas in front of us. We are very worried for this reason especially.

"The new electronics worked well, and helped in the straight, but I'm too slow on corner entry and I cannot keep the right corner speed. I also have some movement in acceleration.

"We are not very, very far - but 0.6 seconds in the pace is quite a lot."

The 32-year-old, who had talked about retiring after the 2014 season, added that his biggest difficulty is understeer costing him time in the corners.

But he felt the GP12, which features Ducati's first aluminium twin-spar frame, was still an improvement over last year's troubled carbon fibre then part-aluminium 800cc machine, which managed only one podium.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso continued to make big strides on the Yamaha and was three tenths from Stoner on his Tech 3 machine, with Yamaha Factory Racing's 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo fourth quickest.

A further test is scheduled for Jerez in Spain (23-25 March), ahead of the first race of the 2012 season in Qatar on 8 April.
