All Wilder and Fury at Barclays

Deontay Wilder retained his WBC heavyweight championship with a devastating knockout of Artur Szpilka in the ninth round on Saturday night at the Barclays Center.

But perhaps the most dramatic point of the evening came after the fight when Wilder’s fellow heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, crashed the ring to confront his American rival.

“Anytime, any place, anywhere,” Fury cried while getting within inches of Wilder’s face. Wilder replied: “You can run around like a preacher, but I will baptise you!”

Wilder then suggested he was willing to fight fury in Britain. “We all know Fury is just a phony,” he said. “This is just an act. I’m not scared of anybody. We’ll come to your backyard. This is just an act – you’re not a real fighter. I don’t play. This isn’t wrestling. This isn’t the WWE. When you do step in that ring with me I promise you I will baptise you.

“I would love to fight him next, unfortunately. I have other mandatories due. Make the date Tyson, I promise you.”

Earlier, Wilder (36-0) knocked Szpilka out cold and flat on his back with a powerful right hand to the head. Szpilka (20-2) was out for several minutes as medics were called to the ring. He eventually slumped against the turnbuckles as doctors tended to him.

With former heavyweight champions Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis sitting ringside, Wilder recorded his 35th KO and silenced a Polish-flavoured crowd that went wild for Szpilka.

The heavyweights fought a fantastic eight rounds and were closing in on a ninth until Wilder caught the Pole flush with 36 seconds left in the round.

Charles Martin won the vacant IBF world heavyweight championship in an underwhelming bout against injured Vyacheslav Glazkov in the co-main event.

Rogan Tasted the Fury

Tyson Fury clinched the Irish heavyweight title as he stopped Martin Rogan in the fifth round in Belfast on Saturday night.

Fury, who adopted an unfamiliar southpaw stance during the bout, struggled with his timing in the early stages, but eventually proved far too powerful for his 40-year-old opponent who was floored twice before the fight was waved off.

Rogan came out all guns blazing in the opener and Fury's unexpected tactics failed to unsettle the Belfast man as he rammed home right hands.

A tentative Tyson was bullied to the ropes in the second, but he at last found his range in the third and a jab followed by a straight left sent Rogan down by the ropes.

Rogan made it through to the bell and courageously fought back in the fourth, but Fury was starting to catch his rugged opponent with increasing ease and ended the contest in the next.

A left hook followed by a right forced Rogan to cover up and Fury unleashed a chopping body shot which sent his foe crumpling to the canvas.

The Belfast man was clearly in pain as he beat the count, but his trainer stepped into the ring to bring the fight to a close.

Tyson Targets Irish Title in Belfast

Tyson Fury says winning the Irish title would be his equivalent of striking gold at London 2012.

The heavyweight, who only recently vacated the British belt, was denied the chance of competing for Ireland at the Beijing Olympics four years ago but will bid to make up for that hurt when he faces Martin Rogan on April 14.

The unbeaten Fury said: "When I knock out Rogan and get that Irish title around my waist it will be like me winning the gold medal at the Olympics.

"To win the title in the year of London 2012 will be very special."

Despite his status as a former British champion, Fury, who was born in Manchester but has ancestors from Ireland, says he "always knew" he was Irish.
Fantastic

He added: "I always knew I was Irish and now everybody knows that those who prevented me from boxing for Ireland at the Olympics in Beijing denied Ireland an Olympic heavyweight gold medallist.

"It hurt me deeply not being able to fight for Ireland at the Olympics and to win this Irish title will be just fantastic.

"I don't care about (world champions) Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko, those guys can wait because winning the Irish heavyweight championship in Belfast means everything to me."
