Rugby Championship Comes to Twickenham

Twickenham will stage the Rugby Championship Test match between Argentina and Australia later this year.

Tournament organisers SANZAAR have confirmed Saturday, October 8th as the date for a fixture that will make history as the first Rugby Championship match to be played outside any of the competing nations — Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa.

The game, which is a ‘home’ fixture for Argentina, will conclude this year’s competition. It starts on August 20th, and also incorporates venues such as Sydney, Wellington, Buenos Aires and Brisbane.

It means that Argentina and Australia will be back at Twickenham almost a year after they met each other on the same ground in a World Cup semi-final clash that the Wallabies won 29-15.

SANZAAR chief executive Andy Marinos said: “While we witness the daring and exciting brand of rugby played by southern hemisphere teams on a regular basis, last year’s Rugby World Cup well and truly showcased that skill and flair to the rest of the world.

“Now, we are thrilled to announce that two of our national teams, Argentina and Australia, will be returning to the United Kingdom some 12 months later to contest what will be a historic chapter of the Rugby Championship.”

Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie added: “We’re delighted to have the Rugby Championship coming to Twickenham Stadium this October, the first time that one of its matches has been played in England.

“After welcoming so many teams and fans here during the Rugby World Cup, it’s fantastic to be able to open our doors again.

“We were treated to a great match between these two teams in the Rugby World Cup, and I am sure that it’s set to be another high-octane encounter in the autumn.”

All Blacks Retain Bledisloe

New Zealand continued their dominance and mastery of Australia in the Rugby Championship Test at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday to retain the Bledisloe Cup, a trophy the Wallabies are now yet to hold since 2002.

The Wallabies dominated possession and territory for the opening 30 minutes of the first half, but the All Blacks then scored 15 unanswered points to take a grip on the Test as the visitors were left to lament once again poor one-on-one defence and an outgunned scrum. Ben Smith scored two tries in the final 13 minutes of the first half, including a sucker punch on half-time, to turn the tide of the match, and the Wallabies never recovered as they struggled to play catch-up in the second stanza.

Australia failed once again to involve Israel Folau to any great intent, but he did give them a late glimmer of hope with a 75-metre intercept try before New Zealand iced the result with their fifth penalty goal.

The All Blacks have now defeated Australia in 15 consecutive Tests in New Zealand, dating back to the Carisbrook Test in 2001, and their Bledisloe Cup victory celebrations were given extra fizz with grizzled prop Tony Woodcock having become just the fourth Kiwi to win 100 caps. Woodcock also celebrated having played a key role against Wallabies scrum anchor Ben Alexander, who was also guilty of costly errors around the ground.

The Wallabies looked good in claiming a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, and they can feel unlucky not to have been ahead by more. The All Blacks were fortunate not to have Ma'a Nonu sin-binned for a 20th-minute shoulder charge on James Slipper, while No.8Kieran Read could have been yellow-carded for a cynical professional foul at the ruck after a 40-metre break by Christian Leali'ifano. Australia played direct rugby and unsettled the All Blacks' lineout, but they failed to take maximum advantage of their opportunities. By contrast, the All Blacks scored at will when they had possession in dangerous positions.

Smith scored his first try after Read had claimed a midfield bomb and the All Blacks caught the Wallabies short with quick hands down the right side. The winger scored his second try after Nonu had buckled through Matt Toomua's tackle before feeding Steven Luatau to run through Alexander.

Australia could have regained the lead after half-an-hour, if not for a dubious overturned penalty 30 metres out straight in front, but they cruelled themselves in promising positions for the remainder of the match - highlighted by their inability to finish a 70-metre break by James O'Connor just after half-time. With the backline set but ignored, Alexander was penalised for not releasing after a series of bash-and-barge pick and goes from the ensuing penalty and driving maul.

The teams play a third and final Bledisloe Cup Test in Dunedin - a non-Rugby Championship fixture - in two months' time.

Richie Ready for Rugby Championship

Captain Richie McCaw will return to his open-side flanker spot as New Zealand and Australia prepare to kick-off the first four-nation Rugby Championship.

McCaw, 31, played at number eight in the All Blacks 42-10 win against Ireland, but Kieran Read has been handed the role for Saturday's Test.

Ma'a Nonu steps in for injured vice-captain Conrad Smith at outside centre.

The Rugby Championship is replacing the Tri-Nations as the major international tournament in the southern hemisphere.

Argentina have joined Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to make it a four-team competition.

The opening match in the ANZ Stadium, Sydney at 02:05 BST also represents the start of the now annual three-Test series Bledisloe Cup which is contested by the two nations.

Australia won the final Tri-Nations, but have not held the Bledisloe Cup since 2002.

"We were fortunate enough to win the Tri-Nations for the first time in 10 years last year," Wallabies captain Will Genia said. "But outside of the Rugby World Cup there is nothing bigger than the Bledisloe."

Fellow Rugby Championship sides South Africa and Argentina begin their campaign on the same day at 15:00 BST in the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

The New 2012 Rugby Championship

SANZAR have confirmed that the expansion of the TriNations tournament by including Argentina from 2012 will mean that the name of the tournament to "The Rugby Championship" and the dates for the new tournament have been released.

Whilst SANZAR have released the dates and the new name for the tournament the venues for next year have not yet been finalised.

After several months of negotiations with the Union Argentina de Rugby (UAR) and the International Rugby Board (IRB), the SANZAR Joint Venture partners have invited Argentina to join the tournament. An agreement confirming Argentina's participation was signed in Auckland recently.

"The invitation to Argentina to join the Championship is a defining moment for Southern Hemisphere rugby and significant for world rugby," said SANZAR CEO, Greg Peters.

"The regular participation of Argentina at a higher level is long overdue and we are excited about their inclusion in The Rugby Championship. Playing in the Championship will have significant benefits for Argentinian rugby as a whole and will bring new energy to the jewel in the crown of SANZAR.

"The Pumas, as they showed at the recent Rugby World Cup, play an exciting and different brand of rugby to the other three teams, which will definitely add a new dimension," Peters said.

The new name of The Rugby Championship reflects its claim to be the ultimate contest, featuring teams that are currently ranked first, second, fourth and seventh in the world.

"The Rugby Championship is an annual contest between the ‘best-of-the-best' in world rugby - nations who have won six of the seven Rugby World Cups," said Peters.

The President of the UAR, Luis Castillo, has described his country's inclusion as an historic moment for rugby in Argentina.

"The Argentine Rugby Union and Argentinean rugby community is proud to be part of this great tournament," he said. "We will work to maintain high standards in our rugby, with our ultimate goal being to keep generating resources for the development of rugby at the clubs," Castillo said.

UAR High Performance Chairman, Manuel Galindo, added: "For years Argentinean Rugby has been seeking to participate regularly in a tournament like this. Playing in The Rugby Championship makes us really proud and will compel us to work harder at what we are doing. We must celebrate being part of this tournament," he said.

Argentina's participation in The Rugby Championship has been welcomed by the SANZAR Joint Venture partners.

Australian Rugby Union (ARU) Managing Director and CEO, John O'Neill said: "Argentina is a proud rugby nation and their passionate charge to the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup in 2007 was certainly a feature of that tournament in France.

"They have waited a long time to play in a regular competition at the highest level and their inclusion into The Rugby Championship from 2012 provides that opportunity.

"The expansion of the Championship, following this year's new-look format for Super Rugby with the addition of a 15th team in the Melbourne Rebels, is also further proof that SANZAR continues to be the innovative leader of the international game.

"We have come a long way since the professional era dawned with a Super 12 competition and a two-round Tri-Nations series between the Wallabies, All Blacks and Springboks.

"Our international footprint has been significantly increased at both Super Rugby and Test level and the launching of The Rugby Championship next year will be the latest exciting chapter in the ongoing evolution of SANZAR."

South African Rugby Union (SARU) CEO, Jurie Roux said: "This is a significant moment in the history of Southern Hemisphere rugby and marks the launching pad to a dramatically changed landscape.

"The inclusion of South Africa's old friends from Argentina is a great day for rugby and recognises the rich history and passion for the sport in the rugby community in that country.

"It will add a new flavour and dimension to SANZAR rugby and offers the prospect of promoting rugby in other South American nations.

"It also ensures a more logical and balanced Championship with fixtures and travel evened out across the region."

The CEO of the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU), Steve Tew added: "The 2011 Rugby World Cup demonstrated exactly how exciting matches between our four countries can be.

"Argentina fully deserves to be part of the best annual rugby competition in the world and their presence in the Championship – as well as the inclusion of Sevens rugby in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro – help the global expansion of the game.

"Outside of the Rugby World Cup, the Pumas last played in New Zealand in June 2004. As we saw during the tournament, their colourful and lively fans will be sure to add something special to The Rugby Championship.

"This Championship will ensure fans get to see more of the outstanding, hard hitting and exciting rugby for which our SANZAR nations are known as well as the flair and unpredictable style of rugby that Argentina is sure to bring," Tew said.

Former Pumas scrumhalf, Agustin Pichot, the UAR's SANZAR Representative who has led its negotiations with SANZAR, said Argentinean rugby as a whole should be proud of this achievement.

"After many years of history and the hard work of many generations of players on and off the pitch, Argentinean rugby will be part of the toughest and most prestigious tournament in the Southern Hemisphere," Pichot said.

SANZAR has confirmed the draw for the inaugural edition of The Rugby Championship in 2012, which sees each side facing the others twice – home and away – for a total of 12 matches.

The 2012 Championship will kick-off on 18 August 2012 and conclude on 6 October 2012.

"Adding another country will have an impact on the travel schedules," Peters said.

"To balance the additional travel requirements, the fixtures have been scheduled in two-week blocks with week-long travel byes in-between. This will ensure there is adequate recovery time for the teams," he said.
