England Win Retains Top Ranking

England secured their first win of the year and ensured they would start the summer on top of the world rankings as they defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the second Test.

Chasing 94 to end a four-match losing streak, England did not allow memories of their fourth-innings capitulation for 72 against Pakistan earlier in the year affect them.

Captain Andrew Strauss did fall for duck in the first over, but Alastair Cook hit a fluent 49 not out and Kevin Pietersen made an explosive 42no — hitting a match-winning six midway through the final afternoon at the P Sara Stadium.

Graeme Swann had earlier taken two wickets, finishing with six in the innings and match figures of 10 for 181. Play resumed with Sri Lanka 33 ahead on 218 for six, with England eventually claiming the final four wickets for 60 runs.

It took the entire morning session and there was no shortage of talking points - with dropped catches, a DRS reprieve for Mahela Jayawardene and a frustrating last-wicket partnership that added 28 to the England chase. Swann, whose double strike in the penultimate over last night tipped the balance of the match in England’s favour, almost struck with the fourth ball of the morning.

He surprised Angelo Mathews with some sharp turn but Cook was unable to claim a tough low catch at short-leg. Mathews had a second life on 12, Swann again the bowler and Cook grassing a second chance.

Jayawardene, resuming on 55, had added just three when James Anderson won an lbw verdict against him. He immediately called for a review and there was enough evidence of an inside edge to over-rule the initial call.

Swann finally got his reward at the third time of asking, Jayawardene gloving a near undroppable chance to the grateful Cook to go for 64. England were suitably delighted to see the back of a man whose series tally comes to 354 at an average of 88.5.

His namesake Prasanna Jayawardene detained England for just six balls before being bowled around his legs to give Swann his sixth wicket. It is the second time Swann has achieved the feat following his return of 10 for 217 against Bangladesh in March 2010.

Mathews took his cue to attack, thrashing Tim Bresnan for four over mid-on, but lost another partner when Rangana Herath nicked Samit Patel to Anderson at slip. Last man Suranga Lakmal survived a review off his third delivery and kept Mathews company for 10 overs as he compiled 46.

Steven Finn saw off Mathews five balls after joining the attack, with Strauss taking a good running catch just before lunch and keeping the chase under three figures.

Sri Lanka opened with spin at both ends and Strauss’ mood nosedived when he was bowled for a six-ball duck by Tillakaratne Dilshan. The off-spinner had also dismissed Strauss in the first innings and, having answered his critics with a gutsy 61 in that knock, his frustration here was palpable.

Nerves were tested when Jonathan Trott survived an lbw appeal — and a subsequent referral — against Herath before he and Cook got the scoreboard moving with a series of singles. Cook picked up the pace with three boundaries in the space of seven deliveries but Trott was gone lbw for five when Herath gambled on a second review and won.

That left England on 31 for two, with first-innings centurion Pietersen next up. He was off the mark with a brisk single and Cook added a fourth boundary when he cut Dilshan hard past point.

England’s fifty came up as Cook drilled Suraj Randiv for four through extra-cover. Pietersen was not to be outdone, lifting successive Herath deliveries for six and four in the next over and flashing Dilshan to the cover boundary.

With three needed to win, Pietersen whipped Dilshan into the on-side for a second six to end a disappointing winter programme for England on a celebratory note.

Swanny Sinks Sri Lanka

Off-spinner Graeme Swann grabbed four wickets to leave a rejuvenated England on the brink of a series-levelling win in the second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Sri Lanka, trailing by 185 runs on the first innings, ended the fourth day's play at 6-218 in their second innings, a lead of 33 runs with only four wickets in hand on a wearing P. Sara Oval pitch.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 55 and Angelo Mathews was on three.

Swann claimed 4-82 including the prized scalps of Tillakaratne Dilshan for 35 and Kumar Sangakkara for 21.

England, who lost the first Test in Galle, need a win to level the series and retain their No.1 ranking.

Dilshan was unfortunate to depart, caught in the slips off Swann, as TV replays proved inconclusive whether the ball had gone off the bat.

Third umpire Rod Tucker reviewed Dilshan's challenge for more than five minutes before upholding on-field official Bruce Oxenford's decision to give the batsman out.

He walked off clearly unhappy with the decision.

Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford immediately went up to match referee Javagal Srinath to ask why benefit of doubt had not been given to the batsman, as is the norm in cricket.

The infra-red Hot Spot technology, which could have determined an edge, is not being used for the series.

Earlier in the day, Dilshan was fined 10 per cent of his match fee for over-the-top appealing during the Test.

Bowling during England's first innings on day three, Dilshan charged towards the striker's end celebrating a dismissal even before the decision had been given, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.

Swann Stems Sri Lankan Test

England bounced back after being spun out cheaply by Sri Lanka to leave the first Test evenly poised at the Galle International Stadium.

At the end of an eventful second day's play in which 17 wickets tumbled on a slow pitch, Sri Lanka led the tourists by 209 runs with five second innings wickets in hand.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath grabbed six wickets as England were bowled out for 193 in their first innings after skipper Mahela Jayawardene's 180 had lifted Sri Lanka to 318 earlier in the day.

But the hosts slumped to 5-84 in their second knock, four of those wickets falling to off-spinner Graeme Swann, to set up a thrilling finale.

Swann, who had failed to take a wicket in the first innings, ripped through the top order in the final session of play.

At stumps, Dinesh Chandimal was unbeaten on 17 and Suraj Randiv was on two.

England lasted just 46.4 overs as the world's number one Test side, still to recover from a 3-0 thrashing by Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year, once again fumbled against spin.

Ian Bell top-scored with 52, but England lost their way before defiant batting by the tailenders pushed the total from a shaky 6-92.

England will slip to number two behind South Africa in the official rankings if they lose the two-Test series

Graeme Swann New Twenty20 Captain

Graeme Swann will lead England for the first time in two Twenty20 matches against West Indies later this month.

Captain Stuart Broad and vice-captain Eoin Morgan are both unavailable because of shoulder injuries.

Off-spinner Swann, 32, is in charge of a 14-man squad for the games at The Oval on 23 and 25 September.

Yorkshire wicketkeeper-batsman Jonathan Bairstow and Hampshire left-arm spinner Danny Briggs are the two uncapped players named in the squad.

England were faced with a dilemma when Broad was diagnosed with a torn shoulder muscle on Monday that will keep him on the sidelines for six weeks.

With Kevin Pietersen continuing his rest period, Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan and one-day captain Alastair Cook had made it clear they would be interested in leading the side in the shortest format of the game.

However national selector Geoff Miller decided Swann was to become the fifth man to lead the side this summer.

"Graeme Swann is a highly-respected member of the England side," said Miller.

"His experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable when he leads a young England team next week - a role he is very much looking forward to."

Ten players involved in the Twenty20 victory over India in August have been retained, with James Anderson, Bairstow, Scott Borthwick and Briggs completing the party.

Anderson earns a recall having not played a Twenty20 for England since November 2009 while Borthwick rejoins the squad after making his international debut against Ireland in Dublin last month.

Bairstow was also included in the squad for the one-day international against Ireland but did not feature while Briggs, who took part in the England Lions tours of Australia and the Caribbean last winter, has been impressive in the shorter format for Hampshire this season.

England Twenty20 squad v West Indies: Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Scott Borthwick (Durham), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Danny Briggs (Hampshire), Jos Buttler (Somerset), Jade Dernbach (Surrey), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Craig Kieswetter (Somerset), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Ben Stokes (Durham).
