Chelsea v Paris Saint German - Preview

Getty Images
Guus Hiddink has defended Diego Costa after Paris St Germain branded the Chelsea striker a fraud ahead of Wednesday's Champions League showdown at Stamford Bridge.

PSG's social media team upped the ante on the eve of the last-16, second-leg tie with a video montage of masked super heroes titled 'Spot the fraud', which also included Costa, who has been playing with a protective mask due to a broken nose.

Manager Laurent Blanc warned his PSG players to stay cool when facing Costa, who has scored 10 goals in 14 games under Hiddink, but has just one Champions League goal in two seasons and 14 games with the Blues.

Costa, available after missing Saturday's 1-1 draw with Stoke as a precaution over a minor tendon problem, has a reputation for riling opponents.

He has never been sent off for Chelsea, although he has served two retrospective three-match domestic bans in his two seasons in London.

"I'm very proud of him the way he's playing and, going not over the edge, but he likes to fight in the real way of the game," said Hiddink, whose side are looking to get back into the tie after losing the first leg in Paris 2-1.

"That's what we like. I protect him and support him when he's doing what he has done in my period at Chelsea.

"He scored recently in not the worst league in the world. In the Premier League he frequently is scoring now, since December, January.

"Before he had this problem of not scoring, as did the team. Let's see and hope he can make it to the European level as well."

Hiddink also issued a robust defence of Eden Hazard ahead of the game.

The Belgium playmaker, Chelsea's leading performer in last season's Premier League and Capital One Cup double, has struggled for form this campaign.

On the eve of the first leg, Hazard suggested a move to PSG would be difficult to turn down, stoking speculation he is hoping to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.

He was substituted in the 2-1 defeat at Parc des Princes last month but Hiddink attributed that to his return from a groin injury.

"At that time when he was playing away in Paris he was in that period just coming back from a rather severe injury," added Hiddink.

"We could not ask him to be game fit at that moment. He had two or three actions that looked like Hazard.

"We are some weeks further into the league and game fitness. He can and must show what he is capable of, which is more than the away game."

The Blues are up against PSG for a third straight season. Chelsea won the quarter-final tie in 2014 on away goals, but were defeated at the last-16 stage in 2015 by the same method.

What Next for Mourinho Box Office

Chelsea have sacked manager Jose Mourinho seven months after he led them to the Premier League title.

The 52-year-old Portuguese had been in his second spell at the club, taking charge in June 2013.

Chelsea finished eight points clear last season and won the League Cup, but have lost nine of their 16 league games so far and are 16th in the table, one point above the relegation places.

Mourinho's final match was Monday's 2-1 defeat at leaders Leicester City.

Guus Hiddink, Brendan Rodgers, Diego Simeone and Juande Ramos have all been touted as possible successors. However it is likely that Hiddink will step in once again as interim manager given his relationship with Abramovich.

With Pep Guardiola to announce his plans next week - after Bayern Munich - the media will no doubt now view him as the natural successor at Stamford Bridge. Despite the fact that Manchester City appear to have been the favourites up to this moment.

Estimates this week suggested that club owner, Roman Abramovich, will be forced to pay Mourinho more than £40million if he was fired and perhaps the reason behind the slowness of the announcement ad the Chelsea management team of Bruce Buck, Marina Granovskaia, Eugene Tenenbaum and Michael Emenalo discussed the options at the club's Cobham base on Wednesday.

The huge severance and a strong relationship with worlds super agent, Jorge Mendes, on his side Mourinho will no doubt have some longer terms plans after some well earned time out of football. Something that would offer the limelight he craves in other media circles.

After establishing a number of records in the game at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid there appears little for Mourinho to achieve in football in the short term.

What is indisputable is that every move Jose makes has an alterior motive or objective. So his well heralded departure from Stamford Bridge ensures a financial windfall that leaves him with no need to ever work again. Allowing him enjoy the game from the stands or in the TV studios.

With Gary Neville gone to Spain Mourinho would be box office for Sky Sports, BT Sport or others. All willing to get out their cheque books no doubt as the news broke.

Jose Comments Damage - Filipe Luis

Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis claims Jose Mourinho's comments to the media can have a damaging effect on some players.

Mourinho, who has led the Blues to their worst start to a season for 37 years, has publicly criticised several members of his first-team squad this campaign, including Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic.

Luis joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid for £18m last summer, but failed to command a regular first-team place and was allowed to re-join the Spanish side in July.

Though the Brazil international feels Mourinho's approach is normal, he concedes his behaviour can have a detrimental influence on certain players.

"He has his way of talking to the press, especially when the team loses, which can sometimes be damaging to certain players. Some players benefit from criticism but for others, they don't," Luis said.

"Sometimes he's right and sometimes he's not. Sometimes people think what he says is absurd and sometimes they agree with him. It's the way he is and the way he works - I see it as normal."

Luis started just nine Premier League matches for Chelsea during the 2014/15 season, helping them to win the title as well as the Capital One Cup.

Although the 30-year-old considers his time at Stamford Bridge as a success, he believes Mourinho's decision not to play him in the opening match of the season at Burnley a crucial factor as to why he did not settle at the club.

"I didn't have the chance to play in the first match of the league season and the opportunity to play the first game is key for players at a new club. That made everything more difficult," he added.

"I consider my time with Chelsea a personal triumph," he added. "In one year, I won two titles - one being the Premier League. I have a trophy at home that not many people have and in possibly the most competitive league in the world."

Stoke Prove Chelsea Hazard

Getty Images
Eden Hazard missed the decisive penalty in the shoot-out as beleaguered Chelsea were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by 10-man Stoke.

The holders, who lost Diego Costa to injury in the first half, had come back from the brink to force extra-time, with Loic Remy's late equaliser cancelling out Jon Walters' fine 52nd-minute strike.

Stoke had Phil Bardsley sent off in second half injury-time but held on for the added 30 minutes to force penalties.

The first nine attempts were all scored but Jack Butland then pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Hazard and pile the pressure on Jose Mourinho and his struggling side.

The Premier League champions have now suffered four defeats in their last six games in all competitions and could be without Costa for their crunch clash against Liverpool this weekend after he was reportedly taken to hospital with a chest injury.

Without the Spaniard, the Blues pushed hard for a winner in extra-time at the Britannia but could not find a way past Butland, who made a sharp late stop to keep the game level.

Both sides named strong starting line-ups for the clash, with Hazard, Costa and Oscar in the XI for Chelsea and Ryan Shawcross making his first appearance of the season for Stoke.

The Blues started brightly and Butland was called into action early to keep out a near-post effort from Costa and a shot from Oscar.

Ramires should have given the visitors the lead when he rounded Butland after half an hour but failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy.

Stoke's best chance of the half came at the end as Walters turned in the box but saw his shot blocked by the outrushing Asmir Begovic.

The Potters forward would not be denied for long as, shortly after the interval, he was teed up on the edge of the box and sent a fantastic strike crashing in off the underside of bar.

Kurt Zouma and substitutes Kenedy and Bertrand Traore were unable to convert equaliser attempts, and Walters also missed a couple of chances to add to his effort.

Stoppage time then saw things dramatically turn in Chelsea's favour, with Remy rifling in Zouma's knock-down from a Willian corner and Bardsley being shown a second yellow card after a tackle on Kenedy.

The first half of the additional period saw Chelsea threaten through Hazard and a Traore header, while Marko Arnautovic fired a shot just wide of Begovic's post.

Willian went close in the second 15 minutes and Butland saved from Traore with his feet before touching the ball away as it skidded goalwards off Kenedy.

The England goalkeeper then proved the hero of the night as he made the decisive intervention in the shootout to send Stoke through to the quarter-finals.

Mourinho Returns to Football

José Mourinho has vowed to focus on football after taking exception to media reporting of two incidents on a London street.

The 52-year-old Chelsea manager is frustrated that phone camera footage of two teenagers following him through west London – something Chelsea described as overly intrusive – was widely reported this week.

“You don’t get from me good and funny headlines,” Mourinho said at his media conference for Saturday’s Premier League clash at West Ham. “I’m going to treat your bosses the same way they treat me. No respect, no respect. And I’m not speaking about football. Football I’m ready to accept any kind of criticism, even the stupid ones.

“Private life and stupid things that you bring to light, I don’t like it. So we go to a different level of professional relationship.”

A Chelsea spokesperson said: “We’ve noted the two recent stories concerning José being filmed on mobile phones. While José understands the laws pertaining to filming in public places, the two teenagers in question followed him from his home for 20 minutes and constantly interrupted a private phone call, which he and the club believes goes beyond the grounds of reasonable behaviour.

“José has always spoken warmly of the public reception he receives in London, but both José and the club consider these last two instances as overly intrusive.

“We also note the allegation of intimidation in those stories, which José strongly refutes and which his legal representatives will continue to monitor closely.”

The Premier League champions sit 12th in the table after nine games, having belatedly recorded a third winby beating Aston Villa last Saturday. That was followed by a goalless Champions League draw at Dynamo Kyiv but Mourinho is uncertain if Chelsea are now climbing from their lowest point of the season.

“I don’t know. I just know that the team was always together, the players were always together,” Mourinho added. “The players were man enough to assume responsibility and to say even publicly some of them that they were feeling responsibilities in their individual poor start.

“Statistics are very clear for us. As an example, we conceded six goals as a consequence of isolated individual mistakes.

“But the team was always together. We’ve got two important results, three points in the Premier League after two matches without a victory and against a direct rival for qualification in the Champions League [Dynamo] we got a point away and the chance in 15 days to play against them. The mood improves with results and people are happy.”

Eden Hazard, Chelsea’s leading performer last term, was dropped against Villa, but returned to the starting XI in Ukraine. Mourinho declined to say if the Belgium playmaker would start at Upton Park but merely spoke about his contribution in Kiev after demanding an improved work ethic.

“I don’t know [if Hazard will start],” said Mourinho. “He played the last match and played for 90 minutes and he was part of the compact team that kept that clean sheet. I’m happy with his contribution against Dynamo and that’s it.”

West Ham have made a fine start to sit fourth under Slaven Bilic, a manager Mourinho admires. “As a coach, I like [him] a lot,” Mourinho added. “Since the Croatian national team period to Besiktas and now to West Ham, I have a very good image, idea, about him. As a person, I don’t know him very well, but I have the feeling that we could be friends.”

Despite the troubled start to the season, Mourinho insists Chelsea are “not afraid to lose”. “Premier League is 38 matches, lots of points. You lose today, you try to win tomorrow,” he added. “At this moment in the Premier League we are not afraid to lose matches. We are going to play normal.”

Doctor Carneiro Leaves Chelsea

Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has decided to leave the club - six weeks after criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.

Carneiro had her role downgraded after Mourinho said his medical staff were "naive" for treating Eden Hazard during the 2-2 draw with Swansea on 8 August.

Chelsea asked Carneiro, 42, to return to work, but she has decided not to and is now considering her legal position.

The Football Association is looking into a complaint that Mourinho used abusive or sexist language towards her.

Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn went onto the pitch to treat midfielder Hazard in the closing stages of the draw with Swansea.

It meant the Blues were temporarily reduced to nine men, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois having been sent off, and Mourinho said the duo had been "impulsive and naive".

Carneiro lost her place on the bench and was no longer allowed to attend matches or training sessions.

Two days after the incident, she posted a message on Facebook thanking the public for their "overwhelming support".

Mourinho stood by his decision to remove her from her role, adding he had a "good relationship" with his medical staff.

Chelsea v Maccabi Tel Aviv - Preview

Chelsea will look to put their Premier League woes behind them as they kick off their Champions League campaign against Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho's side have picked up just four points from their opening five league games, losing three times, and the distraction of a European fixture on Wednesday night will be a welcome one.

After falling at the last-16 stage against Paris Saint-Germain last season, the Blues will be targeting an improved performance in the competition this time around.

Indeed, it is believed the exit to the French champions played a significant part in Mourinho altering his approach to enable his side to peak later in the season and therefore be better prepared to compete for the Champions League at the latter end of the season.

Meanwhile, the visitors, managed by former Blues midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic, who guided Watford to promotion last season, are making their first appearance in the group stages for 11 years after beating Basel on away goals in a play-off.

Radamel Falcao has a minor problem and will miss Wednesday's Group G encounter, although his absence is expected to be for one game only, while playmaker Oscar is available following a knee injury.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out for around three months following knee surgery, so Asmir Begovic will continue in goal, while defender Papy Djilobodji is not in the Champions League squad.

Mourinho may choose to freshen up his starting XI, however, due to his side's recent poor form and with a key Premier League clash with Arsenal in prospect on Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, are without Israel international full-back Eliazer Dasa, who is suspended for the clash at Stamford Bridge.

This is the first time these teams have played against each other.

Chelsea have played two matches against opposition from Israel before, failing to win either leg against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Cup 2nd Round in 01/02 (D1 L1).

The Blues have only lost once in their last 35 home Champions League matches in the Group Stage.

Diego Costa didn't score a single goal in seven Champions League appearances last season with Chelsea after netting eight goals in nine games with Atletico Madrid in the previous campaign.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are making their second appearance in the Champions League group stages - the first one came in the 2004/05 campaign when they finished bottom of their group with one win (D1 L4).

No Israeli club has ever made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They've won only four of their 24 games in the group stages of the competition, with all four of these wins coming at home.
