Strachan Uncertain About Future

Getty Images
An "emotional" Gordon Strachan refused to be drawn on whether he wishes to remain as Scotland manager for the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Instead, he spoke of a "special night" when around 12,000 Scotland fans attended the 6-0 win over Gibraltar in Faro in their last Euro 2016 qualifier.

"I am so proud to be the Scotland manager. It's a great job," he said.

"There are disappointments along the way, that's for sure, but it has been a fantastic experience."

Scotland finished fourth in Group D, three points behind the Republic of Ireland, who enter a play-off over two legs for a place in France.

Under 58-year-old Strachan, Scotland have won 12 matches, lost eight and drawn five.

Now he must decide if he wishes to continue in the post he took up since January 2013 for the World Cup qualifying campaign against England, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta.

Thousands of Scotland fans journeyed to the Algarve for the match, despite Scotland's 2-2 draw with Poland on Thursday making the match, in effect, meaningless.

"They could have turned up because they had already booked and been negative but from the start [it was] their positivity," said an appreciative manager.

"The fans, if they see a group of players who try their best, they will support them. That has never been more clear than this evening.

"We've seen a special night in terms of the bond between fans and players. The players are buzzing because of the support they got."

Pressed to reveal his intentions, Strachan added that there would be a "debrief" and that he would speak to the Scottish Football Association and his family to discuss his future.

"The experience has been far, far better than I thought it could ever be," he said.

"It's quite an emotional night. I'm still enjoying the players' performance, I'm still enjoying the fans' performance. I'm going to enjoy that for a bit before I start thinking about me.

"I think it is wrong to be talking about me right after a game.

"I'm working with a great bunch of players and great staff and it makes my job easy."

Republic of Ireland v Germany - Preview

Seamus Coleman has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifier against Germany with injury.

Manager Martin O'Neill confirmed on Wednesday that the Everton defender has a hamstring injury which will keep him out of Thursday's tie in Dublin.

However he is hopeful Coleman, who has not trained all week, could be available for the final Group D clash against Poland on Sunday in Warsaw.

Fears over Wes Hoolahan's fitness have eased after he trained on Wednesday.

The Norwich midfielder has a heel problem but is expected to start with midfielders Glenn Whelan and James McClean suspended.

Coleman has missed recent games for Everton with the hamstring injury which also kept him out of the Republic's win over Gibraltar last month.

Cyrus Christie could again deputise for Coleman in the crucial Group D clash.

The Derby County player scored his first international goal in the 4-0 qualifier win over Gibraltar, although Coleman was back in the side that beat Georgia.

Defender Marc Wilson is a major doubt having stayed at his club Stoke City for treatment on a calf injury.

Martin O'Neill's side face a tough double-header, but victory in just one of the matches would guarantee at least a third-place finish and a play-off spot.

Two draws would not be enough for the Republic if Scotland, who trail them by four points, win their final games against the Poles and Gibraltar.

Midfielder Wes Hoolahan should feature against Germany after recovering from a heel injury

At Tuesday's training, assistant manager Roy Keane said he expected the Republic's record goalscorer Robbie Keane to be ready to face Germany if selected days after the birth of his second son.

The 35-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy striker was not due to arrive in Dublin until Tuesday evening after his wife Claudine gave birth on the other side of the Atlantic.

Asked whether his former team-mate would be available for the showdown with group leaders Germany, Keane said: "Yes, why wouldn't he be?

"He didn't have the baby. Unless he's breast-feeding he should be all right."

The younger Keane was part of the team that secured a famous 1-1 draw with the world champions courtesy of John O'Shea's injury-time strike in Gelsenkirchen in October last year.

That result came amid an uncharacteristically slow start to the campaign by Joachim Low's men, who have since put together a run of five successive qualifier victories.

Assistant boss Keane said the world champions would be a different proposition this time around, but he was confident Ireland had improved too.

He said: "I think we are a stronger team. Like you would expect with any campaign, teams improve.

"Germany were a bit sluggish at the start, but with all the qualities they have it was only a matter of time before they started winning matches and topped the group.

"But we will be ready

Keane Laughs from Roy

Roy Keane is expecting the Republic of Ireland’s record goalscorer, Robbie Keane, to be ready to face Germany on Thursday despite the recent arrival of his second son. The 35-year-old LA Galaxy striker was not due to arrive in Dublin until Tuesday evening after his wife, Claudine, gave birth in America.

Asked if his former team-mate would be available for the critical match against the Group D leaders at the Aviva Stadium, Ireland’s assistant manager said: “Yes, why wouldn’t he be? He didn’t have the baby. Unless he’s breastfeeding he should be all right.”

The striker was part of the team that secured a famous 1-1 draw with the world champions courtesy of John O’Shea’s injury-time strike in Gelsenkirchen in October last year, and a repeat at the Aviva could have a major say in whether or not they make it to the finals in France next summer.

That result came amid an uncharacteristically slow start to the campaign by Joachim Löw’s men, who have since put together a run of five successive qualifier victories. However, while the former Manchester United captain Keane admits they will be a different proposition this time around, he is confident Ireland have improved too.

He said: “I think we are a stronger team. Like you’d expect with any campaign, teams improve. We were still new to the job at the time and, yes, I think we are a better team.

“But certainly Germany’s form, as you would have expected – they were a bit sluggish at the start, but with all the qualities they have it was only a matter of time before they started winning matches and topped the group, no doubt. But we will be ready.”

Ireland go into an intensely difficult pair of games – they face second-placed Poland in Warsaw on Sunday evening in their final match – knowing victory in just one of those matches will guarantee at least a third-place finish and a play-off spot. However, they are equally aware that should Scotland, who trail them by four points, beat both the Poles and Gibraltar, even creditable draws against the Germans and in Warsaw would mean they miss out.

O’Neill’s number two said: “I’ve said it before, this is what the players and this is what we are in the game for. It’s a big game, we are playing quality opposition. This is what it’s all about.”

The Republic have a series of selection headaches with the midfielders Glenn Whelan and James McClean suspended and the full-back Séamus Coleman, the central defender Marc Wilson and the playmaker Wes Hoolahan carrying knocks.

Cyrus Christie, who could yet deputise for the hamstring victim Coleman, did train at Abbotstown on Tuesday morning but the management team will keep their collective fingers crossed as they await news on their walking wounded.

The former Aston Villa assistant Keane adopted a similar stance to that of O’Neill over Jack Grealish’s decision to opt to represent England rather than Ireland. He had tried to persuade the 20-year-old to continue to play for the nation he has represented at age group levels up to under-21 during their time together in the Midlands but ultimately accepted his decision to choose the country of his birth.

O’Neill had earlier launched a stern defence of his handling of the situation, insisting he had not prostituted himself in a bid to land the youngster, and asked if everything had been done that could be done, Keane said: “Yes, absolutely. What more can you do?

“I think the manager did everything he could. Jack was already playing for Ireland and you were hoping that he’d continue. That’s life, you move on.”

Keane Wants No-Nonesense Boss

Getty Images
Robbie Keane says the Republic of Ireland need a no-nonsense manager to help revive the country's international football fortunes.

The FAI are not rushing into appointing a successor to Giovanni Trapattoni but Martin O'Neill, Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane are being linked with the job.

"I want someone who doesn't mess around," said the Republic captain.

"Someone who is very, very proud to be a manager and be proud of what we are trying to achieve in Ireland."

The LA Galaxy striker, who is in line to win his 130th senior cap againstKazakhstan in Tuesday's final World Cup qualifier, played under McCarthy and alongside Keane for his country and knows their merits well.

The Republic captain is also aware of what O'Neill would bring to the party and he has said that he would have no qualms over any of the trio if they were appointed.

"The names I have heard being mentioned, if any of them took over, I think everybody would be fairly happy.

"Mick is a great guy, a fantastic guy. Everything we have referenced, he comes into that mould. If it was Mick, if it was Martin O'Neill, Roy Keane, I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, to be honest with you."

Asked if the next manager should be Irish, Keane replied: "As long as it's the right man, it doesn't matter.

"But of course, I think everybody at this stage now probably would want an Irish manager.

"I think it's probably clear and obvious to see that. It's looking likely that it probably will be, it seems that way, anyway - that's not me with inside information."

Whoever Trapattoni's replacement proves to be, Keane, 33, says he will be available for selection.

"I will continue to play as long as I feel healthy," added Keane, who has a national record 60 Republic goals to his name.

The Republic captain will not be a candidate for the manager's job but it is a role that he could see himself undertaking in the future.

"But I'm sure that wouldn't be for a long, long time - if I got the opportunity."

Keane Galaxy Reach MLS Cup Final

Robbie Keane stood next to the conference title trophy, politely smiled for the picture and let the confetti rain down.

Just as quick, Keane, David Beckham and the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy were rushing off the stage at midfield and ready to get out of Seattle, thankful there is still one more game in their surprising season.

"Certainly they were the better team tonight there's no question," Keane said. "At the end of the day we're in the final, that's all that matter."

Eddie Johnson and Zach Scott scored to give Seattle a 2-0 lead, but Keane converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute on Sunday night that clinched the Los Angeles Galaxy's 4-2 aggregate victory over the Sounders in the Western Conference finals and a spot in the MLS Cup final for the second straight year.

Frantic and desperate, Seattle rallied from a 3-0 deficit after getting overwhelmed in the first leg of the Western Conference finals last week.

And they were on the verge of completing the huge comeback after Johnson's goal just 12 minutes in, and Scott's header in the 58th minute pulled Seattle within one in the aggregate count.

Just when Los Angeles needed something, anything to stem the wave of momentum the Sounders were on trying to find a tying goal, Keane expertly controlled the ball along the end line and was able to send a cross that caught Seattle defender Adam Johansson's hand.

There was no hesitation from referee Mark Geiger, who was the subject of complaints all night from both sides, and he called a handball in the penalty box. Keane then converted his fifth goal of the playoffs and all but ended Seattle's chances at a rally.

A statement from Geiger after the match said he made the call because Johansson had extended his arms outside his body and making himself bigger by taking space.

"At that point it took the air out of Seattle and its fans," Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said. "It was an important goal."

After fighting back from an awful start to finish fourth in the Western Conference, the Galaxy's reward is a rematch with Houston in the MLS Cup final on Dec. 1, a game Los Angeles will host.

It'll pit the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds from each conference in the title match and be the Galaxy's third appearance in the final in the past four seasons.

"There were many times (this year) we would have been ecstatic just to get to the playoffs," said Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan, who did not play with a hamstring strain. "But you've got to give our guys a lot of credit from where we were the beginning of June to where we are now it's pretty impressive."

For the second straight year, Seattle's season ended because it was unable to make up a three-goal deficit in the second leg at home. The Sounders' frustration boiled over after the final whistle when Johnson and Osvaldo Alonso both confronted Geiger at midfield while the Galaxy celebrated.

"Kind of put a stab in our hearts at that point because we worked so hard and felt like we were back in the game," Johnson said of Keane's goal. "It was painful today. Credit to them, good team, got the job done in first game. When put yourself in difficult situation against defending champions, it's tough to get back."

Even though Los Angeles knew Seattle would attack from the start, the Galaxy were overwhelmed the first 15 minutes. In the 11th minute, Johnson appeared to get Seattle the lead off a quick pass by Christian Tiffert, but was disallowed as Johnson was offside. Television replays showed Johnson was onside when the pass was played and the goal should have counted, but it became a moot point moments later.

Scott won a free ball in midfield and sent it ahead to Johnson, who got position on Omar Gonzalez and scored with a left-footed blast giving Seattle a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

Seattle continued to press for chances, but was unable to draw any closer by halftime. Los Angeles nearly got a decisive break just before halftime when Mike Magee's shot was blocked in the penalty box and appeared to hit the arm of Seattle's Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, but Geiger immediate waived off any handball call.

Scott then made the possibility of Seattle's rally realistic when he scored on a diving header that Tiffert smartly played toward the near post. It was just the eighth goal for Seattle in MLS play off set pieces all season and gave Seattle more than 30 minutes to try and equalise.

"We felt we were in pretty good shape ... that we could get the third," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said.

But the handball ended all those hopes and re-established a two-goal cushion and silenced a crowd of 44,575, the largest for a non-final in MLS playoff history and the sixth largest for any MLS playoff game. Keane had two goals and an assist in the first leg.

"There is no way you can try and get a penalty in that situation," Keane said. "I was just trying to get the ball across and the referee gave the penalty. Lucky for us."

Keane Not Burdened by Expectation

Robbie Keane says he is happy to shoulder the burden of responsibility and will not be weighed down by expectation as the Republic of Ireland prepare for Euro 2012.

The 31-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy striker will wear the captain's armband in Poland and Ukraine, while he will also be the man expected to carry the bulk of his side's goal threat after extending his record tally for the nation to 53 in qualification.

He is ready for the challenge of taking on a key role both as a player and a leader, but insists everyone in the squad must rise to the occasion.

"Of course there's always responsibility on you as captain," he said.

"Especially when you are away for so long, there are going to be times where a few of the lads are going to be down, there are going to be a few little niggles in training with players, but that's normal stuff when you are away and you are stuck in a hotel for a long, long time.

"But it's important for me as captain and the senior players, as soon as any sort of negativity is around the camp, it's important that us as senior players nip it in the bud straight away.

"As captain, you can't carry the whole team, so first and foremost, you have to make sure that as a player, you are doing the best you can to help the team, so I will certainly be doing that."

There will be a heightened level of expectation on Ireland as a result of the strides they have made under Giovanni Trapattoni in the last four years, despite the fact that they have been drawn in a tough group which also includes Spain, Italy and Croatia.

But that too is not something which unduly concerns Keane.

He said: "That comes with how well we have done as a team. If you have seen the performances since the manager took over the reins, the level has increased a hell of a lot.

"That's full credit to the players and the backroom staff. Expectations come when you are doing well as a team, so that's the reason for that."

Galaxy Man Keane Becomes Villain

Robbie Keane’s short-term loan move to Aston Villa is on the verge of being completed after the Republic of Ireland captain trained with his prospective new teammates in Birmingham this morning.

The LA Galaxy striker is expected to join on a two-month loan deal during the MLS off-season.

Villa released footage of the 31-year-old training on their official website with the club due to dot the I’s and cross the T’s regarding the paperwork later today. Villa boss Alex McLeish revealed after the club’s FA Cup third-round victory over Bristol Rovers on Saturday he expected to wrap up the signing of the former Tottenham man early this week.

If the paperwork is completed in time Keane could make his debut against Everton on Saturday, where he will come up against his Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan, who is on loan at Goodison Park.

“You are now talking about a guy who is at his peak,” McLeish said of the Dubliner at the weekend. “At 19 there is a lot you don’t know, but at 31 you certainly know a lot more. He can make up for it if he is not as quick as he was at 19 because he has got the quickness in the head.

“We got a report from Tottenham (where Keane had been keeping up his fitness) that he looks in much better condition than he did this time last year when he went to West Ham.That’s what we are hearing, he’s in tip-top shape.

“The fact that the Irish boys have the Euro 2012 tournament to look forward to means Robbie wants to be at his peak. We’ve been speaking ‘Is that the right way to go forward?’ and he feels ‘Yes’, he wants to keep right on top of his sharpness, so if he has that kind of motivation it can only be good for us.

“It will give everybody a lift, the team, the staff, the whole lot, more importantly for the fans. Any fan identifies with players who give absolutely everything for the team, they are always turned on by that, they are motivated by people running through brick walls for the club and Robbie is that type of player.”

Keane for Club and Country

Aston Villa are believed to be interested in signing Los Angeles Galaxy striker Robbie Keane on a two-month loan deal.

But in the immediate future, Keane will train with his former club Spurs until 21 January.

Villa boss Alex McLeish is a long-time fan of the 31-year-old Republic of Ireland captain.

Last season, when he was Birmingham manager, McLeish came close to signing Keane in a £6m deal from Spurs.

The two clubs agreed a fee but personal terms proved a stumbling block and Keane joined West Ham on loan before making the switch to the United States last summer.

Terms have yet to be finalised but if Keane joined Villa, he would link up with Ireland team-mates Shay Given and Richard Dunne.

It is believed Keane wants to stay sharp for the Euro 2012 finals by continuing to play before the Major Soccer League season begins in March.

West Coast Galaxy for Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane is the latest international star to appear with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The MLS-leading Galaxy agreed to terms with the Irish national team captain on Monday, adding another big name alongside David Beckham for the playoff run.

"I have already discussed football with (Galaxy coach) Bruce Arena, and I know exactly what he wants from me," Keane said. "I am fit, fresh and ready to go. I've come here to score goals and help this team achieve their goals. This is a massive opportunity for me in my career. I aim to grab it with both hands and hopefully help give the Galaxy fans what they want."

Keane is moving from Tottenham Hotspur, where the 31-year-old striker has fallen behind Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe after scoring just one goal in 10 matches last season. Keane initially hoped to stay in the Premier League during its transfer window, but became interested in the Galaxy after training with Beckham at Tottenham earlier this year.

"I have always wanted to come and play in MLS, so it's the perfect combination for me and a dream come true," said Keane, the 10th-leading goal-scorer in Premier League history with 123 goals. "When David Beckham came and trained at Spurs recently, he couldn't speak highly enough about the Galaxy, their fans and the league in general, so I can't wait to get over and get started."

Although Keane has struggled with Tottenham, he has been outstanding for the Irish national team, scoring a record 51 goals in his career -- including five goals in six recent matches during group qualifying play for Euro 2012. He played for Ireland against Croatia last Wednesday, and the Irish have key qualifying matches against Slovakia and Russia in the next few weeks.

Arena said the "best-case" scenario would have Keane in camp for Saturday's game at HDC against San Jose. "That's the best case," Arena said. "And that's really cutting it close."

The Galaxy lead the MLS standings with 48 points on the strength of 11 goals from Landon Donovan -- the league's second-leading goal-scorer behind Thierry Henry -- and a resurgent season from Beckham, who's second in the league with 10 assists in the final year of his MLS contract.

"Robbie Keane will be a great addition to our club," said Arena, also the Galaxy's general manager. "I have followed his career and have always respected his ability as a competitor and a goal-scorer. I believe that he brings qualities in and around the penalty area that we have been lacking. Hopefully he will be another piece of the puzzle in our quest for the Supporters' Shield and an MLS Cup championship, as well as to advance to the next round of the CONCACAF Champions League."

The team will provide no details on the Keane's contract, but reports in England and in the U.S. have the Irish national team captain with a two-year deal at about $9 million -- that would make him the league's third-highest-paid player, after Beckham and Henry -- after L.A. paid a transfer fee of $3 million to Tottenham.

The Galaxy must make a roster move when Keane receives his visa, since Los Angeles already has three "designated players" who can be paid above the MLS salary cap: Beckham, Donovan and Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel.

Beckham and Donovan are crucial to the Galaxy's success, which means Angel almost certainly will be moved when Keane gets his visa. Although Angel was the MLS' leading scorer over the previous four seasons, he has just three goals and one assist in 22 games for Los Angeles.

Angel is thought to be headed across the hallway at Home Depot Center to Chivas USA, which shares a stadium with the Galaxy in Carson, Calif., and is fighting to stay in the playoff race.

"We haven't made any other player acquisitions or departures at this point," Arena said. "We'll have to do something, yes. There's always the possibility we'll make more moves than just this one.

"When we have that solved, we'll be the first to let you know."

Starting his professional career at 17, Keane played for three English clubs and Inter Milan before joining Tottenham in August 2002.

He moved to Liverpool in 2008, but returned to Tottenham in early 2009 before spending parts of the past two seasons on loan to Celtic of the Scottish Premier League and West Ham.
