Brady Expected for Whole Pats Season

Tom Brady is slated to miss four games of the new season for his part in the Deflategate scandal, but Rob Gronkowski, his Patriots team-mate, is confident Brady’s suspension will be wiped out by the time September rolls around.

Brady was originally suspended for four games in 2015, but he and the NFL players’ union successfully appealed the verdict, and Brady was allowed to play the entire season. The suspension was reinstated late last month, but Gronkowski feels Brady will be available for the whole season.

“I was actually surprised. It was a surprise to everyone,” Gronkowski said.

“I thought it was totally done and it was crazy to see it happen again. It’s kind of getting stupid to the point where it’s at now. Why it’s still going on now … but I think he’s going to play 16 games again. That’s the way it’s been going on, that’s the way it’s worked, so hopefully that’s true.”

Brady appealed the reinstatement of the suspension, and was recently granted an extension on his request for a rehearing. Brady and the players’ union now have until 23 May to file the request.

If Brady misses those four games, Jimmy Garoppolo would probably step in take the starter’s job. The Patriots also selected a quarterback in the third round of this year’s draft, North Carolina State’s Jacoby Brissett.

“No matter who’s at quarterback,” Gronkowski said, “you’ve got to be prepared and be ready to help out the team.”

Panthers Davis to Play with Pain

Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis is prepared to play through the pain barrier at Super Bowl 50 after having surgery on a broken arm only nine days ago.

Davis has received the green light from the NFC champions' medical team to face the Denver Broncos this Sunday in the biggest game of his 11-year NFL career.

He is no stranger to overcoming serious setbacks following three torn anterior cruciate ligament injuries, but there has been little time for him to overcome his latest problem before the season finale at Levi's Stadium.

Davis broke his right arm in the 49-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game and knows he is likely to be in discomfort on Sunday having had a plate and screws inserted.

"You don't sit around and think about it," he said. "Our doctors came up with a game-plan and they feel confident that I can go out and play at a high level.

"With them having confidence, that pushes my confidence level up. I know how I feel right now.

"I understand that on game day it's really going to boil down to how much pain that I can actually play through. There are not going to be any limitations, I can go out there and actually play.

"But I just had surgery a little bit over a week ago, it's going to hurt but you play the game with pain all the time.

Asked about his pain threshold, he added: "It's definitely a lot higher than you would imagine and given that this is the Super Bowl, you figure out a way to play through things. That's something I'm going to be doing.

"When it comes down to actually playing with limitations and playing through pain - it's two different things. Playing with pain is something that you can deal with and that's what I'm going to be doing, I'll deal with it."

Manning Surpasses Elway Record

Getty Images
Peyton Manning — the 39-year-old quarterback who was supposed to be on his way to a retirement party — will be playing in the Super Bowl two weeks from now.

Manning engineered a 20-18 victory over the Patriots — not settled until Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby picked off Brady’s pass on a two-point attempt that would have tied it with 12 seconds left.

The New England Patriots had to go for two after Brady hit Rob Gronkowski in the back of the end zone because Stephen Gostkowski missed his first extra point in 524 tries in the first quarter. Aqib Talib stepped in front of Brady’s pass and deflected it skyward.

Roby, who forced the game-changing fumble in last week’s victory over Pittsburgh, made the pick. The Broncos (14-4) recovered the onside kick and the celebration began. Manning is now 6-11 in his vaunted series against Brady, but 3-1 when it has counted the most — with the AFC title on the line.

“Well, it’s been a special rivalry over the course of my career against the Patriots, the entire organization,” Manning said.

“To play four times in the AFC championship with so much on the line, those games have been very special.”

Manning surpassed his boss, John Elway, as the oldest quarterback to take his team to the Super Bowl. The Broncos will play Arizona or Carolina, who met later in the NFC title game.

Whether it’s been Manning lining up under centre, or Brock Osweiler, who took snaps while Manning was injured for six weeks toward the end of the season, the Broncos have depended on a defense that gave up the fewest yards this season and came up with game-saving plays time and again.

Von Miller finished with two-and-a-half sacks and an interception. The Broncos harassed Brady all day. He finished 27 for 56 for 310 yards. After being shut out twice inside the Denver 20 late in the fourth quarter, Brady lobbed a 40-yard pass to a double-covered Gronkowski to keep a desperation drive going on fourth-and-10.

Then, on fourth-and-goal from the four with 12 seconds left, Brady found Gronkowski — again double-covered — in the back corner of the end zone. The tight end stepped in front of Chris Harris Jr for the catch, and the game came down to one play.

Denver tight end Owen Daniels was the hero in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots, catching two Peyton Manning passes for touchdowns in the first half as the Broncos booked their Super Bowl place

The Broncos defense made it once again, and the franchise are now headed to their eighth Super Bowl. This marks No4 for Manning, who could become the first quarterback to lead two different franchises to titles.

“The one thing we’ve done all year long is we just grind as a football team,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “Our fans are great to play for. Defensively, we played our tails off all year long and we found a way to win another tough one.”

Was it vintage Manning? Not quite. Vintage Manning has never been known for taking off when the field is clear, the way he did with 9:49 left in the third quarter and nothing but air between him and the first-down marker on the Patriots sideline.

The 17-for-32 performance certainly won’t go in his top half, nor will Owen Daniels go down as one of his top 50 all-time favourite receivers. But 17 completions was enough, and it was Daniels, the tight end who has played his whole career somewhere with Kubiak, who caught both of Manning’s touchdown passes.

Faced with the new title of game manager, Manning made the best playoff scramble by a Broncos quarterback since Elway helicoptered his way to a first down in the Super Bowl 18 years back to help the Broncos finally break through.

More fresh in the minds of Broncos fans was Manning’s decision to pull up and throw in the playoff game against the Colts last season when he had as much or more open space in front of him as he did Sunday.

Some thought his career might be over after that one. But there’s at least one more game in his future — 7 February in Santa Clara, California against the Carolina Panthers.

Patriots Fleming in Road Heroism

Getty Images
New England Patriots linebacker Darius Fleming said he didn’t hesitate when he saw a woman trapped in a smoking car: he kicked out the window, enabling her to escape. But Fleming says he cut his right leg in the process, and he soon began to worry about how coach Bill Belichick would react.

“The first concern was, like, ‘Man, Bill’s going to be pissed about my leg,’” Fleming said in the Patriots locker room on Wednesday after word of his rescue filtered out. “I explained the story to him and he said, ‘That was pretty cool. I’m glad you were able to help her.’”

Fleming, 26, said he was on his way home from practise on Thursday when a truck up ahead slowed down to turn, causing a three-car collision behind it. The former Notre Dame and San Francisco 49er linebacker was behind the third car and pulled over to see if he could help. What he saw was a woman unable to open her doors or windows as her car began to fill with smoke.

“I saw her panic on her face,” Fleming told reporters.

The 6ft 2in, 250lbs Fleming said he needed a few kicks to break the passenger side window, cutting his right leg on the glass as he pulled it back out of the car. The woman climbed out safely.

“My adrenaline was going up and I wasn’t thinking much about it. I was just thinking about whether she was safe,” Fleming said. “Once I got her out of the car, she said ‘Thank you,’ I said ‘You’re welcome,’ and I saw my leg and I got out of there.”

Local police appeared to corroborate Fleming’s version of events on Wednesday. “[The woman involved in the incident] said that ... her vehicle lost power and she could not get out,” said Walpole police in a statement. “At that time a male who she believed to be a Patriot approached the passenger side and indicated to her that he would kick in the passenger side window which he did. She then crawled over to the passenger side and the unknown male assisted her in climbing out of the window.”

Police said there had been no fire at the accident but a released airbag may have given the impression of smoke. “There was no fire involved in this crash however there was air bag deployment, which to the untrained eye can appear as if the vehicle is enveloped in smoke.”

Fleming, a fifth-round draft pick in 2012, needed 22 stitches to close the gash. He played with the injury on Saturday in New England’s 27-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, filling in when starters Jamie Collins and Jerod Mayo were injured. “I was more worried about just getting out there and playing. I’m glad it didn’t affect my play much,” Fleming said. “The worst thing that could happen is that I would tear them [stitches] open and get restitched. It wasn’t like it was a life-threatening injury or anything like that.”

Patriots safety Devin McCourty said on Wednesday that Fleming tried to keep it quiet. “But once the guys on the team got a hold of it, we forced him to give a speech and everything,” McCourty said, calling it “the hero’s speech.”

Roadside heroism is becoming a bit of a playoff tradition for the Patriots. Last year, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork pulled a woman from a car that had flipped on its side after New England won the AFC championship game.

“We’ve got great guys around here, no matter the time — playoffs, regular season — we’re always out in the community trying to save people,” McCourty said with a laugh. Like Wilfork before him, Fleming said he didn’t think he did anything special.

“It represents his character,” linebacker Rob Ninkovich said. “He’s a great person. ... It’s definitely somebody that you want in a situation like that, to kick in windows and taking stitches.”

Panthers Overcome Seahawks

The Panthers, who led 31-0 at half-time, beat the Seahawks 31-24 as they remain on course to win the Super Bowl for the first time.

They will meet the Arizona Cardinals after their 26-20 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The Denver Broncos will host defending champions the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

Denver were trailing 13-12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 10 minutes to go before CJ Anderson scored the only touchdown to help the Broncos win 23-16.

The Patriots, who are aiming to make a record ninth Super Bowl, ended the Kansas City Chiefs' 11-game winning run with a 27-20 success.

Carolina won 15 of their 16 matches during the regular season and looked on their way to an easy victory against Seattle. Two touchdowns from Jonathan Stewart and one apiece from Luke Kuechly and Greg Olsen helped Carolina into a 31-point lead.

However, two touchdowns from Jermaine Kearse and one from Tyler Lockett brought Seattle within seven points, but Carolina held on.

Tom Brady Deflates Chiefs Chances

Getty Images

Tom Brady took off for the end zone and dived for the pylon, taking a helmet in the back as his body sailed over the goal line.

The ball stayed out, but it didn’t matter. The reigning Super Bowl MVP carried it in for a score on the next play, reaching over the line to convert in a way Kansas City couldn't Saturday.

Brady threw for two touchdowns to Rob Gronkowski and sneaked for another, and the defending Super Bowl champions reached their fifth straight AFC title game with a 27-20 victory over the Chiefs.

New England (13-4) will meet the winner of Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos for a spot in Super Bowl 50. The Patriots are trying to become the first team to win back-to-back NFL titles since they did it in 2003-04.

After spending the last two weeks recovering from knee and back injuries, Gronkowski caught seven passes for 83 yards, including touchdowns from 8 and 16 yards out. Gronkowski also recovered an onside kick after Kansas City cut the deficit to 27-20 with just over one minute left.

Julian Edelman returned from a broken foot to catch 10 passes for 100 yards for New England.

Alex Smith completed 29 of 50 passes for 246 yards and one touchdown for Kansas City (12-6). The Chiefs had won 11 consecutive games, including a 30-0 victory over Houston in the wild-card round last week for their first playoff victory since 1993.

Brady led New England to a score on the opening drive, throwing 11 straight passes and completing eight the last an 8-yard score to Gronkowski. The Chiefs then made it to the Patriots 16, but settled for a field goal.

After trading punts twice, the Patriots started on their when punt returner Danny Amendola was flagged for a helmet-first hit to coverage man Jamell Fleming. The drive was in danger of stalling at the Kansas City 35 when Chiefs linebacker Dezman Moses hit Brady late and was called for roughing the passer.

The stadium erupted in cheers of “Brady!” just as it had four months ago when the four-time Super Bowl champion returned from his looming Deflategate suspension to play in the season opener.

Four plays later, unable to find an open receiver, Brady sprinted sort of for the corner of the end zone. The Chiefs managed to keep him out, but only for one more play. On the next snap, Brady leaned forward and reached into the end zone to make it 14-3.

Patriots defensive lineman Chandler Jones forced Knile Davis’ fumble on the Chiefs’ first possession of the second half, then Brady added another touchdown pass to Gronkowski to make it 21-6.

Smith had the Chiefs into New England territory on their first six possessions, but they managed just six points before he hit Albert Wilson on a 10-yard pass that made it 21-13.

NFL Has Gone Soft - Donald Trump

Donald Trump believes he has found the perfect encapsulation of the decline of America: the NFL’s efforts to stop head-on collisions in football.

Speaking at a rally in Reno, Nevada, he lamented a game that has “gone soft”, while appearing to reference the penalties that cost the Cincinnati Bengals their playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“So I’m watching a game yesterday,” said Trump. “What used to be considered a great tackle, a violent head-on [tackle], a violent – if that was done by Dick Butkus, they’d say he’s the greatest player. If that were done by Lawrence Taylor – it was done by Lawrence Taylor and Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke, right? Ray Nitschke — you used to see these tackles and it was incredible to watch, right?

“Now they tackle. ‘Oh, head-on-head collision, 15 yards.’ The whole game is all screwed up ... Football has become soft. Football has become soft. Now, I’ll be criticized for that. They’ll say, ‘Oh, isn’t that terrible.’ But football has become soft like our country has become soft.

Despite wide acknowledgement that the league needs to cut down on head injuries and concussions, Trump said that more protection for players will harm the NFL. “It’s become weak and you know what? It’s going to affect the NFL,” said Trump. “I don’t even watch it as much anymore. It’s going to affect the NFL. I don’t watch it. The referees, they want to all throw flags so their wives see them at home. ‘Oh, there’s my husband.’ It’s true. ‘He just broke up - he just gave a 15-yard penalty on one of the most beautiful tackles made this year.’ Right?”

Trump was quick to give his approval for one figure in the NFL though: his friend the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

“It’s boring - although I love Tom Brady,” said Trump. “I gotta tell you. I do love Tom. He’s a great guy. But it’s different. But it’s become soft and our country has become soft.”

Patriots Gaffe Gives Jets Hope

Getty Images
The New England Patriots lost 26-20 to the New York Jets on Sunday after bizarrely opting to kick at the start of overtime.

The Patriots won the coin toss but Matthew Slater handed the ball to the Jets, and the decision was punished by Eric Decker's six-yard touchdown catch.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick accepted responsibility after the game for choosing to kick. "I thought it was the best thing to do," he said.

The result means the Jets will secure a wildcard play-off place if they beat Buffalo next week. The Patriots had already secured a first-round bye.

After regulation time ended with the teams locked at 20-20, the Jets took full advantage of the Patriots' shock generosity by moving into scoring position through a career-long 48-yard reception by Quincy Enunwa and a 20-yard pass to Brandon Marshall.

Quarter-back Ryan Fitzpatrick then hit Decker on a fade behind Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler to secure a fifth consecutive win.

Marshall had two touchdown catches and also became the first NFL player with 100 receptions in six seasons, while Fitzpatrick tied a franchise record with his 29th touchdown throw this season.

The Patriots forced overtime when Tom Brady hit James White for a nine-yard score with 1min 55sec remaining in the fourth quarter.
