Rory Rollercoaster as Spieth Slips

McIlroy
McIlroy at Augusta, Round 2
Rory McIlroy believes the Masters "owes" him a green jacket to complete the career grand slam after setting up a mouthwatering battle with defending champion Jordan Spieth.

McIlroy could have won his first major title at Augusta National when he took a four-shot lead into the final round in 2011, only to collapse to a closing 80 to finish 10 shots behind the winner Charl Schwartzel.

The 26-year-old bounced back to win the US Open two months later and the US PGA title in 2012, meaning victory in the Open at Hoylake in 2014 left him needing victory in the Masters to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in having won all four majors.

"I sort of feel that Augusta owes me something and I have come with that attitude," McIlroy said after a second round of 71 in swirling winds left him just a shot behind Spieth, who struggled to a 74. "I have come here to get something that I should have had a long time ago.

"You need to be so focused and in control of your emotions here. It's about not getting fazed and mentally I have been good the last couple of days. I need to keep that going for the next two days."

McIlroy was eight shots behind Spieth after 11 holes as the world number two threatened to turn the tournament into a procession for the second year running in his quest to join Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods in making a successful title defence.

However, The Masters ChampionsSpieth then four-putted the fifth and became noticeably annoyed at being timed for slow play around Amen Corner on his way to his worst score in 10 rounds as a professional.

McIlroy took full advantage with birdies on the 13th, 15th and 16th to put himself in a great position, but admits he needs to ignore who he is playing with and the significance of what he is trying to achieve.

"Look, I know it's a very big weekend for me. I know that," he said. "But when I'm out there on the golf course, I just have to be completely 100 per cent focused on the task at hand, and if I can do that and stay in the moment and be completely focused over every golf shot I hit from now until Sunday night, then hopefully everything will work out the way I want it to."

Despite his rollercoaster round, Spieth still became the first player in Masters history to hold the outright lead for six rounds in succession, but joked he would rather play with someone "less threatening" than McIlroy.

"We seem to both be on our games right now and focusing on this week. With a lot of players behind us there is potential for someone to shoot a few under tomorrow and move into the lead from outside the top 25.

"I don think either one of us will focus on each other, we'll focus on the course. Sure it's exciting to play with Rory, but we'll not think much more of it."

The top 32 players are separated by just six shots.

Shane Lowry remains just four off the lead despite singing for a 76.

US Amateur champion Bryson DeChambeau was also on level par after a triple-bogey seven following two wild drives on the 18th, when a par would have made the 22-year-old the only player in the field to break 70.

Spieth Eases Ahead of Stenson

Jordan Spieth birdied the final hole to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship.

The 22-year-old, one of five players who will automatically claim the FedExCup title this week, carded a birdie-two at the par-three last to close a two-under 68 and move one-shot clear of overnight leader Henrik Stenson in Atlanta.

After bouncing back from a dropped shot at the first with an eight-foot gain at the third, Stenson temporarily saw his lead cut to one when he followed a blemish at the tenth with a three-putt bogey at the 11th.

Paul Casey had closed the gap with back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh but failed to pick up another stroke all afternoon, while Rory McIlroy's four gains in a seven hole stretch around the turn briefly moved him within one of the Swede.

Stenson restored his two-shot cushion by rolling in a 22-footer at the 14th, only to see Spieth half the gap by sliding in an eight-foot gain at the next.

A double-bogey at the last from McIlroy saw him back four adrift, as a missed long-range par-save from Stenson at the penultimate hole saw Spieth move in to a tie for the lead heading to the last.

As the Swede two-putted from 30 feet for par to close a two-over 72, Spieth rolled in 20-foot gain to take the outright lead at eight under.

Four birdies on the back nine helped Rickie Fowler to a round-of-the-day 67 in tricky conditions to claim a tie for third alongside Casey, with Zach Johnson joining McIlroy a further stroke back.

World No 1 Jason Day posted consecutive gains on the back nine, but will still head in to the final round in the group eight shots off the pace after a level-par 70 at East Lake.

G'Day as Jason Hits No.1

Jason Day leapfrogged Rory McIlroy at the top of the world rankings with a six-shot victory at the BMW Championship title at Conway Farms near Chicago on Sunday.

The 27-year-old secured his fourth win in six tournaments with a final round of 69 to finish on 22 under par, having shot 61, 63 and 69 in the opening rounds.

Daniel Berger of the US also closed with a two-under 69 to reach 16 under for the tournament and earn outright second place, with Scott Piercy making birdie at the last to clinch third at 15 under and JB Holmes, Rickie Fowler and McIlroy tying for fourth one further shot adrift.

“I feel good. Just all the work ever since I was a little kid trying to get to No1 in the world and today I did it, which was great,” said Day. “To have an opportunity, knowing I had to win this week to gain that spot and stepping up and doing it was fantastic.”

He follows in the steps of a fellow Queenslander, Greg Norman, in sitting on top of the rankings.

EA Sports End Woods Deal

Electronic Arts announced Monday that it would be ending its 15-year relationship with the golfer, the namesake for the "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" video game series.

"We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors," said Daryl Holt, the company's vice president and general manager, in a statement, calling it a "mutual decision."

EA's "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" franchise has sold $771 million worth of games over the course of its lifetime, according to market tracking company NPD Group.

"We had an incredible run," said Woods' agent Mark Steinberg, who explained the latest contract had expired. "Outside of [John] Madden, you would be hard pressed to find a sports figure that meant as much to a video game company as Tiger meant to EA. But times are changing and EA had to re-evaluate the partnership and frankly so did we."

Steinberg said he's currently in negotiations with another company regarding Woods' video game rights. EA noted it will continue to use the PGA Tour name on the game.

Although EA officials publicly said Woods' extramarital affairs and the fallout didn't hurt his status, the company chose to have him share the cover in recent years with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Arnold Palmer.

The story was earlier reported by the Sports Business Journal.

It has been a rough couple of months for Electronic Arts. Last month, the video game company agreed to stop making its college football game as part of a settlement with ex-players. Despite its recent issues, shares of the company's stock are up 108 percent over the last year through the close of trading Monday.

As a result of the scandal that surrounded Woods' personal life, Accenture, AT&T, Gatorade and Tag Heuer either severed or didn't renew their deals with him.

With EA gone, only two sponsors who were with Woods in 2009 remain: Nike, which first signed him when he turned pro in 1996 and renewed its deal this year, and fractional plane sharing company NetJets. Woods also has deals with Fuse and Rolex, as well as an Asia-only deal with Kowa.
