Hector "Macho" Camacho 1962 - 2012

Puerto Rican boxing great Hector "Macho" Camacho has died in hospital after being taken off his life support machines, doctors have said.

The former boxer was clinically brain dead after being shot in the head on Tuesday. He was in a deep coma and unresponsive, the director of the hospital treating him, Dr Ernesto Torres, told reporters.

Camacho suffered a heart attack after being wounded in a drive-by shooting outside the capital, San Juan.

"We have done all we can do," Dr Torres said, adding that brain studies had shown irregular and intermittent activity.

The bullet "damaged three arteries that run through the neck and as a result blood is not flowing well" to Camacho's brain, he added.

Camacho, 50, was sitting in a car outside a bar on Tuesday with a friend when it was fired on.

His friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed in the attack. Police say they do not know of any motives for the shooting.

Camacho fought some of the great names of boxing - Oscar de la Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard and Felix Trinidad.

But in recent years he was convicted of burglary, found in possession of drugs and the subject of domestic abuse complaints from his former wife.

He continued to box, losing a fight to Saul Duran in May 2010, and had been discussing another bout next year.

Former Liverpool youngster and Real Betis defender Miki Roque has died at the age of 23 following a long battle against cancer.

Roque was diagnosed with cancer in March 2011 and he underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his pelvis.

However, it was confirmed on Sunday evening that Roque has passed away.

"Miki Roque had been battling pelvic cancer since March 2011, a struggle that he fought with fortitude and determination.

"Real Betis send their deepest condolences to the Roque family."

Roque moved to Liverpool in 2005 and he was part of the club's FA Youth Cup winning team during the 2005/06 season.

The following campaign he made his only first-team appearance for the Reds, coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League tie against Galatasaray.

He undertook loan spells at Oldham Athletic, Xerez and Cartagena before being released by Liverpool in 2009.

Betis offered Roque the chance to kick-start his career in their reserve side before he was promoted to first-team duty.

A Liverpool statement read: "Liverpool Football Club was today saddened to hear news that former player Miki Roque has lost his battle with cancer aged 23.

"Everyone at Liverpool Football Club would like to send their thoughts to Miki's family at this sad time."
