PSV Pip Ajax for Eredivisie Title

PSV Eindhoven retained the Dutch league title after rivals Ajax Amsterdam blew their chance when they failed to beat second-bottom De Graafschap in a dramatic final round of matches on Sunday.

PSV won 3-1 at PEC Zwolle to move to 84 points from 34 games, two more than Ajax who were held to a 1-1 draw when victory would have made them champions on goal difference.

Luuk de Jong netted twice for PSV to take his season tally to 26 goals, one behind AZ Alkmaar’s Vincent Janssen at the top of the scorers list, after Jurgen Locadia had given them an early lead.

It was a comfortable victory for manager Phillip Cocu to ensure back-to-back league titles at the expense of Ajax who will remember this day for many years as one of missed opportunity.

They led the league for most of the season, only to falter against a team they have beaten in their last 13 meetings dating back to 2000.

Amin Younes gave Ajax a 16th-minute lead to set them on their way but Bryan Smeets equalised for De Graafschap 10 minutes after halftime when he drilled the ball into the corner of the net from the edge of the area.

Ajax had almost 60 percent possession and 21 shots on goal, but a precious second eluded them.

De Graafschap now enter the relegation playoffs along with Willem II, who could not escape the bottom three despite a victory at Roda JC.

Excelsior Rotterdam claimed a 2-0 win at relegated Cambuur to secure their survival while third-placed Feyenoord sealed a 1-0 home victory over NEC.

They will play in the Europa League next season along with AZ Alkmaar who finished fourth.

Utrecht, Heracles Almelo, Groningen and PEC Zwolle will contest the Europa League playoff competition.

Atletico Squeeze Past PSV

Getty Images
After 210 goalless minutes over two legs, Atlético Madrid got the better of a high-quality penalty shootout, winning 8-7 after 16 spot-kicks to reach the last eight of the Champions League.

Juanfran slotted home the winning kick, moments after Luciano Narsingh had smashed the bar with PSV’s eighth effort.

The teams had battled to a 0-0 stalemate over 90 minutes, just as they had in the first leg in Eindhoven.

And no one could find the breakthrough in extra-time, meaning the tie was decided from the spot.

Fourteen successful penalties followed, with both Atléti’s Jan Oblak and PSV’s Jeroen Zoet struggling to get close to many attempts in what was a high-quality shootout.

Then Narsingh, introduced as a late substitute at the end of extra-time, crashed his effort on to the bar and Juanfran put Diego Simeone’s side into the quarter-finals for the third season in succession.

Stillitano Seeks Relevant Champions League

Closing off European football competitions to include only elite clubs could make them far richer, according to the American sports executive who has held talks with the leading English Premier League teams about a shake-up to long-established league structures.

The Relevent Sports chairman, Charlie Stillitano, held talks with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United on Tuesday in London about this year’s International Champions Cup (ICC), an annual pre-season friendly tournament organised by his company. Stillitano confirmed they also discussed “restructuring the Champions League” – an issue high on the European Club Association agenda amid a power vacuum at Uefa.

Stillitano revealed that the European governing body has been keen on working with the ICC, which already attracts some of the world’s wealthiest teams to compete in games across the globe for a lucrative but meaningless prize. “We have even talked to Uefa in the past because they had an interest in our summer tournament,” Stillitano told the US satellite radio station SiriusXM. “That is something they would like to integrate into their portfolio.”

Joining forces with Relevent’s ICC would currently be incompatible with Uefa’s existing sponsorships. There are no plans with Uefa presently on the table but discussions have not been closed off.

Arsenal are the only team from the talks to go on the record in denying they advocate a breakaway Super League for Europe’s leading clubs.

Discussions within the ECA about the merits of advocating guaranteed Champions League places for prestigious teams come at a time when Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all in danger of missing out on qualifying for Europe’s top competition next season.

“What would Manchester United argue: did we create soccer or did Leicester create [it]?” said Stillitano, who met United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, on Tuesday. “Let’s call it the money pot created by soccer and the fandom around the world. Who has had more of an integral role, Manchester United or Leicester? It’s a wonderful, wonderful story – but you could see it from Manchester United’s point of view, too.”

If the Premier League season ended now, Leicester and Tottenham would qualify for the Champions League alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

“Maybe that is absolutely spectacular unless you are a Manchester United fan, Liverpool fan … or a Chelsea fan,” Stillitano said. “I guess they don’t have a birthright to be in it every year but it’s the age-old argument: US sports franchises versus what they have in Europe. There are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful elements to relegation and promotion and there are good arguments for a closed system.”

Stillitano believes Europe’s biggest clubs deserve to make more cash from the Champions League, given their contribution to making it such a financial success. He said fans are more likely to watch the Juventus v Bayern Munich and Arsenal v Barcelona games in the current round of 16 rather than matches involving PSV Eindhoven and Ghent.

"This is going to sound arrogant and it’s the furthest thing from it … but suddenly when you see the teams we have this summer in the ICC you are going to shake your head and say, ‘Isn’t that the Champions League?’” Stillitano said. “No, the Champions League is PSV and Ghent.”

Voicing the complaints he hears from clubs, Stillitano said: “I could make a lot more money, I can be a lot more visible, I can help my sponsors out but right now I am locked into doing certain things that are really historic.”

PSV Eindhoven v Atletico Madrid - Preview

PSV Eindhoven will miss striker Luuk de Jong when they entertain Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.

Philip Cocu's side won all their home games in the group stage, but must take on 2014 runners-up Atletico without the suspended De Jong who has scored 17 goals this season to help lift PSV to the top of the Eredivisie.

Cocu, though, will be encouraged by the return of influential Mexican midfielder Andres Guardado following a hamstring injury.

"Simeone is bringing success back to Atlético. You can see his character as a player reflected in his team – I applaud that. They have a clear style of play. Would I settle for a 0-0 draw? Keeping a clean sheet could be very important." said Cocu

"Atlético have a consistent side, they're a great team unit, they won't give anything away. They always play the same way – they are winners and they play a compact game despite a busy fixture list. They are a nice example of everybody playing for each other and for the team. You have to be prepared and give your all every time."

PSV have kept clean sheets in their last three domestic league games to edge one point ahead of second-placed Ajax.

Second-placed Atletico slipped eight points adrift of Barcelona after Sunday's goalless draw at home to Villarreal, but will also take heart from a consistent rearguard that has conceded 11 goals in 25 La Liga games this season.

Coach Diego Simeone said his team were still on course to achieve their targets.

"If you look at the objectives we set at the beginning of the season we are on the right track and, apart from Barcelona who are different to all the rest, it's hard for all of us," explained Simeone.

Atletico won 13 points out of 18 in the Champions League group stage and will hope to repeat the 3-0 win they recorded in Eindhoven in the 2008/09 Champions League when the two clubs were in the same first-round section.

The return match at the Vicente Calderon is on March 15.

Gary Neville New Valencia Coach

Gary Neville has been appointed the new head coach of Valencia until the end of the season.

Neville has been working as an England coach and as an award-winning analyst for Sky Sports since retiring as a player in 2011 but now takes up his first managerial role.

The former Manchester United captain - whose brother Phil was named co-caretaker following Nuno's decision last week to step down as boss - has agreed a five-month contract and will continue his role in Roy Hodgson's set-up.

Neville will be unveiled to the media on Thursday afternoon (3pm, UK time) and take charge on Sunday ahead of Valencia's Champions League game against Lyon on Wednesday.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity with Valencia," Neville told the club's official website.

"Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans.

"I am really looking forward to working with the club's talented group of players and am excited about the challenge ahead."

Neville is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time, having won 20 trophies including eight Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns.

He spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford - making more than 600 appearances - and won 85 England caps.

England boss Hodgson had tipped the former defender, whose international career spanned more than a decade, to eventually make the move into management.

"He'll become a very fine manager in time," Hodgson, speaking earlier this year, said.

"I think he's a very good coach now. He'll become an even better coach with experience. He'll enjoy working with players. I think players will enjoy working with him.

"He'd be a loss to England."

The Nevilles have a connection to the Spanish side through owner Peter Lim, the Singaporean businessman who bought a stake in Salford City from the brothers and their former Manchester United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

Phil Neville, whose role is yet to be confirmed, left his own job as a pundit in June to join the coaching staff at the Mestalla.

Valencia remain in contention for the Champions League knockout stages but have struggled in the league this term, winning just five of 11 games after last season's fourth-placed finish.

Their next La Liga match is at home to champions Barcelona on Saturday and Phil Neville will take charge of that game along with co-caretaker Voro.
