Spurs Tied After Durant Thunder

Getty Images
Kevin Durant matched his career playoff high with 41 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 111-97 on Sunday night to tie the Western Conference semi-final series 2-2.

Durant scored 29 points on 10-for-13 shooting in the second half.

Russell Westbrook finished with 14 points and 15 assists, Dion Waiters added 17 points, and Steven Adams had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma City. The Thunder shot 50.6% overall and 57% in the second half to avoid going back to San Antonio down 3-1 for Game 5 on Tuesday night.

Tony Parker led San Antonio with 22 points, Kawhi Leonard had 21, and LaMarcus Aldridge 20.

San Antonio led by 11 early in the second quarter, but the Thunder rallied and took a 45-44 lead on a three-pointer by Durant with 1:47 left in the first half. The Spurs closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, with all the points coming from Leonard and Aldridge, to take a 53-45 lead at the break. Durant and Westbrook were a combined six for 21 from the field in the first half.

Boris Diaw’s three-pointer from the corner in the closing seconds of the third quarter gave the Spurs an 81-77 lead heading into the fourth.

Durant took over early in the final quarter. His back-to-back threes gave the Thunder a 93-87 lead. Enes Kanter’s fast-break dunk pushed the lead to 100-93.

San Antonio hung tough, but a baseline floater, a layup and a corner three by Durant made it 108-97.

Curry Ties NBA Point Record

Getty Images
Stephen Curry tied an NBA record Wednesday by making a three-pointer in his 127th consecutive regular-season game.

The reigning NBA MVP and three-point leader tied the record just 78 seconds into the Warriors’ win over Miami, on his first shot of the evening. He shares the mark with Atlanta’s Kyle Korver and has a chance to take the record outright when Golden State play at Orlando on Thursday.

“That’s a pretty outrageous number,” Curry said before Wednesday’s game. “When I was talking about it last year, I knew where he was. I was at 40 or 45. And I remember hearing what his number was. That’s crazy — every night you’re hitting a three. Whether you’re shooting well or not, you’re still finding a way to knock down at least one. The longevity of that record is pretty remarkable.”

Curry’s last game without a three-pointer was on 11 November 2014. He has made at least one in 202 of his past 203 games, and is on pace to smash the single-season record for three-pointers he established a year ago. “Steph is a lot better,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Which is scary, because he was the MVP last season.”

Curry entered Wednesday with 260 three-pointers this season, 88 more than anyone in the league. His teammate Klay Thompson came into the night No2 this season in threees, with 172.

Curry said he finds significance in the mark. “There’s no trophy for that,” Curry said. “But it’s a really cool situation to be in. That’s a big part of my game.”

Bryant Bids Farewell to All Star Game

Getty Images
Kobe Bryant had his NBA All-Star game farewell and the next generation of the West’s best sent him off a winner, rolling to a record-setting 196-173 victory over the East on Sunday night.

The first All-Star Game outside the US was the highest-scoring ever, with both teams piling up more than any team had ever managed. Bryant didn’t provide much of the offense but many of the memories. He finished with just 10 points, so few that he lost his career lead in All-Star Game scoring to LeBron James, even though James also had a quiet night.

But Russell Westbrook scored 31 points in his second straight All-Star MVP performance, Stephen Curry added 26, Anthony Davis 24, and Kevin Durant 23. Paul George finished with 41 for the East, tying Westbrook’s total from last year in New York that was one off Wilt Chamberlain’s record. John Wall added 22 points.

James finished with 13 points, just enough to move ahead of Bryant for most ever in the All-Star Game. He has 291, while Bryant, who is retiring after this season, leaves with 290. He checked out with 1:06 left to cheers and hugs from his fellow All-Stars who now put up points in bunches the way Bryant did for so long.

Bryant had seven assists and six rebounds, but shot just 4 for 11 in a game where there isn’t really much defense and had never been less. The 369 combined points were 48 more than last year’s record, and both clubs blew away the previous individual team record of 163. But people just wanted to see Bryant play, not necessarily play well.

The pregame was a celebration first of Canada, then of Bryant. Player introductions came from two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and Grammy winner Drake. Canadian Nelly Furtado sang her country’s national anthem.

Then it was time for two video tributes for Bryant, whose 18 All-Star selections are second only to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Bryant thanked fans who have given him more than 30m votes in his career, and as he finished speaking all the All-Stars lined up in the background to salute him. He took the opening jump ball against James — neither team had a true centre voted to the starting lineup — and each East starter took a turn early covering Bryant.

Toronto hosted the very first NBA game in 1946. No one who saw that game would recognise the way it looked Sunday.

Curry and Durant launched shots from spots where only buzzer-beating heaves were once attempted, and Westbrook put together another combination of speed and force that turned it into a rare All-Star blowout in the second half. The West has won five of the last six even without longtime mainstay Bryant, who hadn’t played since 2013 because of injuries. But players like Westbrook, Durant and Curry are more than ready to shoulder the load.

At 37, Bryant has trouble keeping up with the youngsters — especially the really young ones. Chris Paul’s son stole the ball from him as Bryant warmed up for the second half. But he was the star without playing a starring a role. He had said he didn’t want players forcing him the ball in an effort to make him the MVP — he’s already got four of them in this game — but he was never far from the centre of attention.

James crouched in his defensive stance and pounded the floor when he found himself covering Bryant out on the wing in the second quarter. But come on, nobody is really here to play defence, at least that early. The West led 92-90 at the break, both teams surpassing the previous record of 89 points in a half.

The game goes back to the US next year, and for the first time since 1997 won’t have Bryant.

He made his All-Star début in New York in 1998, a game also remembered for Michael Jordan’s last with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan, now chairman of the Hornets, was on hand Sunday for a ceremonial passing of the All-Star torch from Toronto to Charlotte, the 2017 host.

Cavaliers Stun Spurs on Saturday

Getty Images
LeBron James scored 29 points and Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving added 21 apiece as the Cleveland Cavaliers finally took down one of the NBA’s elite teams, beating the San Antonio Spurs 117-103 on Saturday night.

The Cavs won their fourth straight under coach Tyronn Lue, who was promoted after David Blatt was fired on 22 January. Cleveland came in 0-5 against San Antonio, Golden State and Chicago, three top-tier teams who figure to contend with them for a title this season.

Lue has the Cavs playing at a faster pace and the Spurs, who were again without center Tim Duncan, couldn’t keep up with them. Duncan missed his third straight game with a sore right knee.

Kawhi Leonard scored 24 and LaMarcus Aldridge 15 for the Spurs, who lost for just the second time in 16 games. They lost to the Warriors on Monday.

Cleveland’s 117 points were the second-most given up this season by San Antonio, which came in allowing a league-best 90.6 points per game. The Cavs had more than that after three quarters.

Irving (10) and Matthew Dellavedova (8) scored Cleveland’s first 18 points in the fourth quarter. James scored the next three when he was fouled while going to the basket by San Antonio’s Patty Mills, who was flicked aside like a gnat by the four-time MVP on his way to a layup and three-point play.

Down by 17 points at the half, the Spurs scored the first eight of the third quarter, a spurt that prompted an oh-no-here-they-come vibe through Cleveland’s loud crowd, which was in playoff form.

But the Cavs responded with a flurry that showcased their offensive depth. Love and Dellavedova hit three-pointers and James powered inside for several baskets, helping Cleveland push its lead to 88-69 late in the third. James scored 16 in the quarter.

James, too, made one of his signature defensive plays by chasing down Spurs guard Manu Ginobili on a breakaway and blocking his shot at the rim.

Elsewhere, Harrison Barnes hit a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining and Golden State escaped with a 108-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Klay Thompson had 32 points and Stephen Curry scored 23 for the Warriors, who nearly blew a 24-point second-half lead. Draymond Green added 10 points and 13 rebounds for Golden State, who opened a three-game road trip with their sixth straight victory while matching the NBA’s best start through 47 games.

Isaiah Canaan had 18 points to lead the 76ers, who dropped to 7-41 but nearly pulled off the most improbable victory of the NBA season.

“It shows we have no letdown, no backdown,” Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said.

Philadelphia trailed by double-digits most of the second half until a late 15-2 run tied the game at 105 with 22.3 seconds left. The Warriors won it when Curry passed inside to Green, who fired outside to Barnes on the right baseline.

“We kind of went into it knowing they were going to trap Steph, so whoever it was that got the ball tried to make a play,” Barnes said. “[Green] made that kick to the corner. I just let it ride.”

King James Blamed for Blatt Exit

Getty Images
Cavaliers star LeBron James said “it sucks” that people think he was behind coach David Blatt’s shock exit – but feels “people get it so misconstrued because I’m a smart basketball player.”

An exasperated James said to reporters on Wednesday: “What do you guys want me to do? Turn my brain off because I have a huge basketball IQ?”

James insisted he had nothing to do with Cleveland’s decision to fire Blatt, who was surprisingly let go just months after taking the Cavaliers to the NBA finals.

“It sucks,” James said. “But what can I do about it? I’ve never, in my time since I picked up a basketball, ever undermined a coach, ever disrespected a coach. You ask any of my little league coaches, my high school coaches, coaches I’ve played for in tournaments, camps, my NBA coaches. I’ve always respected what they wanted to do. And I’m not the owner of a team, I’m not the GM of a team. I’m the player of a team.”

The four-time NBA MVP has been labelled a “coach killer” for apparently orchestrating in Blatt’s departure, in order to get Tyronn Lue, his preferred coach, into the top role. But that just isn’t true, said LeBron.

“People get it so misconstrued because I’m a smart basketball player and I’ve voiced my opinion about certain things, which I did when I was here my first stint with Paul Silas and Mike Brown. Which I did in Miami with Coach Spo [Erik Spoelstra]. Which I did with Blatt and I’ll do with T-Lue. And at the end of the day, they’ll still have their final call.”

“I don’t know,” James said. “What do you guys want me to do, turn my brain off because I have a huge basketball IQ? If that’s what they want me to do, I’m not going to do it, because I’ve got so much to give to the game. There’s no difference for me telling my team-mates or telling guys how to get better with their game. If I feel I got something that will help our team, ultimately, I like to give it. It helped me get two titles.”

“So, but I think it does suck that people want to throw my name in dirt for no particular reason, because of speculation or whatever the case may be. But you can’t worry about it too much. I got 14 guys here. I got a fan base here and a fan base all over the world that loves what I do, and they respect what I do, and I can’t worry about a select group of people that wants to use their negative energy to take away my positive energy. I can’t allow that to happen.”

Warriors Curry Cavaliers

Steph Curry scored 35 points in three quarters, Andre Iguodala added 20 and Golden State returned to the arena where they won the NBA championship last season as they embarrassed the Cleveland Cavaliers 132-98 on Monday night.

The Warriors built a 30-point lead in the first half, pushed their advantage to 43 after half-time and bounced back from a shocking loss in Detroit over the weekend by winning their fifth straight over Cleveland.

Only a late flurry of points helped the Cavs avoid their worst home loss in franchise history. “They did what they wanted,” LeBron James said.

Curry made seven three-pointers — his last put the Warriors ahead by 40 late in the third quarter — and the reigning league MVP seemed right at home in Quicken Loans Arena, where the Warriors clinched their first title since 1975 last June. On Sunday, Curry said he hoped the visitor’s locker room “still smells a little bit like champagne.”

Curry, however, later downplayed that boast. “The last time I was there we had a trophy, we had champagne and we had goggles,” Curry said, recalling last season’s Game 6. “We had a good time.”

With Curry leading the charge, the Warriors overwhelmed the Cavs, who lost at Golden State 89-83 on Christmas Day and could do little to stop the defending champions.

James scored 16 for Cleveland, who went 5-1 on their longest road trip this season. And like last season’s finals, James didn’t have much help. Kyrie Irving had eight points on three-of-11 shooting and Kevin Love had three points in 21 forgettable minutes.

“Against the top teams you want to play well and we haven’t done that. We’re 0-3,” James said of Cleveland’s record against Golden State and San Antonio, the West’s top powers. “Tonight was an example of how far we have to go to win a championship.”

Even though Cleveland are healthier now than in December, an expected battle between two of the league’s best teams never materialized. This one belonged to Golden State from beginning to end.

A frustrating night for the Cavs bubbled over in the third quarter when JR Smith lowered his shoulder and charged into Harrison Barnes, flattening the Warriors forward. Smith, who arrived at the arena less than an hour before tip-off, was ejected.

Cavs coach David Blatt said he was not aware of Smith’s tardiness. “If that’s so, it’s not a good thing for sure,” Blatt said. Smith was gone when Cleveland’s locker room opened for reporters.

Draymond Green added 16 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Warriors, who rested their starters in the fourth.

Curry quickly reminded an amped-up Cleveland crowd what he did to the Cavs last summer by burying a three-pointer on his first shot. He made three more long-range shots in the first quarter while the Warriors opened a 34-21 lead.

Golden State were just warming up.

Green’s three-pointer put the Warriors up by 16, and Curry scored a three-point play to give Golden State a 23-point lead. On Cleveland’s next possession, James was backing down in the lane when Curry came up from behind, stripped the ball and went the length of the floor for an easy layup to make it 57-32.

“They definitely played like champions,” Irving said.

LeBron Gives Ellie Bad Day

The wife of the Australian golfer Jason Day was taken away in a neck brace on a stretcher after being accidentally crunched by Cleveland superstar LeBron James while watching an NBA match.

Jason and Ellie Day had courtside seats at Quicken Loans Arena for the game between Cleveland and Oklahoma City Thunder.

The four-time NBA MVP was chasing a loose ball when he tumbled towards the seats, and Ellie Day bore the full impact of James’s 113kg frame.

James said in a post-match interview shown on ESPN: “Obviously her health is very important and hopefully she’s doing well. The guys told us she’s doing great now. Going for a loose ball I was just trying to keep the possession going and I hate that that was the end result of it.”

Ellie Day was taken to a local hospital for treatment, as reported by cleveland.com and the ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst, while James was also quoted as saying: “She squeezed my hand, said she was fine. I think she was just a little weary.”

James scored 33 points for Cleveland in their 104-100 win, which halted Oklahoma’s six-game winning run.

The Cavs coach David Blatt, who spent years coaching in Europe, has long been worried about courtside fan safety. “It’s always concerned me, the sideline seats,” he said. “Always concerned me, because things like that, when you’re talking about players of this speed and physicality and effort level, it’s not a simple thing.

“The powers that be are the ones that really need to decide how to deal with that. He [James] made an honest attempt at the basketball, that’s all, obviously. We all hope she’s OK.”

The league has recently taken steps to improve safety, including cutting the number of photographers allowed to sit along the baselines to reduce the risk of contact with players.

LeBron Like Mike with Nike

Nike has signed the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar to a lifetime deal that’s been described as the largest single-athlete guarantee in the company’s 44-year history.

While a spokesperson for the Oregon-based company declined to reveal the dollar value of the deal, a source told ESPN that it easily surpasses the 10-year, $300m contract Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant signed with Nike last year.

James’ relationship with Nike began in 2003, when the parties agreed to a seven-year, $90m contract ahead of that year’s NBA draft lottery.

Shortly before that deal expired in 2010, a nine-year extension was signed for an undisclosed amount.

“LeBron and I have been in love and obsessed with Nike since we were kids,” Maverick Carter, James’ childhood friend, confidant and long-time business manager, told ESPN on Monday. “Having built a totally innovative global business with them has truly been a dream come true. We are so excited to be taking the business to an entirely new level.

“For LeBron, he’s thrilled to know he’s a Nike guy for life.”
