North Carolina coach Roy Williams wept. Marcus Paige cried so hard that his teeth chattered. And the rest of the the team were simply shattered by the preposterous last-second sequence that gave Villanova the championship and left UNC heading home empty-handed.

Kris Jenkins nailed the game-winner for Villanova with barely any time left, in one of the most exciting finishes in an NCAA title game in the tournemant’s history. UNC’s players, who had fought back from a 10-point deficit to level the game when Paige hit a brilliant three with four seconds left, were stunned.

Williams said he felt powerless – a feeling to which he’s not usually accustomed.

“I just didn’t go guard Kris,” Williams said of Jenkins, whose miraculous shot at the buzzer to give Villanova the 77-74 victory.

“It was helpless,” Williams said, rubbing his face. “It was not a good feeling.”

The pain was clear on Williams’ face, conveying just how desperately he wished he could say or do something to help his guys deal with the loss that broke a 10-game winning streak.

“I’m not very good because I can’t take away the hurt,” he said. “I’m not very good because I can’t change that. I told them I loved them. I told them I wish I could have helped them more. That I appreciated them from the bottom of my heart.”

He and the Tar Heels endured a flood of emotions in the final seconds of Monday night’s game. They thought overtime was a foregone conclusion after Paige tied it up at the end.

“We were 4.7 seconds away from winning the game because I told the team all we had to do was get to overtime and the game would be ours,” Paige said. “And I truly believe that, I think our whole team believes that.”

Instead it was Villanova who lifted the trophy. One of the most incredible climaxes to a basketball game anyone can remember.

“It’s hard because at some point tonight I have to take this jersey off and I never get to put it back on,” Paige said.

Marcus Paige made three 3-pointers in the second half to help North Carolina get untracked from long range and stifle a Syracuse rally for an 83-66 victory that moved the Tar Heels one win from the program’s sixth title.

The Tar Heels (33-6) were 0 for 11 from 3-point range midway through the second half, and Syracuse trimmed a 17-point deficit to seven before Paige found his range. He hit three 3s over the span of seven minutes to end Syracuse’s chances.

Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson led North Carolina with 16 points each. Paige finished with 13.

North Carolina, the only No1 seed in the Final Four, will play No2 Villanova on Monday for the title.

Syracuse (23-14), the first No10 seed to make the Final Four, got 22 points from Trevor Cooney

Tiger Not Out of Woods

Tiger Woods does not expect to compete again soon after admitting he faces a "tedious and long" recovery from back surgery.

Woods had an operation on his back for a second time last month after a routine check discovered a fragmented disc pinching a nerve.

He last played at the Wyndham Championship on August 23, where he tied for 10th in what was his best finish on the PGA Tour for nearly two years.

His first surgery came just before the US Masters in 2014, when he was out of action for nearly three months, although he later admitted he returned too early.

"Rehab will be soon, and it will be tedious and long," he said. "The last one, it took me awhile to get back. Some players on tour have done the same procedure and to be back pain-free it took them over a year."

Woods, who turns 40 in December, has not won a major championship since the US Open in 2008 and remains on 14 majors, four short of Jack Nicklaus' record, but the world No 334 has not given up hope of catching 'The Golden Bear'.

Some players on tour have done the same procedure and to be back pain-free it took them over a year.

"It's important for me to have more than 18 majors when all is said and done," he said. "It took Jack his whole career to achieve it and mine is not done yet. I believe that I have a very good record for 20 years on the tour.

"The main thing is to get fit and to reach my 40s with good health to be as successful as Vijay, who won most of his tournaments at that age. It's something that I hope I will be able to do," he said. "I want to play at an elite level with the new kids for a long, long time."

Woods has not won since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational for his 79th career win on the PGA Tour, just three short of the record held by Sam Snead.

"I need to be healthy again," he added. "This year I tried to play after the back surgery and it wasn't fun because all of the pain. Also after my last surgery, I was changing my swing and to be able to do that successfully you have to practice a lot, and I could not practice because I was doing the rehab.

"It was a very complicated situation because of that."

Woods has not set a timetable on when he will start rehabilitation or a date for his likely return.

"I need to return with my explosiveness, and to do that, I need to practice for longer periods of time," he said. "It's going to take several months of hard work."
