Frankel Storms Lockinge Stakes

Frankel maintained his 100% record by storming to victory by five lengths in the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

The four-year-old Sir Henry Cecil-trained colt, the 2-7 favourite, powered home five lengths clear of Excelebration (100-30), who finished second to Frankel for a fourth time.

Dubawi Gold (16-1) was the best of the rest, a further four lengths back.

"He's not like anything I've sat on before or probably ever will again," said delighted jockey Tom Queally.

Frankel was already the world's highest-rated racehorse before Saturday's victory, having won all nine of his races, including six Group One outings.

Winner of the Dewhurst Stakes to cap his juvenile season, Frankel posted four more Group One victories last season in the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

He showed no signs of a leg injury sustained at Newmarket in April, when his racing career was in the balance.

Despite missing 10 days' work before receiving a positive scan, Frankel seemed in ideal condition.

"It's a great relief he's come back. He's grown up from last year, he's thicker set," added Queally. "If you look at him now, he's the real deal - he's filled out since last year."

Cecil, who paid tribute to the stable staff for bringing Frankel back to full health, said: "His first race is never his best but we had to bring him here as he needed a race before Ascot and he has done it very easily.

"He is stronger this year and Tom said his acceleration is incredible."

Bullet Train, Frankel's regular work partner and three-parts brother, shot out of the stalls, with Queally happy to sit in just two lengths behind.

Frankel then showed his class to take the front and easily put daylight between himself and the five other runners.

Excelebration's trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "Frankel is a great horse, isn't he? I'm delighted for everybody involved with him."

Frankel Faces Tough Workout

Connections of Frankel believe their superstar colt will have to bring his "A-game" to the table if he is to land the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

Sir Henry Cecil's four-year-old carried all before him last season, ending the term undefeated in five starts, which included victories in the 2000 Guineas, the Sussex Stakes and the QEII Stakes.

He is a short-priced favourite to make a victorious return in the Group One event at the Berkshire venue and although most consider the result to be a foregone conclusion, owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager, Teddy Grimthorpe, feels the Galileo colt must be at his best to triumph.

"He's in great shape and hopefully he'll progress through the year," he said.

"The deceptive thing about Frankel is his stride - it's just how he does it, he does it so easily.

"There is no such thing as a gimme in this sport, so hopefully he'll bring his A-game to the table.

"You either bring your best or you don't bother at all.

"What we want to see is a good, solid performance and this is obviously the first stepping-stone on what we hope will be a very good year.

"His style is his own and we are all very conscious that we have something pretty extraordinary on our hands."

At one stage in April, it looked as though Frankel may never race again after rumours abounded about the severity of a leg injury he sustained on the Newmarket gallops.

However, after thorough investigation, it transpired the problem was only minor and Frankel has barely looked back since.

Cecil took the chance to prove his well-being with a racecourse workout at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas day.

"Considering Frankel had a 10-day setback I am pleased with the progress he has made in preparation for the Lockinge at Newbury on Saturday," the Newmarket handler toldwww.sirhenrycecil.com.

"Some of the opposition have had a race, which is a great advantage, but I feel he has done enough to give a good account of himself.

"One thing I am pretty sure about is that he will come on for the race and will be a stronger and more settled horse this year."

"The scans we did on his leg were pretty unequivocal and all his work since has been absolutely first class," added Grimthorpe.

"He worked fantastically well when he went to Racecourse Side the other day and hopefully he can prove himself what we know him to be on Saturday.

"I think and dream of Frankel on a very unhealthy basis! The various scenarios he's been through in my mind really are quite spectacular.

"We are really looking forward to this year and the interest in him has been really overwhelming - just fantastic."

While Frankel sticks at a mile for his return, the Abdullah team are hoping he will prove his mettle over 10 furlongs later this year.

Grimthorpe told Racing UK: "I think at this stage, if all went well, Henry is leaning towards the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot for his next start and obviously the hope later in the season is that he'll be here (at York) for the Juddmonte International."

Tom Queally has been aboard Frankel for each of his nine victories and was delighted with the colt's racecourse gallop.

He said: "It was just to get him out on a racecourse and get him to see something different.

"It's not that he's difficult to ride, he's just a bit keen and he's got such a big stride, you are a passenger on him.

"If you look at him now he's so strong - he's a bull now this year.

"You can't break his big stride and that's why he's in control.

"I'm looking forward to it and it looks like he could open his account again and keep the ball rolling."

The ground at Newbury is still riding on the soft side, and with more showers forecast, it could ease further.

That would not worry Queally, though, who said: "He won his debut in very testing conditions and he's strong enough to get through it."

The horse widely considered as Frankel's biggest threat is old foe Excelebration.

The four-year-old finished behind the world's highest-rated racehorse on three occasions last year, winning his other three starts for Italian trainer Marco Botti.

He has since moved to the stables of Aidan O'Brien and made an impressive start for new connections by landing the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh under the trainer's son, Joseph, who retains the ride at Newbury.

"It will be the first time I've ridden against Frankel and he is obviously a great horse, so I'm looking forward to it," said the jockey.

"Excelebration won very well in the Curragh and you'd like to think he'll improve for that as it was his first run of the year.

"He's obviously stepping up from a Group Three to a Group One race against Frankel, so he'll have to improve.

"We just go into the race knowing our horse is in good form and we'll just do our best and see what happens.

"He's versatile ground-wise and hopefully he'll run a big race."

Richard Hannon is keeping a careful eye on the weather as his prime contender, Strong Suit, needs quicker conditions to excel.

The four-year-old was largely campaigned over seven furlongs in 2011 but proved his aptitude for a mile when third in the Prix Jean Prat.

While he disappointed when well down the field in the Breeders' Cup Mile last November, Hannon is keen to kick off his year at Newbury if conditions are right.

"He loves top of the ground. We've declared him with that proviso. He's fine," said the trainer.

"At his best he'd want the ground to be good, fast ground. If there's any soft in it he wont run.

"We're happy with him and to start him off at Newbury if the ground is OK.

"If he doesn't run on Saturday he'll probably wait for the Queen Anne at Ascot."

Hannon has a second string to his bow in Dubawi Gold, who finished behind Frankel when second in the Guineas last year and fourth in the QEII.

He ran well when fourth in the Hong Kong Mile last December but has failed to shine in starts at Meydan and Sandown so far this year.

Hannon said: "He's been second to Frankel in the Guineas. I suppose he could be second to him again or even third, but we might as well run."

Newbury Set for Frankel Fever

Newbury are anticipating a much bigger crowd than normal for Saturday's JLT Lockinge Stakes card due to the return of superstar Frankel.

Sir Henry Cecil's four-year-old is set to make his seasonal bow in the JLT Lockinge Stakes at the Berkshire track and officials are already reporting a surge in bookings for the Group One card.

"We've taken a lot of advance bookings during the past three weeks on the back of Frankel's intended run here, but we've known about the possibility for some time and we'll be ready," said Newbury's joint managing director Stephen Higgins yesterday.

"He won the Greenham here last year before going on to take the 2000 Guineas, and we're thrilled to bits to have him come back, particularly after the injury scare which threatened to delay his return.

"Sir Henry Cecil's upbeat report on Frankel's well being last weekend heightened interest still further and, if we get good weather, we could be looking at a huge attendance.

"There's a lot of media attention being given to his return to the racecourse and that's not only good for our race sponsor, but great for racing as well, especially as it seems likely that he will face some strong opposition."

Frankel Set for Newbury Return

Unbeaten colt Frankel is on course to return in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on 19 May after his first gallop since an injury scare.

The world's top-rated Flat racehorse, trained by Sir Henry Cecil, had a seven-furlong workout at Newmarket.

Owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: "He strode out well and everyone was very pleased."

Frankel was cleared to return to training after a scan showed no serious damage from a "superficial" leg injury.

"We'll just see how we go. It was his first bit of work and he's going to have to continue to please everyone," said Grimthorpe.

"It is still the intention to run in the Lockinge, but as I said, we'll just see how we go."

Frankel has been given entries in both the one-mile Queen Anne Stakes and the 10-furlong Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, said Grimthorpe.

The Galileo colt has won each of his nine starts to date, including victories in the 2,000 Guineas, the St James's Palace Stakes, the Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Long Run Shows Form at Newbury

Long Run prepared for his defence of the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month with victory in the Denman Chase at Newbury.

Trainer Nicky Henderson's seven-year-old, ridden by Sam Waley-Cohen, was pushed to the finish by Burton Port, with What a Friend coming home third.

"He jumped really well," said winning jockey Waley-Cohen.

"He felt like different horse. He was more up for it. We learned how to set him up for a fence when you get him going quicker."

“That is exactly the confidence boost you want to go to the Gold Cup with”Jockey Sam Waley-Cohen

Long Run started as the 4-7 favourite and played a patient game as The Giant Bolster led the running for much of the race.

Henderson's top chaser then hit the front and seemed set to pull away after jumping the final fence, but stablemate Burton Port's late surge meant the Gold Cup favourite's margin of victory was only half a length.

Waley-Cohen added: "I was really pleased with his jumping. He was a little careless with the water [jump], but apart from that he's jumped really well. You couldn't ask for more from a seasoned chaser.

"That is exactly the confidence boost you want to go to the Gold Cup with."

The Cheltenham Festival runs from 13-16 March with the big race run on the final day.

Meanwhile, Ruby Walsh rode the 7-4 favourite Zarkandar to a thrilling win in the Betfair Hurdle , which like the Denman Chase was rescheduled after last Saturday's meeting was abandoned because of snow.

The 20-strong field were bunched together until the final few fences, before the pace increased with two to go.

Zarkandar, trained by Paul Nicholls, did not make his move until the final few strides when he found a small gap before claiming victory by a length and a quarter from Get Me Out Of Here and Raya Star.

Champion jockey Tony McCoy took a heavy fall at the second-last fence while well placed with Darlan, but walked away after receiving treatment on the course.

McCoy Opts for Darlan

Tony McCoy will ride Darlan in Saturday's Betfair Hurdle for which there are 22 declared runners with Sailors Warn and Ozare the only absentees.

The champion jockey had the option to partner previous winner Get Me Out Of Here (Richie McLernon) but has opted for Nicky Henderson's exciting novice, who is second favourite behind Zarkandar.

The master of Seven Barrows has also declared Soldatino (Barry Geraghty) and Erricht (Andrew Tinkler).

Paul Nicholls, trainer of the favourite, also runs Brampour (Harry Derham) and Empire Levant (Darly Jacob) with Ruby Walsh taking the ride aboard Zarkandar.

Richard Johnson has been booked to partner County Hurdle winner Final Approach for Willie Mullins, with Raya Star, Sire De Grugy and Olofi others towards the head of the market.
