Bart Starr Hazing Caused Lifelong Injury

Bart Starr’s wife Cherry has revealed that the Hall of Fame quarterback’s severe back problems stemmed from a hazing incident at college.

The injury plagued the quarterback during his career – and into his retirement – but had previously been attributed to an injury in practice during a punting exercise. But Cherry said her husband was beaten during an initiation Alabama’s varsity lettermen.

“He was hospitalized at one point in traction,” Cherry told AL.com. “That was in the days when they were initiated into the A-Club, and they had severe beatings and paddling. From all the members of the A-Club, they lined up with a big paddle with holes drilled in it, and it actually injured his back.”

One of Starr’s college team-mates, tight end Nick Germanos, agreed with Cherry’s version of events. Starr, who is now 82, has never spoken about the incident in public. “It was hell,” Germanos said. “Lord have mercy, it was a rough initiation.”

The injury was bad enough to affect Starr’s college career and the Crimson Tide went 0-10 the season after the beating. “His back was never right after that,” Cherry said. “It was horrible. It was not a football injury. It was an injury sustained from hazing. His whole back all the way up to his rib cage looked like a piece of raw meat. The bruising went all the way up his back. It was red and black and awful looking. It was so brutal.”

Starr was still considered enough of a talent to be drafted with the 200th overall pick in the 1956 draft and went on to lead the Green Bay Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls. However, Cherry said her husband still had to play in pain throughout his career. “He was in so much pain constantly,” she said. “They nearly tried anything.”

Starr is now in declining health, leaving Cherry to tell his story. She did say that he gained some relief from his injury in the 1980s after a doctor discovered a crack in his vertebrae and recommended surgery.

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

After 22 years without a playoff victory, the Kansas City Chiefs were determined not to give up the lead this time.

The Chiefs had enough points to win after jumping ahead 7-0 in the first 11 seconds, and they used relentless pressure, five turnovers and a ball-control offense to dominate the Houston Texans 30-0 in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday.

They were especially cognizant of not letting up after blowing a 28-point lead in a loss to the Colts in their last playoff appearance in 2013.

“What happened to us a couple years ago, everybody remembers that even the coaches included, so our entire mentality is about finishing,” quarterback Alex Smith said. “The mentality doesn’t change.”

They finished off the Texans early, and they had the hometown fans booing by the second quarter. Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer had the worst game of his career with four interceptions and a fumble. Houston’s defense kept the Texans close in the first half, but JJ Watt left with an injury in the third quarter, Jadeveon Clowney never even put on his jersey and the Chiefs were able to close the game out in the second half.

The Chiefs extended their NFL-best winning streak to 11 games and will face Denver or New England next week.

“We wanted to come in and dominate,” Chiefs safety Eric Berry said. “Right now we are locked in and ready for next week.

On the opening kickoff, Knile Davis got three good blocks around the 10-yard line and then simply outran the rest of the defenders for the 106-yard kickoff return score, the second-longest kickoff return TD in postseason history.

“It was a huge deal, man. It set the tempo,” Davis said. “It quieted everybody, kind of made everybody relax.”

The defense took over after that, forcing Hoyer into a fumble and a three of his career-high four interceptions before halftime to help the Chiefs (12-5) take a 13-0 lead.

“I made some bad decisions that really hurt the team,” Hoyer said.

Houston coach Bill O’Brien said he never considered benching Hoyer, but backup Brandon Weeden told a different story, saying he was warming up late in the game.

“We had talked about me going in there with Brian,” Weeden said. “Brian wanted to finish the thing out. I don’t blame him.”

Smith threw a touchdown pass late in the third and Spencer Ware added a 5-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 27-0.

Travis Kelce, who also had more than 100 yards receiving in the first meeting with the Texans this year, had another big day, finishing with eight receptions for 128 yards.

The victory breaks a streak of eight straight playoff losses by the Chiefs and is their first postseason win since beating the Oilers in January 1994. That team was led by Joe Montana and Marcus Allen.

“Was it 1994? I didn’t feel it, but I know how important it is, too,” coach Andy Reid said. “You get to the playoffs, and first round, if things don’t go well, that rips your heart out.”

Hoyer was 15 of 34 for 136 yards as Houston (9-8) lost a home playoff game for the first time. Hoyer’s performance cast more doubt on his future as the starter.

Watt missed most of the second half after injuring his groin in the third quarter. Last year’s Defensive Player of the Year and the NFL sack leader didn’t have a sack as Houston’s defense played well but couldn’t hold off an offense that got so many extra chances because of turnovers.

Watt returned a few plays after he was initially hurt, but soon left the game again when he was pushed to the ground by the head by tackle Eric Fisher.

“That’s just a dirty play,” Watt said. “But the injury was before that moment.”

Fisher said he didn’t know the play was over. Kansas City receiver Jeremy Maclin strained his right knee on the same play and didn’t return.

The Chiefs capped that drive when Smith found rookie Chris Conley in the back of the end zone for 9-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 20-0.

Houston defensive end Jared Crick got a personal foul late in the third quarter when he hit Fisher after a play, in an apparent retaliation for the Watt hit.

Down 7-0, the Texans were driving when Hoyer was sacked by Allen Bailey and fumbled. Dontari Poe recovered it at the Kansas City 42 and the Chiefs extended their lead to 10-0 on a 49-yard field goal.

Trailing 13-0, a 49-yard run by Alfred Blue got Houston to the Kansas City 13. The Texans got a first down at the two and Watt and defensive tackle Vince Wilfork came in on offense, with Watt lined up as the wildcat quarterback and Wilfork blocking. Watt took the direct snap but had nowhere to go and lost a yard on his first career carry. Hoyer was intercepted on the next play by Josh Mauga.

Hoyer had also struggled against the Chiefs in the season opener, being benched in the fourth quarter of a 27-20 loss.

Dallas Cowboys Eliminated

No more maybe for the Dallas Cowboys. They are finally eliminated from the playoff chase.
Maybe no more Matt Cassel, either.

Kellen Moore replaced an ineffective Cassel and threw a touchdown pass to Dez Bryant in his first game action in four seasons as a pro, but the Cowboys lost 19-16 to the New York Jets on Saturday night after Randy Bullock kicked a 40-yard field goal with 36 seconds remaining.

Dallas (4-10) is done in a division that doesn’t have a winning team, a year after winning 12 regular-season games and the NFC East title.

“We’ve got a long time left here this month and of course a long January. You want to be a part of this thing at this particular time. It’s very disappointing,” owner Jerry Jones said. “This is nothing like I could have envisioned. Our plan sitting here was we’d really have it together at this time.”

Washington, Philadelphia and the New York Giants are all 6-7 going into home games Sunday. The Redskins and Eagles each have two division games left, including head-to-head in Philadelphia next Saturday night, so at least one of them is assured of avoiding 10 losses.

Bullock missed a 45-yard field goal at the end of the first half, but kicked the winner eight plays after Dan Bailey’s tying 50-yard field goal, which hit the right upright and barely ricocheted through and over the crossbar with 1:55 left.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the AFC wild card-contenting Jets (9-5) have their first four-game winning streak since 2010.

Cassel once won 10 games filling in for Tom Brady in New England. But he has won only one of his seven starts for the Cowboys, the latest with two bumbling plays and not playing past the first series of the second quarter against New York.

After faking a throw and stumbling when he tried to change directions, Cassel threw blindly to a spot where Darrelle Revis was by himself for an easy interception.

Cassel came out the series after taking a 19-yard sack, which wasn’t long after he left the field to loud boos following a three-and-out. He finished 3 of 8 for 37 yards with the pick.

“Didn’t seem like we were able to get in a rhythm,” coach Jason Garrett said. “At that time wanted to give Kellen a chance to see if he could jump start the offense.”

Moore went 15 of 25 for 158 yards with the 10-yard touchdown to Bryant to put the Cowboys up 10-9 at halftime. The lefty also had three interceptions ending his first series, another picked off in the end zone midway through the third quarter after driving to the Jets 6, and then a desperate deep heave in the closing seconds.

Garrett said he wasn’t ready to talk about whether Moore or Cassel would start next week at Buffalo.

“It was not an easy situation just because I’ve been here to support Matt in any way and help him,” Moore said. “I felt good. I felt like communication was pretty good. ... We’ll see what happens. Obviously, I took this opportunity for what it was. We’ll grow from it and learn from it and see what happens.”

Tony Romo started only four games this season, the first two games in September before breaking his collarbone, and then two games after his return before suffering the same injury.

Brandon Weeden lost his only three starts before being replaced by midseason acquisition Cassel. Moore, the former Boise State quarterback, was moved from practice squad to active roster after Romo got hurt again Thanksgiving Day against Carolina.

Browns McCown Passes Concussion

Browns quarterback Josh McCown will start ahead of Johnny Manziel this Sunday against Oakland after passing the NFL’s protocol on concussions.

McCown was injured in the season opener against the New York Jets and had to sit out last week because of lingering symptoms from his head injury. Manziel replaced him and led the Browns to a 28-14 victory over Tennessee, his first career win.

Manziel threw two long to touchdown passes but also had two fumbles, giving him four in two games.

McCown completed 5 of 8 passes for 49 yards before getting hurt when he tried to launch himself into the end zone on a scramble and was struck in the helmet.

On Monday, Pettine hinted toward going back to the 36-year-old McCown, who was cleared by an independent neurologist Wednesday and will practice. Pettine said he would start the QB who gives his team the best chance to win.
