Maroons Emerging Duo Breach Curfew

Another alcohol-inflicted hangover looms for the NRL, with Cronulla’s Valentine Holmes identified as the player at the centre of an Emerging Origin squad controversy that might embroil up to six Queensland hopefuls.

Queensland Rugby League boss Peter Betros told AAP two players – later identified as Holmes and Melbourne’s Cameron Munster – would be blacklisted by Maroons’ selectors for a year for breaching curfew at the weekend camp in Brisbane.

However, up to six players who attended the camp were being investigated by the QRL after reports several broke curfew and Holmes was involved in a Fortitude Valley incident with police.

Days after Mitchell Pearce apologised for his Australia Day bender, the NRL integrity unit is investigating Holmes after the QRL and Cronulla had each issued a statement on Monday, identifying him as the player involved in “an alleged incident”.

It is believed the camp’s 20-strong squad were told not to go out after returning from a team dinner on Saturday night. However, up to six players later left for the Fortitude Valley nightclub precinct with Holmes allegedly involved in the incident with police.

New Queensland coach Kevin Walters had rammed home what had been expected from his Origin players just hours earlier at the camp – his first in charge of the Maroons.

“Our club has been made aware of an alleged incident involving Valentine Holmes amongst other players during a Queensland Emerging Origin training camp last weekend,” a Cronulla statement said. “We are conducting our own inquiries into this matter in addition to assisting the QRL with their investigation.”

QRL managing director Robert Moore confirmed Holmes and Munster were the banned players.

“Cronulla Sharks player Valentine Holmes broke curfew during the Emerging Origin camp and is subject to further investigation by the QRL and NRL integrity unit,” Moore said. “Melbourne Storm player Cameron Munster has been excluded solely for breaking curfew.”

Moore did not rule out bans against more players “if they were identified as breaking curfew”.

Walters was furious. “On Saturday afternoon, we sat down as a group and spoke about the importance of making the right choices,” he said in a QRL statement. “Regrettably, there were some players who made poor choices after we had wrapped up the official part of that day’s program.”

Betros said it was the worst possible first impression Holmes and Munster could have made with Walters. “The Queensland Rugby League won’t be selecting them for anything for 12 months,” Betros told AAP on Monday.

“It’s a massive setback for those players. It’s the only way they will learn. Kevin is very disappointed in them. He is strong on discipline. He feels those players don’t want to buy into what he is doing with Queensland. They can go back to club land.”

Newcastle’s Dane Gagai was also banned for 12 months for skipping a training session at the 2014 Emerging Origin camp. He had to wait until game three last year to make his Origin debut for Queensland.

Crowe Apology for Keary Outburst

Russell Crowe has apologised for berating five-eighth Luke Keary during a South Sydney team bonding session last month.

Crowe took to social media to say sorry after Seven News reported Keary had stormed out of the session at the Oscar-winning actor’s property at Coffs Harbour after being chided for his performance in 2015.

It is believed the entire team was criticised for their performances last season by Crowe, but Keary had been singled out after the boozy session.

“Luke Keary situation entirely my fault,” Crowe tweeted on Wednesday. “A bit of banter that went too far. I’ve apologised. He is a natural leader and great for our club.”

Keary, 23, played 24 matches for Souths last season, scoring four tries.

He is off contract at the end of the season and has reportedly attracted interest from other clubs.

Rabbitohs Confirm Burgess Comeback

Returning South Sydney star Sam Burgess will mark his NRL comeback by lining up to floor club captain Greg Inglis. The Rabbitohs confirmed Burgess’ new contract was ratified by the governing body late on Saturday night, paving the way for his anticipated return to the 13-man code.

“The Rabbitohs are pleased to inform members that Sam Burgess’ contract has been registered by the NRL this week,” the club said in a statement. “Sam will play in the red and green of the Rabbitohs until at least the end of the 2018 season.”

For the first time since agreeing to terms with the club last month, the 27-year-old joined his old teammates in a training camp at Coffs Harbour this week. However his first outing won’t be in the famed cardinal and myrtle. The 2014 Clive Churchill medallist will instead be in a World All Stars strip when they take on the Indigenous All Stars at Suncorp Stadium in February.

On the other side of the pitch will be clubmates Inglis, Alex Johnston and Chris Grevsmuhl. Burgess’s brother Tom was picked on the bench by World All Stars coach Wayne Bennett. Fellow Englishman James Graham, who is slated to start alongside Sam, welcomed his countryman back to rugby league with open arms and predicted a quick return to form.

“It’s only been 12 months out of the game, I can’t see why too much would have changed,” Graham said last week. “I caught up with him a few times back in England and am delighted to have him back in the game to be honest. The year he left we lost three of the best five players in the game at the time so to get at least one of those back is great. He’s a superstar, he puts bums on seats and makes people tune in.”

The Rabbitohs also confirmed the re-signing of promising youngster Angus Crichton until the end of 2018, as well as the recruitment of Melbourne centre Hymel Hunt on a one-year deal. South Sydney’s pre-season schedule includes games against St George Illawarra, Northern Pride and a World Club Challenge against St Helens.

Their opening game of the 2016 season is against arch rivals Sydney Roosters on March 6.

Meninga Named Kangaroos Coach

Mal Meninga has been named coach of the Australian rugby league team. He takes over from long-serving Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens on a four-year deal, which runs until the end of 2019.

“For the players, it is the ultimate privilege to the wear the colours of your country, and it is something that they all aspire to,” Meninga said. “For me, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do. It is truly an honour to be in this position, as the new coach of the Kangaroos.”

Meninga’s appointment was also made with the support of current Queensland and Australian captain Cameron Smith.

“I couldn’t think of a coach more suited to this role, given Mal’s achievements as a former Kangaroos captain and his understanding of what representing Australia means,” Smith said.

“He has a proven record at representative level, as well as a tremendous ability to help his players perform at the highest level.”

NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said the appointment was the first move towards winning the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The announcement was made at Rugby League Central in Moore Park on Thursday and brings an end to Meninga’s record-breaking reign as Queensland coach with long-time Kevin Walters expected to be named Maroons mentor.

Burgess Sydney Return Against Roosters

Sam Burgess’s return to South Sydney and the NRL will kick off against arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters in front of a potential sell-out Sunday afternoon crowd at Allianz Stadium on 6 March.

In an effort to boost crowd numbers the NRL has announced a number of big Sunday afternoon games in Sydney, scheduled for the family-friendly 4pm timeslot.

“We have certainly made an effort to ensure that some of our best match-ups and blockbusters are in family-friendly timeslots,” the NRL’s head of football Todd Greenberg said.

“Whilst I don’t want to give too much away, we will have a number of strong Sydney derbies on Sundays through the opening rounds of the Telstra Premiership.”

The NRL will release the draw for the 2016 season this week, however the governing body has already confirmed a number of Sunday blockbusters for the 4pm timeslot.

The southern derby of the Sharks and Dragons will headline the second round in the harbour city, while the Dragons will take Souths to the SCG in round three and host Penrith in round four. The battle of the west will play out as Parramatta host Penrith in round five.

Crowd figures dropped to an average of 15,074 last season, their lowest figure since 2004. On average, they dropped more than 800 fans per match on 2014, and were almost 1,500 fans down than in 2005 on average.

Sydney clubs particularly struggled, with the Wests Tigers, Manly, Penrith and Cronulla all failing to average above 12,000 people per match.

Elsewhere, the Eels will reportedly host Brisbane in the first Thursday night match of the season, while the Cowboys look set to begin their premiership defence on a Saturday night to appease their regional supporter base.

Penrith Panthers Name Griffin

Penrith have announced Anthony Griffin as their new coach from the 2016 season. The former Brisbane coach has signed a three-year deal and takes over from Ivan Cleary who was dumped by the Panthers this week with one year remaining on his contract.

“I’m very honoured to be in this position and very humbled to be the coach of a great club in the Penrith Panthers,” Griffin said. “I’ve got a basic knowledge of western Sydney. It’s a massive area and I know it needs a successful NRL team.”

Cleary was sensationally sacked by Panthers supremo Phil Gould on Monday. The former State of Origin mentor said he believed Cleary needed a break from coaching.

“Understand that we did not advertise this position. We did not accept applications and we interviewed no other candidate. We are delighted he has accepted our invitation to be the new head coach at out our club,” Gould said.

Griffin spent four years at Red Hill and was moved aside ahead of the 2015 season to make way for returning supercoach Wayne Bennett.

Cleary spent four seasons at the foot of the mountains after leaving the Warriors following their 2011 grand final loss to Manly.

He was brought to Penrith with much fanfare by Gould and led the Panthers to the preliminary final in 2014. This year, however, the Panthers only narrowly avoided the wooden spoon courtesy of a final-round win over last-placed Newcastle.

Canberra Raiders Poor Home Record

Canberra posted a 34-18 NRL win over Penrith to round out an otherwise disappointing NRL home season.

The 13th-placed Raiders had endured their worst home record since entering the competition in 1982, with the victory over the 15th placed Panthers just their third at Canberra Stadium in 2015.

Jack Wighton, Josh Hodgson, Sam Williams, Blake Austin, and David Shillington were the best for the home side, with Shillington playing in his last game at Canberra Stadium before joining Gold Coast in 2016.

It was a bittersweet night for Austin, however, after he was forced off in the 50th minute with an injury to his right shoulder. The Raiders announced before the match that Austin had penned a new deal with the club through until 2018.

Second half tries to Kurt Baptiste and Sisa Waqa confirmed the final scoreline, with Canberra captain Jarrod Croker kicking five from six.

Centre Mitch Lewis and fullback Will Smith scored second half tries for Penrith, while halfback Jamie Soward played no part in the game after halftime following a hit in a heavy tackle just before the break.

Canberra fullback Wighton was lucky not to be placed on report for the incident, replays inconclusive about whether contact with the head had been made.

Halfback Williams opened the scoring in the seventh minute, when he strolled through some very flimsy Penrith defence.

Canberra enjoyed the bulk of possession in the first half, with captain Croker and backrowers Jarrad Kennedy and Shaun Fensom scoring tries.

Penrith finally got on the board just before half-time, when hooker James Segeyaro burst through some soft Canberra defence to score under the posts.
