Pick Lions in Best Form - John Bentley

and

Former British & Irish Lions international John Bentley believes reputation should count for nothing when coach Warren Gatland picks his squad for next summer's tour to Australia.

Bentley, a key member of the last Lions squad to claim a series victory over South Africa in 1997, is confident that the elite tourists can repeat that feat against the Wallabies if Gatland gets his selection right.

"Warren Gatland has been proven in the last four years as being a great coach with Wales and he has got the best out of his players, so he is the best man for the job," said Bentley, who started the second and third Tests in 1997.

"The important thing about selecting the Lions squad initially is selecting players who are in form at the time, reputation will count for nothing. He has to pick those who are playing well.

"The Lions comes along only once every four years and they only go to three countries and it will be a great challenge going to Australia. But of the three countries - Australia, South Africa and New Zealand - it's probably the best one to go to to seek that elusive win.

"The important thing is to try and get them to be a team as quickly as possible. In 1997 we became a side, a team, and importantly it doesn't want to be a midweek team and a Saturday team. Ultimately everyone wants to play on a Saturday because that is when the Tests are played."

Gatland Set for Lions Coach Role

Warren Gatland has revealed he is "very close" to agreeing a deal to become coach of the British and Irish Lions for the tour of Australia next year.

The tour will take place from June 1 to July 6, forcing Gatland, who is currently in New Zealand recuperating from a fall, to set aside Six Nations duties with Wales next year.

"We still haven't signed anything yet but it's very close, and if I do take the position I'll be seconded to the Lions for 10 months," he said.

Gatland, who guided Wales to a Six Nations Grand Slam this year, will return to Britain on Sunday and an announcement on the Lions' coaching role is expected to be made on September 4.

The Lions, featuring the best players from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, visit Australia once every 12 years, with the Wallabies winning the last series Down Under in 2001.

The 10-match 2013 tour begins with a clash against the Barbarians in Hong Kong, before moving to Australia, where there will be Tests against the Wallabies in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Gatland is relishing the opportunity to participate in an "old-style tour", which includes matches against provincial teams as well as high-profile Tests.

"It's a great chance to mould players from four different countries together in such a short period," he said. "I think we get them for about a week before we go on tour, and it's a great experience. It's difficult to do.

David Wallace Announces Retirement

Ireland and Munster backrow David Wallace has retired from rugby at the age of 35, after failing to recover fully from the knee injury he sustained prior to the 2011 World Cup.

The Corkman was capped 203 times for his province from August 1997 and 72 times for Ireland since debuting in 2000. Wallace, whose brothers Paul and Richard also lined out for their country, was named on the ERC European Dream Team (1995 - 2010) along with Ronan O'Gara and Anthony Foley, and was twice a British & Irish Lion (2001 & 2009).

He also won a Grand Slam with Ireland in 2009.

“Although it's disappointing that injury is forcing me to retire now,” he said, “I take great comfort that I've had an unbelievably enjoyable career and I feel very lucky to have been involved in an era that has seen Munster and Ireland enjoy so much success.

"Professional rugby has exploded in popularity and changed beyond all recognition in this country since I began and I feel honoured to have played witness to it's massive improvement.

“I'd like to thank anyone who has helped me and had faith in me during my 15-year professional career including family, teammates, coaches, medics, friends and not least supporters.

“I will be looking to step away from rugby and explore a few different business opportunities, while also looking forward to being able to spend more time with my wife Aileen and sons Andrew and Harvey."

2013 Lions Tour Itinerary Announced

British & Irish Lions Manager, Andy Irvine, has revealed the 10-match tour schedule for the highly anticipated tour to Australia in 2013.

The British & Irish Lions and the Australian Rugby Union have agreed a programme of nine matches for the Tour in Australia, including three Test matches. The Lions will also play an historic match in Hong Kong against the famous Barbarians Club on their way to Australia.

Commenting on the Lions 2013 schedule, Tour Manager Andy Irvine said, “The announcement of the 2013 tour schedule represents another milestone in the rich history of the British & Irish Lions. Since 1888 when the Lions embarked on their first ever tour, which happened to be Australia, the famous red shirt has become an aspirational symbol of achievement for players in Britain and Ireland.”

“The Lions receive numerous requests to play matches around the world outside of the traditional tour destinations of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For 2013 we had the perfect opportunity to play a match in the developing rugby region of Asia, while at the same time break the long journey from Europe to Australia. As has become customary we also wanted 10 matches to maximise the essential pre-Test series build up.”

“The last Lions tour to Australia in 2001 heralded the dawn of 'The Red Army' with tens of thousands of English, Irish, Scottish & Welsh tourists and ex-pats wearing the red jersey in support of the Lions. We look forward to another challenging tour to one of the world's most beautiful countries,” added Irvine.

The Wallabies finished third at the recent Rugby World Cup and are currently ranked second in the world. The six week tour will include the match against the Barbarians in Hong Kong, matches against all five Australian Super Rugby teams, a match against New South Wales Country and three Test matches against the Qantas Wallabies in Brisbane (June 22), Melbourne (June 29) and the final test in Sydney (July 6).

British & Irish Lions Chairman, Gerald Davies, said, “With the latest Rugby World Cup tournament completed a major focus for the rugby world is now the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia in 2013. Lions tours are hugely popular and outside of Rugby World Cup represent one of the game’s major show pieces with global media coverage and ticket sales testament to their popularity.”

“It has to be said that the last two series between the Wallabies and the British & Irish Lions have been memorable. In 1989 and 2001 both three-Test series went down to the last match. Of course the Lions were victorious in the series in 1989 but the Wallabies had their revenge in 2001. I am sure that the 2013 series will be just as competitive with the tour reigniting the fierce but respectful rivalry that exists between the two sides.”

The last tour by the Lions to Australia was in 2001, when the Lions played 10 matches including three Tests. They won seven matches, including the First Test against the Wallabies, and lost three. These defeats were against Australia A and the Wallabies in the Second and Third Tests. The vital Third Test was won by the Wallabies 16–13 at Stadium Australia, Sydney, in front of a crowd of 84,188 to clinch the series.

Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship, HSBC Holdings plc said, “Today marks the beginning of another exciting journey for HSBC, our staff and customers, as we build towards the British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia. The Lions resonates particularly well with HSBC’s target audience, and this sponsorship enables us to engage with four of our key markets in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia.
