Warrior Green Claims 82 Games Too Much

After the Warriors’ quest for a record-setting 73 wins was dealt an unexpected setback against the Timberwolves on Tuesday night, Draymond Green admitted his team had become “bored” by the slog of the NBA regular-season – and were ready for the season to end.

“Talking 82 games, we get bored with that after a while,” Green said.

The Warriors let slip a 17-point lead and lost 124-117 in overtime, meaning the NBA’s best team must sweep their four remaining games to surpass the 1995-96 Bulls’ mark of 72 wins on the season.

Asked whether the Warriors had gotten caught up in the hype of eclipsing Michael Jordan and the Bulls, Green responded: “Honestly? Yes.”

Then he corrected himself. “I wouldn’t necessarily say caught up in the hype.”

Green gave an honest assessment after the Warriors’ second home loss in the past five nights. Their record 54-game home winning streak was snapped Friday by Boston, and Green acknowledged that a long season had taken its toll.

“It’s human nature to where [we’re], all right, kind of ready for the regular season to end,” Green said. “Talking 82 games, we get bored with that after a while. And that’s no excuse, just, I’m always give it to y’all real, and that’s about as real as I can be. It’s kind of at a point now where you’re ready for the regular season to be over.

“Focus was the number one thing,” Green said. “We lost our focus and when you lose your focus, that’s when turnovers happen. That’s when problems happen.”

Coach Steve Kerr watched his team commit 24 turnovers and witnessed an off-night for Steph Curry, who missed 18 of 25 shots. Kerr, who was part of that record-setting Bulls team in the 1990s, said he knows what his team are going through.

“You have so much media attention and everybody talking about breaking the record and you lose focus a little bit,” Kerr said. “The same thing happened 20 years ago. We didn’t play well down the stretch. This doesn’t surprise me. It’s easy to get lost in all this stuff. We haven’t been very dialed in of late.”

Curry insisted, however, that the record of 73 was not beyond them. “We put ourselves in a position where it’s a realistic goal,” he said. “We have to embrace the challenge. Obviously it’s not easy to get it done. We’re proving that right now.”

MVP Curry Strikes Again with Thunder

Stephen Curry’s 3-pointer from beyond 30 feet with 0.6 seconds left in overtime gave the Golden State Warriors a 121-118 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.

Curry finished with 46 points as his winning shot was his 12th 3-pointer, tying the NBA single-game record. He also broke his own NBA record for 3s in a season, leaving the new mark at 288.

Curry, the league’s scoring leader and reigning MVP, missed about six minutes of the third quarter with a left ankle injury. He drove to the basket and rolled the ankle before Thunder guard Russell Westbrook stepped on it.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 37 points, but he fouled out in the first minute of overtime.

The Warriors won the previous meeting with the Thunder 116-108 at home on 6 February. The teams play again Thursday at Golden State.

Oklahoma City led by 12 in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors rallied. Klay Thompson made a 3 from the left corner to cut Oklahoma City’s lead to 100-99. It was the first 3 of the game for any Warriors player other than Curry.

Durant responded with a 3-pointer with 14.5 seconds left to put the Thunder up 103-99.

Thompson quickly scored a layup, then the Thunder turned the ball over, and Andre Iguodala was fouled with 0.7 seconds left. Iguodala made both free throws to tie the score at 103 and force the extra period.

Nash and Sarver Buy into Mallorca


Former NBA star Steve Nash has officially become a majority stakeholder in Spanish second-division club Real Club Deportivo Mallorca. 

According to the club, the Canadian former point guard has partnered up with Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver to purchase 20 million euros (21 million dollars) of RCD Mallorca shares. In doing so, Nash and Sarver have replaced the German group led by Utz Claassen as the club's majority shareholders. 

Claassen, who had been a 98% shareholder, has reduced his stake in the club to 22% but will initially stay on as its president, a role he has held since the end of 2014.

With investment and share capital worth more than 26 million euros, RCD Mallorca are the undisputed financial heavyweights in the second tier of Spanish football, although things are not going so well out on the pitch. 

The team currently lie 18th in the table and are fighting to avoid relegation to the third division (Segunda B).

Green Day at Golden State


Soon after Draymond Green posted his NBA-leading fifth triple-double he was asked whether Stephen Curry should worry that he was trying to steal his job as point guard while the NBA MVP is out with a leg injury.

“I don’t think Steph Curry got to worry about too much of nothing,” Green said, laughing.

Klay Thompson scored 38 points, Green had a career-high 16 assists and added 10 points and 11 rebounds and the Golden State Warriors overcame Curry’s absence to beat the Houston Rockets 114-110 on Thursday night.

“I just tried to step up and make plays,” Green said. “One thing we talked about was kind of trying to slow the pace of the game down and executing our offense.”

Golden State was blown out by Dallas on Wednesday night for just its second loss of the season when Curry missed his first game since March 13 because of a sore left lower leg. But the Warriors were able to outlast the Rockets thanks to the big night by Thompson, who made six 3s.

“Last night was embarrassing,” Thompson said. “We had every excuse in the world, but we didn’t want to come away 0-2 so we figured out this would be a much bigger statement win if we responded like we did and won with playing 10 guys.”

Houston cut it to three with a jump shot by James Harden with about 5 minutes left before Golden State scored the next six points, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk from Andre Iguodalato Bogut, to make it 111-102.

Harden had 30 points for the Rockets. They have dropped seven straight regular-season games to the Warriors.

Shaun Livingston made his second start of the season in place of Curry, who was injured Monday night against Sacramento, and finished with 13 points. Interim coach Luke Walton said Curry was feeling better Thursday, but that he was not ready to play.

The Warriors led by eight entering the fourth quarter and had scored four straight points to extend their lead to 99-87 with about 9 minutes remaining. Houston used a 13-5 run after that to cut the lead to 104-100 with about 6 minutes left.

Houston led by three points with about 3 minutes left in the third quarter when Golden State scored 10 straight points to take a 88-80 lead with less than a minute left in the quarter. Thompson scored five points in that span and Iguodala added a 3-pointer before James Michael McAdoo capped it with a dunk following a turnover by Ty Lawson.

“We’re just inconsistent,” Harden said. “We played a pretty good game up until the end of the third quarter when they went on that run. Just giving up small buckets like that to a really good team (is) something you couldn’t really do.”

Knicks Early Suffers Gunshot in Uber Car


New York Knicks small forward Cleanthony Early was held up at gunpoint and shot in the right leg during an early-morning attack in Queens on Wednesday.

Early, 24, who had played 29 seconds in the Knicks’ 108-96 victory over the Pistons earlier that night, was shot in his right leg while travelling in an Uber car, detectives said. The attack took place at about 4am after Early left a strip club in the Maspeth neighborhood of Queens.

According to the New York Daily News, Early, 24, was surrounded by four to six people wearing ski masks and robbed of his items and jewelry – including a gold necklace and gold caps on his teeth, sources said. Early was taken to Elmhurst hospital in stable condition, and was later being transported to another hospital. His injury does not appear to be life-threatening.

“We are aware of what occurred with Cleanthony Early this morning and are relieved that he is not in a life-threatening situation,” the Knicks said in a statement. “We ill not comment any further until we receive more information.”

Early, who grew up in the Bronx, is in his second season with the Knicks. He was drafted in 2014 after attending Wichita State.

The theft comes about 10 days after Knicks forward Derrick Williams was robbed of $617,000 in jewelry from his home. He had taken home two women from a Manhattan club. Police are still looking for suspects.

Williams has declined to comment on the theft, but the case raised questions about whether NBA players should have a curfew like other professional sports. In April, Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland, his girlfriend and another woman were stabbed following a late-night argument on the street near a Manhattan nightclub.

Knicks coach Derek Fisher was asked about the policy at a news conference after Williams was robbed.

“I don’t really have to get into our policies of what you can and can’t do,” he told reporters last week. “We don’t have a curfew like in the NFL or other sports do on certain nights. It’s an unfortunate incident.”
