Mourinho in Mexico City

José Mourinho is certain he will be managing a club within two months and says he will sign a new contract by 30 June.

The 53-year-old Portuguese has been strongly linked with the Manchester United job but speaking from Mexico, he claimed to “know nothing” about a move to Old Trafford to replace Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho, who was fired as Chelsea manager in December, was back in the dugout on Wednesday in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City to coach a Fifa Legends team, featuring Ronaldinho and Fabio Cannavaro, against a Mexican All-stars side.

Managing a team again, albeit for an exhibition before the Fifa Congress, had whetted Mourinho’s appetite for a return to coaching. “Of course I miss it,” Mourinho said. “In July I will be back. So we are in May. May to July is nothing. I keep enjoying my life which I’m doing, keep enjoying my family. But in July I am back.”

Asked when he needed to sign a contract by, the London-based Mourinho responded: “June 30 – that’s fine.”

Manchester United have not denied months of reports that Van Gaal will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season and be replaced by Mourinho, who coached Real Madrid, Internazional and Porto around his two stints at Chelsea.

Van Gaal’s United future looks bleaker with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League now out of the team’s hands. To qualify for the Champions League, United need to beat Bournemouth and rely on Manchester City losing to Swansea on the final day of the season on Sunday.

“I don’t know. I know nothing about it really,” Mourinho said, when asked about being hired by United. “I don’t have a club and I was waiting for these guys [the Fifa Legends] to win the match to give me a hand but because I lost the match [9-8] it’s even more difficult to get the club.”

The United director David Gill is also in Mexico City in his capacity as a Fifa vice-president. If Mourinho does resume employment in July he will not have officially been involved in planning for the club’s season.

“It’s difficult because when you get a new club in this period normally the clubs they did already their work,” Mourinho said. “I give you an example. I’m not the Chelsea manager but I organised the Chelsea pre-season in many aspects because I did that 10 months ago.

“Clubs have their commercial, marketing departments always involved in everything. When a new manager arrives in May, June it’s very difficult to touch in some points but we know that.”

But Mourinho said a late appointment would not affect his ability to identify and sign transfer targets before the start of the new season in August.

“Scouting is done during the year,” Mourinho said. “It’s not even a competition like the Euros where you are going to find by miracle some new talents. We know everybody, so it’s just a question of trying to choose the players that your team needs because the scouting, with our structures, we do it for many, many players.”

Carneiro Calls for Mourinho Public Apology

Eva Carneiro has called on José Mourinho to make a public apology to the former Chelsea team doctor as part of a settlement in her employment case.

Carneiro is claiming constructive dismissal against Chelsea and has a separate personal legal action against the former manager Mourinho, who left the club in December, for alleged victimisation and discrimination.

She arrived for a private employment tribunal in Croydon on Monday along with her legal team and her husband, the polar explorer Jason De Carteret.

Her barrister, Mary O’Rourke QC, told ITV News: “We’re not expecting a resolution today. The two sides are so far apart financially. And we want Mr Mourinho to make a public apology.” ITV said Carneiro was claiming “substantial damages”.

She was criticised by Mourinho and dropped from first-team duties following the draw with Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League season last August.

Any settlement proposed by the judge must be agreeable to Carneiro, Chelsea and Mourinho, otherwise the case would be scheduled to proceed to an employment tribunal which would be heard in public on 6 June.

Witness statements and documents, including texts and emails, are likely to be made public, while Carneiro, Mourinho and representatives from Chelsea could be called to appear as witnesses.

That could be difficult for Mourinho, who is keen to return to management and has been linked with a move to Manchester United, with Louis van Gaal’s position under scrutiny.

However, there is also the prospect that Chelsea, who have refused to comment on the proceedings, and Mourinho could settle the case at any time. Carneiro in January appeared at a tribunal hearing for three hours, but no settlement was reached.

The 42-year-old doctor was dropped from first-team duties after then-Chelsea manager Mourinho criticised her and the first-team physio Jon Fearn for going on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard on the opening day of the season.

The action meant that Chelsea were temporarily down to nine men against Swansea, and afterwards Mourinho called Carneiro and Fearn “impulsive and naive”.

Carneiro did not appear on the bench again for first-team duties and later parted company with the club.

Mourinho was cleared of using discriminatory language towards Carneiro following an investigation by the Football Association.

Fantastic Manager - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has told his critics to remember he is "a fantastic manager" - even when Chelsea are losing.

The Blues boss admitted he had forgotten what it felt like to win until his side beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

The comprehensive victory was just a second this season for the English champions, who are already 11 points off Manchester City's Premier League pace.

But Mourinho fiercely defended his managerial record in the run-up to the Maccabi game, and afterwards he warned critics against what he claims is kneejerk analysis.

"There are people who are not happy with so many successes," said Mourinho, who again denied any breakdown in his relationship with captain John Terry who was one of several high profile players dropped to the bench for the game.

"Wayne Rooney was a disaster, then he beats the record with England and he's suddenly the best player in the history of English football. Rooney is a fantastic player when he's not scoring goals or when he is.

"I am a fantastic manager when I'm not winning matches and I'm a fantastic manager when I am.

"You like 'up and down', but it's not like that. The pundits get big money not to say easy things. They have to be geniuses in their analysis or they don't deserve the money they get."

Cesc Fabregas scored Chelsea's fourth goal against Maccabi and will be up against old side Arsenal on Saturday

Mourinho welcomed the vocal support of the home fans during the Maccabi game, saying: "It shows that they don't read papers or they don't have short memories: if they don't read papers they'll support me, if they don't have short memories they'll support me.

"There's an easy way for them to think, which is: 'we won four premier Leagues, three with him and one with his team, so this guy is not bad. let's support him, and we have a chance to win a fifth'."

Next up for Mourinho is a meeting with Arsenal and old adversary Arsene Wenger, who recorded a first win over the Portuguese in last month's Community Shield.

He said: "For all of us to have woken up again after a defeat and two days before a London derby against Arsenal, I could imagine how it would feel."
