Dettori Prix Win on Golden Horn

Epsom Derby winner Golden Horn, ridden by Frankie Dettori, denied French mare Treve an historic third Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with victory at Longchamp.

Dettori, winning the race for the fourth time, pulled Golden Horn wide early in the race before slotting in behind the leader.

They were well positioned before moving clear of Flintshire and New Bay, who finished second and third respectively.

Treve finished fast but had to be content with fourth.

"I really believed in the horse," said Dettori. "I was going so fast in the last 300 metres I knew no other horse would pass me.

"I had the best horse and I wanted to show how good he is. His record is unbelievable and he is probably the best horse I have ridden."

Golden Horn had already enjoyed a superb season with wins in the Derby, Dante Stakes and Coral-Eclipse - and bounced back from a shock defeat in the Juddmonte International to claim the Irish Champion Stakes.

The money earned for those victories meant the 120,000 euros (£88,600) owner Anthony Oppenheimer spent to add the John Gosden-trained horse to the field for the world's richest turf race was a relatively small price to pay.

Harrington Bids for Oaks Win

Jessica Harrington will bid to become the first female trainer to win the Oaks at Epsom on Friday with Jack Naylor among 11 fillies in the Classic.

Fran Berry rides the horse, whose odds have halved in price during the build-up from about 14-1 to 7-1.

Jockey Ryan Moore will hope for more success on Legatissimo afterwinning the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May.

Trainer John Gosden has declared Star of Seville and Jazzi Top having saddled Taghrooda to victory 12 months ago.

Jack Naylor finished a promising fourth in last month's Irish 1,000 Guineas and Harrington said: "I thought the Guineas would bring her on and it looks like it has.

"You never know with fillies, it just depends how good they are on the day, but we've beaten a couple of the others before and we're looking forward to it."

Aidan O'Brien, a four-time winner, has three chances of success - Together Forever, Diamondsandrubies and Qualify.

Friday is the first day of the two-day Derby meeting and the Oaks, over a mile-and-a-half, also features Crystal Zvezda, Lady Of Dubai, Al Naamah and Bellajeu.

On Saturday, the 236th staging of the Derby, flat racing's premier Classic, sees jockey Frankie Dettori in line-up for the first time since 2010 on favourite Golden Horn.

Banned Dettori Still Determined

Getty Images
Frankie Dettori is determined to rebuild his reputation in 2013 once his six-month suspension for a failed drugs test has been served, his legal spokesman has said.

The Italian's ban will run from November 20 to May 19, meaning that he could theoretically return to action in time to ride in the Derby and Oaks at Epsom at the start of June and the Royal Ascot meeting soon afterwards, provided that he passes a medical examination at France Galop.

His representative Christopher Stewart-Moore said: "He is enormously grateful for the opportunities that he has been given by owners and trainers over the years, and for the support of his many fans.

"Racing has been good to Frankie and he knows that his privileged position brings with it responsibility.

"For this reason he is determined to rebuild his reputation when he returns to the saddle.

"Frankie could make excuses. He has, after all, regularly been tested for prohibited substances throughout his career.

"He is clear, however, that the responsibility for his current situation lies squarely with him.

"From the start of France Galop's inquiry he has acknowledged to them he has made a mistake and that the fault was his. Finally, he has asked me to thank everyone for the many messages of support he and his family have received."

Dettori Suspended in France

Getty Images
The French racing authorities have suspended jockey Frankie Dettori 'on medical grounds' pending a disciplinary hearing into his failed drugs test.

The positive test for an unspecified illegal substance was considered by a Medical Commission on Tuesday.

A hearing is expected in two weeks with Dettori, 41, facing the possibility of a worldwide ban.

The suspension makes little difference to Dettori as he would not expect to ride in France at this time of year.

Dettori was not present as France Galop's medical committee considered his case on Tuesday but he answered questions via a conference call.

Dettori tested positive at Longchamp racecourse on 16 September for a substance which his lawyer has said is not "performance enhancing."

The options open to France Galop, which is unlikely to name the substance involved, range from dropping the case to imposing a six-month ban. Any suspension would apply worldwide.

Dettori gave a positive test at a Sunday meeting which was a day of major trials for October's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting.

The British-based Italian rider had four rides at Longchamp on that day.

Dettori rode Marco Botti's Joshua Tree to third in the Qatar Prix Foy, while the John Hammond-trained Sarah Lynx trailed home last in the Prix Vermeille.

He was then beaten by a head into second on the Godolphin-trained Farhh in the Prix du Moulin and was third for his former employers on Willing Foe in the Prix Gladiateur.

France Galop, the rulers of French racing, said two urine and three breath tests were carried out on 16 September.

Spokesman Julien Pescatore, said: "Frankie Dettori was not targeted. On average we test around five jockeys a day, and on big days we test 15.

"There are 700-900 tests on jockeys carried out each year.

"It is random, but every jockey can expect to be tested at least once a year."

Dettori Faces France Galop

Jockey Frankie Dettori is set to face a French horse racing inquiry on Tuesday after testing positive for a banned substance in September.

Dettori, 41, is due to appear before the medical committee of France Galop.

He tested positive at Longchamp racecourse on 16 September for a substance which his solicitor has said is not "performance enhancing" .

A separate stewards' committee meeting may be held later, and it is not clear when any verdict will be known.

Dettori could face a ban of several months if he is found to have breached the rules. Any suspension would apply worldwide.

He gave a positive test at a Sunday meeting which was a day of major trials for October's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting.

The British-based Italian jockey had four rides at Longchamp on that day.

France Galop, the rulers of French racing, have not commented on proceedings and in keeping with similar previous cases, they have not issued a statement before the hearing.

Last month, three-time champion jockey Dettori announced he was to split with Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation after an 18-year association and go freelance from 2013.

Dettori, who rode all seven winners on the card at Ascot in September 1996, has won 14 British Classics, including the Epsom Derby on Authorized in 2007.

He is also a three-time winner of France's prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, on Lammtarra in 1995, Sakhee in 2001 and Marienbard the following year.

Dettori Flies Stakes on Snow Fairy

Getty Images
Snow Fairy gained a dazzling success over Nathaniel in the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Ed Dunlop’s globe-trotting mare settled nicely for Frankie Dettori and always looked to have Nathaniel covered as he was driven to overhaul pacemaker Daddy Long Legs rounding the bend.

Nathaniel (13-8 favourite) was in front and kicked on entering the straight, but Snow Fairy (15-8) quickened smoothly to take closer order and was always on top as the line approached. St Nicholas Abbey ran a gallant race as he tried to close in third.

Dettori, who had made the dash to the Dublin track in a helicopter from Haydock with Nathaniel’s jockey William Buick, was deputising on Snow Fairy for the injured Ryan Moore.

He had also ridden Snow Fairy 12 months ago when Dunlop’s star found only So You Think too good.

The Italian’s delight was clear as he performed his famous flying dismount, much to the delight of the crowds surrounding the winner’s enclosure.

Snow Fairy had only recently returned from a serious leg injury when winning the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville, and was taking her Group One haul to a magnificent seven.

Dettori, winning his fifth Irish Champion, said: “Usually I don’t notice these things, but I could hear the crowd really get behind her and the roar when she crossed the line.

“The crowd at Leopardstown are fantastic. I’ve had some great days here. It’s all about the filly, she’s so popular. Everyone was delighted to see her win like that in a fighting finish. She got a tremendous cheer.

“She’s a popular as Kauto Star over jumps and for racing we need superstars like that. She’s small but she comes with a big punch!

“All the credit goes to Ed and the team for bringing her back after her serious injury, this race has been won by some great champions and she is one of them.

“It has been an honour to be on her again. Ryan said be patient and she’ll quicken when you ask her. Ryan has been a gentleman, a great help.”

Dunlop said: “I’ve lost my voice. I’m relieved for the horse more than anything, the owner and for Frankie who’s obviously now won on her.

“Ryan Moore has won six out of six on her, so Frankie needed that. This filly is simply unbelievable.”

Asked where the win stood among his career achievements, Dunlop said: “No disrespect to the others, but I think this is the best, to beat some of the best colts around and to break the track record, coming back from a major tendon injury, it doesn’t get better than this.

“She showed an amazing turn of foot again. This is the third time I have had a go at this race, so this is very nice on my CV.

“A lot of her rehabilitation from injury was done here (Ireland) and I can’t tell you how many people have helped us. It doesn’t get much sweeter.”

On future plans, Dunlop said: “We’ve always said this year we will take each race at a time after the injury she has had.

“She seems fine after the race, she’s in the Arc, she’s in the Champion Stakes, obviously Frankel is in that and that is a different level entirely.

“We’ll see. I’ve said before I’d like to go to the Breeders’ Cup, she hasn’t done that and I’d love to take her to America and maybe win in a sixth country.”
