Mascherano Holds Out on Tax

Javier Mascherano has decided against commuting the one-year prison sentence that he received for tax fraud in Spain to a fine.

The Barcelona player refused to pay the 280,000-euro penalty that the judge suggested because he believed the amount to be excessive. Mascherano, did admit to tax fraud and paid the Spanish tax authorities the amount they had claimed before the case even reached court. In the end the former Liverpool player  was only willing to part with 21,000 euros.

Spanish radio station CadenaSER reported that the figure suggested by the Argentina international was accepted by the public prosecutor, but not by the tax authorities' lawyers, who deemed it insufficient and demanded a bigger sum from the investigating judge.

With a one-year jail term hanging over him, Mascherano has already been forced to pay a separate 815,000-euro fine, also return the 1.5 million euros that he owed in tax and cover the legal costs.

The Barcelona star made all the payments quickly and then attempted to cut a deal for a financial arrangement to override the jail sentence, despite the fact that he was never going to have to serve it because it was his first and was for less than two years.

Mascherano's refusal to pay the fine suggested by the judge will delay the trial and means he will have to avoid committing any other crimes over the next year in order to stay out of prison.

Neymar Starts Fraud Case in Madrid

Brazilian football star Neymar and his father have arrived at a Spanish court where they are due to give evidence.

It is in relation to allegations of corruption and fraud surrounding Neymar's transfer to FC Barcelona.

Barcelona said it paid €57m (£43m) for Neymar in 2013 but investigators say the fee was closer to €83m and Barcelona concealed part of the deal.

The current and former president of the club denied wrongdoing at the court in Madrid on Monday.

Barcelona says Neymar's parents received €40m and his former club, Santos, was paid €17m.

The case was brought by Brazilian third-party investment fund DIS, which owned 40% of the Brazilian player's sports rights.

DIS alleges it was financially harmed by the transfer when it received €6.8m of Santos's €17m fee and argues it was deprived of its full share.

Barcelona Football Club President Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell appeared at the court in Madrid on Monday, insisting they had acted correctly. In a statement on Monday, the club said they had repeated in court what they had said last year.

"They are not worried and said they have confidence in justice," it added.

They are also accused in a separate case of defrauding the Spanish tax office of an estimated €13m. They deny the allegations.

Neymar's mother is also expected in court.

Judge Jose de la Mata was expected to decide whether both parents should give evidence in person.

Neymar's move to Barcelona has been a big success on the pitch. The striker became part of a goal-scoring trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

In 2015, Neymar, 23, helped the club win five trophies and came third in the Fifa Ballon d'Or competition. He also scored in the Uefa Champions League final against Juventus.

But he has also encountered legal difficulties in Brazil, where a court has frozen $47m (£33m) of his assets in connection with suspected tax evasion between 2011 and 2013.

Barca Battle Back to Beat Bilbao

Goals from Neymar and Luis Suárez helped Barcelona fight back to beat Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Despite leading 2-1 after the first leg of their rematch of last year’s final, Bilbao dominated most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead on the night after Inaki Williams’s 12th-minute goal.

The second half, however, was all Barcelona’s after Suárez calmed the home fans with the equaliser in the 53rd minute.

Visibly tired from their first-half efforts, Bilbao wilted before Gerard Piqué and Neymar scored to make it 5-2 on aggregate with less than 10 minutes left.

“We went out with a good advantage but then conceding made it complicated for us,” Suárez said. “It was a poor first half from us but then we went out with a different attitude and that made the difference.”

Barcelona Back on Top

Barcelona leapfrogged Atlético Madrid to go top of La Liga after Lionel Messi’s acrobatic volley secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against a tenacious Málaga on Saturday.

Munir El Haddadi, deployed up front in place of the injured Neymar, put Barça ahead in the second minute at the Rosaleda Stadium on the south coast after smart work from Luis Suárez.

However, the visitors were unable to exert their customary control and 12th-placed Málaga, whose relentless pressing unsettled the Spanish and European champions, netted a deserved equaliser in the 32nd minute.

Javier Mascherano surrendered possession in a dangerous area and the ball fell to the midfielder Juanpi, whose shot was deflected in off the former Liverpool player as he slid across to block.

Messi was back in the side after sitting out Wednesday’s 2-1 Copa del Rey triumph at Athletic Bilbao as a precaution but the Ballon d’Or winner was largely anonymous in the first half.

Barça were much improved in the second period and took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute when Messi cracked Adriano’s cross past the home goalkeeper, Carlos Kameni.

The Argentina captain was falling away from the ball as it dropped and he caught it perfectly on the volley to send it arrowing into the corner for his 11th goal of an injury-disrupted campaign.

The Barça keeper, Claudio Bravo, then did well to palm away a shot from Ignacio Camacho in the 73rd minute and Kameni denied Messi a second with a superb one-handed save two minutes from time.

“We perhaps didn’t deserve to be drawing 1-1 at the break considering what we did and what they did in the first half,” Barça’s captain, Andrés Iniesta, told Spanish television.

“We didn’t feel comfortable and Málaga were very well organised and made the most of it when we gave the ball away,” added the Spain international. “It shows how difficult it is to win in La Liga.”

Messi Scores Granada Hat-Trick

Getty Images
Lionel Messi’s first hat trick of the season helped Barcelona beat Granada 4-0 and take the top spot in the Spanish league on Saturday. Messi scored twice within the first 15 minutes at the Camp Nou, and added his third in the second half as Barcelona cruised to victory. Neymar completed the scoring with seven minutes remaining .

The victory lifted Barcelona one point above Atlético Madrid, who play at fifth-place Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Barcelona will have a game in hand after the 19th round this weekend. Third-placed Real Madrid trailed Barcelona by five points. Barcelona had drawn four of their last six matches but were coming off a 4-1 win over city rival Espanyol in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey.

“I’m very satisfied with how the team played today,” Barcelona’s coach, Luis Enrique, said. “Everybody was focused from the beginning. The players knew how important it was to win these three points.”

Barcelona dominated Granada, who were only 17th in the 20-team La Liga table. Messi and Neymar got the goals but Luis Suárez also played well and had chances to score. “We could have scored more,” Barcelona defender Aleix Vidal said. “But the main thing was to get the three points. We are back in the lead, now we’ll see what happens in the other matches.”

Messi found the net from close range after a pass from Arda Turan, then bagged his second six minutes later by striking an open net after a pass by Suárez. Messi completed his hat-trick after Neymar struck the post and the ball rebounded to the Argentinian inside the area for his ninth league goal of the season. It was Messi’s 33rd career hat-trick. He has a strong chance of winning a record fifth Ballon d’Or on Monday, from a shortlist which includes Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo. Neymar sealed Barcelona’s victory from close range, scoring his 15th league goal to tie Suárez as the competition’s leading scorer.

Dani Alves, who this week called the Spanish media “garbage” for the way it covers soccer, came off the bench in the second half and was loudly cheered by the Barcelona fans.

The club initially condemned Alves’ comments, but late on Friday said it would give its support to the player in case a local association of sports media went ahead with its threat to sue the Brazilian right back

Prosecutors Request Neymar Charges

Spanish prosecutors have reportedly requested that Neymar be charged on two counts of fraud and corruption relating to his move to Barcelona during the summer of 2013.

Quoting the radio station Cadena Ser, Marca reported that prosecutors have also asked for charges to be brought against the Barça president, Josep Maria Bartomeu; former president, Sandro Rosell; Neymar’s father, who is also his son’s agent; two directors of the Brazilian striker’s former club Santos; and the two football clubs themselves.

The prosecutors acted on legal proceedings brought by the Brazilian investment fund DIS, which has accused the defendants of fraud, claiming it should have received 40% of the payment that Barcelona paid Santos for the player.

DIS, which held 40% of Neymar’s sports rights when he was in Brazil, claims it only received that percentage for €17.1m that Santos was allegedly paid for the Brazilian when, according to high court investigations, the deal cost €83.3m (£62m).

The defendants also stand accused of corruption over allegations that Neymar, despite being under contract at DIS – and without informing the fund - signed a deal with Barcelona worth €40m to join the team as soon as he was a free agent.

At the same time, Neymar is at the centre of an investigation into alleged tax fraud over the move in which Barcelona have previously made a supplementary payment of almost €13m to the Spanish authorities in order to cover what they described as a difference in “interpretation”.

The case is based on the investigating judge’s allegation that Barcelona’s claim to have paid Santos €17.1 and €40m to the company run by Neymar’s father was false. Instead, Barcelona were accused of having paid over €80m for the Brazil striker and making a series of different payments that the investigator considered to actually be part of the player’s salary. Prosecutors alleged that the Spanish exchequer had been defrauded of €12.7m in taxes.

Neymar has previously declared himself “sick and tired” of accusations his family improperly profited from his transfer and said there was “nothing illegal” in his contract with Barcelona.

Bartomeu and Rosell could face prison sentences of two years and three months over the tax case, and seven years respectively, while prosecutors also want the club to face a fine of €22.2m.

Barcelona have not yet offered any public statement but have repeatedly declared their innocence as has Bartomeu. Rosell resigned as president in January 2014, citing an “unfair and reckless accusation of misappropriation” in regards to the case.

In another action, a Brazilian court has frozen €42m in assets belonging to Neymar over tax evasion allegations.

Spoils Shared in Barcelona

Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez both hit the woodwork as Barcelona were held 0-0 by Espanyol in a hard-fought derby that could see Atlético Madrid go top of La Liga if they beat the bottom side Levante later on Saturday.

Barça set a Spanish record of 180 goals in 2015 but their normally prolific attack drew a blank against their local rivals who were strong in the challenge, especially in the first half, and succeeded in disrupting their play.

Messi hit the crossbar with a 30-yard free kick in the first half while Suárez, who has 26 goals this season, was surprisingly wasteful in front of an open goal in the second half with his shot hitting the post.

Barça have 39 points, a point more than Atlético, with both having played 17 games. Third-placed Real Madrid are on 36 points and are away to Valencia on Sunday.

Fans Protest as Western Sydney Win

Western Sydney extended their winning streak to five games thanks to a 2-0 win over Central Coast on Sunday, both goals coming after a section of Wanderers fans staged their predicted protest by walking out of the ground.

Nearly 1,000 members of the club’s active supporter group, the Red and Black Bloc, filed out of Central Coast Stadium at the 30-minute mark in protest against Football Federation Australia for what they perceive as poor handling of stadium bans.

Following the walkout, Mitch Nicholls set up Brendon Santalab’s opener and slotted the second to lift the Wanderers to second place on the A-League table and on equal points with leaders Melbourne Victory.

The clash at Central Coast Stadium was the first the side have won at the Gosford venue since their inaugural season in 2012-13.

This encounter will perhaps be remembered more for the protest, but for those of the 10,519 crowd that remained, it was attacking football at its frenetic best. And Tony Popovic’s men were a class above.

They very nearly opened their account in a frenzied first few minutes when Nicholls miskicked a long-ranged shot wide of an open goal while Mariners custodian Paul Izzo was caught way off his line.

Seven minutes later the playmaker almost atoned, bulging the back of the net before being ruled offside. The returning Romeo Castelen kept the momentum flowing by rattling the post, the ball almost comically rebounding and sailing straight into Izzo’s outstretched arms.

Castelen was a rampant force down the right flank as the Mariners’ back line toiled, but he undermined his own efforts by missing a swag of chances. In the end it was super sub Santalab who made good in the 66th minute, on his first shot and less than 10 minutes after his introduction.

Nicholls set the goal up gorgeously with a dink down the middle for the onrushing striker, who fought off a yellow-shirted defender before making no mistake against Izzo.

The Mariners took back a little of the possession they lost in the first half and made some bold moves on the counter-attack, including one late on when Irish striker Roy O’Donovan was denied by Wanderers keeper Andrew Redmayne in extra-time.

But a bare moment passed before Nicholls cemented the result, latching onto a Joshua Sotirio through ball to fire home.

The Wanderers’ five match winning run was the best since their 10-game streak in 2012-13.

Australia’s football faithful have been vocal and angry this week following News Corp Australia’s publication of names and photos of 198 banned A-League fans, of which nearly half were Wanderers supporters.

Not all Western Sydney fans left, with numerous bays still dotted with red and black shirts. Earlier in the match, the RBB held up banners stating their stance, one of which read: “FFA: Don’t bury your heads in the sand, we’ve listed our demands!”

A depleted Mariners Yellow Army also unfurled their own banner reading: “Sitting in silence like the FFA. No fans = no football.”

The RBB’s walkout followed an identical one from Melbourne Victory’s supporter group the North Terrace, who left Etihad Stadium after half an hour of Saturday night’s 2-1 win over Adelaide United.
