Merseyside Share Derby Honours

Getty Images
Everton remain six points clear of Liverpool after they fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point in a combative Merseyside derby.

Leighton Baines' own goal and Luis Suarez's header were cancelled out by Leon Osman and Steven Naismith in a helter-skelter opening half, with Suarez's injury-time disallowed effort adding late controversy.

Kevin Mirallas created early danger when he weaved his way down the inside-left channel but Martin Skrtel was on hand to cut out his driven cross.

Moments later Jose Enrique skipped free down the left and his delivery found its way to Suarez, whose drilled cross-shot flew in off the back of Baines' leg (14).

If Suarez's celebratory swan dive in front of the home bench angered the Everton faithful, their mood darkened further when the Uruguayan stole in to glance home a header from Steven Gerrard's free-kick (20).

Osman (22) gave the home side an instant lift as Brad Jones' weak punch fell perfectly for the Everton midfielder to slot home from 18 yards, courtesy of a slight deflection off Joe Allen.

Suarez was threatening at the other end while Jones was again unconvincing dealing with a high ball under pressure as both defences looked bereft of confidence.

The Liverpool keeper was helpless when Naismith timed his run perfectly to meet Marouane Fellaini's clipped cross to claim the equaliser with his first goal for Everton (35).

Andre Wisdom's cross just eluded Suarez but Raheem Sterling then produced a horrendous shank when clean through on Tim Howard.

The Everton keeper parried Gerrard's long-range free-kick while Nikica Jelavic, who had struggled all afternoon, planted a free header wide.

A prone Phil Jagielka denied Gerrard a late winner while Baines had to be alert to deny a darting Suarez as ill-will trumped skill in a niggly final quarter.

Suarez thought he had won it deep in added time as he latched onto Sebastian Coates' knockdown, but his flicked finish was ruled out for a debatable offside decision.

Liverpool had fielded five derby debutants - Sterling, Andre Wisdom, Nuri Sahin, Suso and Joe Allen - with Everton having just two in Kevin Mirallas and Naismith.

That may have contributed to what was a first 45 minutes so open it belied its history of being the oldest and longest-running cross-city rivalry in English football.

There was also the sight of Suarez's reaction to the opening goal as he raced to the dug-out to dive full-length in front of Toffees boss David Moyes after his pre-match comments about players going to ground easily.

Ironically, later in the half, it was one of Moyes' own players Phil Neville who was booked for diving on the edge of Liverpool's penalty area.

On Loan Drenthe Disciplined

Royston Drenthe was axed from Everton's FA Cup semi-final squad after being disciplined by the club, the Goodison Park side have confirmed.

The on-loan Real Madrid midfielder, 25, was not selected in manager David Moyes' 18-man party for Saturday's 2-1 Wembley defeat to Liverpool.

Reports in the Sunday newspapers have suggested Drenthe may also cross the Merseyside divide this summer, with Reds boss Kenny Dalglish said to be weighing up a move.

An Everton spokesman said: "Royston Drenthe has been the subject of a disciplinary matter. This has been dealt with internally and the club will be making no further comment."

Holland international Drenthe has impressed in patches since joining the Toffees on loan in August, scoring four goals and laying on seven more.

Nikica Jelavic had given Everton the lead in their Merseyside derby duel at Wembley, only for second-half goals from Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll to send Liverpool through to the final.

Stevie G Treble Sinks Everton

Steven Gerrard marked his 400th Premier League appearance with a brilliant hat-trick as Liverpool outclassed Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Reds captain had been struggling with a hamstring injury but produced a virtuoso display to end his side's run of three straight league defeats.

Gerrard opened the scoring with a superb lofted finish and doubled the lead with a powerful close-range drive.

He completed the victory by sweeping in after linking up with Luis Suarez.

The result - Liverpool's first league win since 31 January - sees Kenny Dalglish's side close to within two points of sixth-place Newcastle.

Everton remain ninth on 37 points having missed the chance to leapfrog their local rivals.

David Moyes celebrates 10 years in charge at Goodison Park on Wednesday but the headlines will belong to Liverpool and their skipper.

It was one of the few occasions that Gerrard and Suarez have started together this season and they showed what their team had been missing.

The pair, along with the impressive Andy Carroll, combined to ensure a miserable night for Everton and Moyes.

Liverpool v Everton - Preview

Liverpool will be aiming to halt a run of poor form in the Premier League when they take on an Everton side preparing to celebrate David Moyes' tenth anniversary as manager.

The Reds have achieved one of their ambitions for the season after lifting the Carling Cup last month to bring to an end a six-year trophy drought, while Kenny Dalglish insists progress is being made by the club as a whole.

However, a third straight league defeat at the weekend left Liverpool on 39 points from 27 games, with a paltry return of 30 goals, and captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that is 'not good enough'.

Having been beaten by Manchester United,Arsenal and Sunderland, Dalglish's men have slipped from top-four contenders to mid-table obscurity, just a couple of points ahead of their Merseyside rivals and a host of other clubs.

A return to Wembley in the FA Cup is very much within reach, ahead of a quarter-final against Stoke at the weekend, but for now they will be focusing on Tuesday's derby and an opportunity to revive their fortunes ahead of the run-in.

Victory would leave Liverpool ten points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal and just about keep their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League alive, although that is something Everton will be very keen to prevent.

The Toffees have enjoyed a fine run of form over the past couple of months, moving through to the last eight of the FA Cup themselves and climbing to ninth in the league on the back of seven games unbeaten.

A 1-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday put Everton within striking distance of Liverpool and everyone at the club will be determined to provide Moyes with an early anniversary present.

The Scot took charge at Goodison Park on 14th March 2002, and the plaudits he has received for the job he has done over the past decade have been richly deserved.

Moyes is now desperate to push on even further and has targeted some silverware, but the immediate aim will be to secure local bragging rights.
Team news

Gerrard is set to return to the starting line-up for Liverpool after coming off the bench in the weekend defeat at Sunderland after recovering from a hamstring problem.

The likes of Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing could also be pushing for starts if Dalglish decides to freshen up his misfiring forward line.

Right-back Glen Johnson has missed the last two matches with a niggle but will be assessed again on Tuesday, while fellow defender Daniel Agger is still missing with a cracked rib.

Midfielder Lucas Leiva remains a long-term absentee with a knee problem.

Everton have winger Steven Pienaar available again for the trip to Anfield and he could come straight back into the side.

Pienaar, who is on loan from Tottenham, returns to the Toffees squad after being ineligible for the 1-0 win over his parent club on Saturday.

Midfielder Jack Rodwell and defender Phil Jagielka made their first-team comebacks from injury as substitutes in that game and could be in line for recalls to the starting XI.

Midfielder Darron Gibson (knee) has still not recovered from a knee injury.
