Let Friedel Reign Under 19's

Brad Friedel will take his first steps in management as head coach of the United States Under-19s.

The former Tottenham, Aston Villa, Blackburn and Liverpool goalkeeper ended his playing career in the summer at the age of 44.

Friedel earned 82 caps for the United States during a 13-year international career and has assisted various national youth team camps, as well as working with players at Tottenham’s academy.

“I look forward to the opportunity to help develop our young players into professionals and full internationals,” Friedel said.

“The last four years I have focused my coaching at the academy and development levels, and I’m excited to work with the entire group of committed youth national yeam staff members to increase our levels of development here in the United States.”

Chelsea v Maccabi Tel Aviv - Preview

Chelsea will look to put their Premier League woes behind them as they kick off their Champions League campaign against Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho's side have picked up just four points from their opening five league games, losing three times, and the distraction of a European fixture on Wednesday night will be a welcome one.

After falling at the last-16 stage against Paris Saint-Germain last season, the Blues will be targeting an improved performance in the competition this time around.

Indeed, it is believed the exit to the French champions played a significant part in Mourinho altering his approach to enable his side to peak later in the season and therefore be better prepared to compete for the Champions League at the latter end of the season.

Meanwhile, the visitors, managed by former Blues midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic, who guided Watford to promotion last season, are making their first appearance in the group stages for 11 years after beating Basel on away goals in a play-off.

Radamel Falcao has a minor problem and will miss Wednesday's Group G encounter, although his absence is expected to be for one game only, while playmaker Oscar is available following a knee injury.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out for around three months following knee surgery, so Asmir Begovic will continue in goal, while defender Papy Djilobodji is not in the Champions League squad.

Mourinho may choose to freshen up his starting XI, however, due to his side's recent poor form and with a key Premier League clash with Arsenal in prospect on Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, are without Israel international full-back Eliazer Dasa, who is suspended for the clash at Stamford Bridge.

This is the first time these teams have played against each other.

Chelsea have played two matches against opposition from Israel before, failing to win either leg against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Cup 2nd Round in 01/02 (D1 L1).

The Blues have only lost once in their last 35 home Champions League matches in the Group Stage.

Diego Costa didn't score a single goal in seven Champions League appearances last season with Chelsea after netting eight goals in nine games with Atletico Madrid in the previous campaign.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are making their second appearance in the Champions League group stages - the first one came in the 2004/05 campaign when they finished bottom of their group with one win (D1 L4).

No Israeli club has ever made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They've won only four of their 24 games in the group stages of the competition, with all four of these wins coming at home.

Anfield Finale for Gerrard

Steven Gerrard will bid an emotional farewell to Anfield as Liverpool face Crystal Palace on Saturday Night Football.

It will be the 34-year-old’s final home match for the Reds after making more than 700 appearances over a 17-year spell. He will then finish his Liverpool career at Stoke on May 24 before jetting off to join MLS side LA Galaxy.

The Reds will be hoping to give Gerrard a winning send-off at Anfield after losing three of their last four matches to slip out of contention for a top-four finish.

Liverpool have only lost one of their previous 14 home league games against Crystal Palace but were beaten 3-1 at Selhurst Park earlier in the season.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard expects his final game at Anfield on Saturday to be emotional

Palace are still in with a slim chance of finishing in the top half of the table if they win their final two games, but are also looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat.

Gerrard will be given a guard of honour and is likely to start alongside Jordan Henderson in midfield as manager Brendan Rodgers expects to have the same squad which drew at Chelsea last weekend.

After being sidelined by a hamstring injury for five weeks, defender Mamadou Sakho trained this week, as did striker Mario Balotelli.

Crystal Palace have a clean bill of health and academy winger Sullay Kaikai could be among several youngsters to make the trip to Merseyside.

Crystal Palace have found the back of the net in each of their last six Premier League matches against the Reds, including exactly three goals in their last two.

Palace have scored more goals in their past six league games against Liverpool (11) than the previous 19 (10).

Of Gerrard’s 92 Premier League assists, 51 have arrived at home. Only three players (Ryan Giggs 84, Dennis Bergkamp 66 and Frank Lampard 52) have provided more assists at home for a single club than the Liverpool captain has in the Premier League.

However, Gerrard has recorded just one assist this campaign, his lowest total since his debut season in the Premier League in 1998/99 (0 in 12 games).

Simon Mignolet and Jordan Henderson could make their 53rd appearance of the campaign in all competitions, more than any other Premier League player has managed.

Jason Puncheon (12) has had a hand in more Premier League goals than any other Crystal Palace player this season (five goals, seven assists).
