O'Sullivan Wins Welsh Open

Ronnie O'Sullivan won seven frames in a row to beat Neil Robertson 9-5 and win his fourth Welsh Open title.

Australia's Robertson, 34, had won the first two frames of the best-of-17 final and extended his lead to 5-2 during the first session in Cardiff.

But 40-year-old O'Sullivan moved to 5-3 before the break before he won the next six frames to clinch the win.

The five-time world champion sealed victory with a break of 141 to move level with John Higgins on four titles.

Englishman O'Sullivan had caused controversy earlier in the week when he turned down the opportunity of a 147 break, making 146 instead, and spoke about his boredom at tournaments.

But he said he had a "fantastic week" in Cardiff and would now be resting before the World Championships in April.

"I feel shattered," O'Sullivan, who also won last month's Masters, told BBC Sport.

"I need a month of just relaxing, recharge the batteries and give Sheffield a good push, that is the one that everyone wants.

"I am not eligible for any other tournaments as I did not qualify, so my cue will be chilling out for a month or so."

The 2007 champion Robertson, who was described by O'Sullivan as "the best player in the world", pinpointed the ninth frame as the key moment in the match.

"Once he got his tail up and the momentum it was hard to wrestle it back from him," said the world number three.

"Everyone knows he is a terrific front runner and he pulled away and finished the match off in style.

"I made mistakes and that is what happens when you are put under pressure. The few frame spell when he went from 5-3 to 6-5 up, I had opportunities but that is where he got away and played terrific stuff."

Q School Stressful - Paul Dunne

Paul Dunne has confessed that he found the final round of Qualifying School more stressful than his Open adventure earlier this year.

The Wicklow man was famously tied for the Open lead going into the final round before falling down the order at St Andrews in July.

Ahead of the last round of European Tour qualifying in Girona today, Dunne sat in 12th knowing that the top 25 plus ties would collect a card for next season.

After finishing tied for 13th spot, the 22-year-old told RTÉ 2fm’s Game on: “It’s different. You’ve to finish in the top 25 this week, you’re just trying to do as well as you can.

“But then going into today was a bit weird because I was in 12th.

“You don’t know whether to try to push on and go forward or play more conservative and just to try stay in the top 25 so it’s a different mindset.

“It was a difficult one for me to really know how to think about how I want to play.

“Mentally, it was more difficult to know what to take on and what not to. It played a lot of mind games with me.

“This one was probably more stressful and the other one [The Open] was more exciting.”
“This one was probably more stressful and the other one was more exciting"

Qualifying School consisted of 14 rounds, including six this week and the Greystones man admitted the schedule was taking its toll.

“[I’m] wrecked, to the honest,” he said before revealing he plans to play in South Africa and Australia in the next fortnight.

“The first five rounds weren’t too bad but today was quite stressful, start to finish, just trying to get through the line.

“It’s great, it’s been a long few months trying to get through so I’m glad it’s finally over.

“If you looked at it simply, all I had to do was finish in the top 20 three in tournaments in a row.

"When you break it down and put it in a simpler term it seems a lot more achievable.

“I knew if I played well for three weeks I’d get through without much hassle but the last few stages were a bit more stressful than I would have liked.

“I played well around the tougher courses, the tougher courses suited me more. I was delighted to finally get over the line.”

Nihao Atletico Madrid

A Chinese conglomerate has bought a 20% stake in the Spanish champions Atlético Madrid. The Dalian Wanda Group purchased the stake in the La Liga club for €45m (£34.4m).

A statement from the club read: “Wanda Group’s capital contribution in the club will allow Atlético to significantly shore up its balance sheet, as well as accelerate the growth of its brand globally.

“Both parties have agreed that the transaction will be implemented through a rights issue, in which all of the cash provided by the Wanda Group will be injected in the club, thus benefiting all existing shareholders.

“To this end, the Wanda Group has committed to subscribe a number of shares representing, after completion of the capital increase proposed which the club’s board of directors will immediately submit to the general shareholders’ meeting, a 20% equity share of Atlético Madrid through a €45m investment.

“Wanda Group is a leading Chinese conglomerate operating in sectors such as entertainment, hotels and real estate with an extensive footprint in its domestic market and strong growth in Europe and the US.

“Furthermore, Wanda Group has a deep knowledge and a long-standing presence in Chinese football, where it was the main sponsor of the Chinese Super League for several seasons.”

The Atlético president Enrique Cerezo, one of the club’s leading shareholders, was thrilled with Wanda’s decision to invest in the Madrid side.

“This is magnificent for our club,” he said. “That a company like Wanda becomes a shareholders of Atlético is fantastic for the team and for all of our fans.

“We are going to be able to do a lot more things with Wanda on board. Wanda’s investment will be very important for the economy of the club.”

As part of the agreement, Atlético and Wanda will work together towards opening three football schools in China. Atlético will also be invited to play in China every year and the Spanish club will provide special training programmes in Madrid for Chinese youngsters.

Atlético, coached by the Argentinian Diego Simeone since 2011, won their first La Liga title in 18 years last season and finished runners-up behind Real Madrid in the 2013-14 Champions League.

The Rojiblancos are third in the Primera Division standings at the halfway stage of the season.

Atlético have loaned their Uruguay forward Cristian Rodríguez to Parma until the end of the season.

Rodríguez helped Atlético win the Spanish league last season, but has fallen out of favour since playing for Uruguay at last summer’s World Cup.
