Wales v France - Preview

Winger Alex Cuthbert replaces Tom James in one of three Wales changes to the starting XV.

The other changes come in the pack, as flanker Dan Lydiate replaces Justin Tipuric and Bradley Davies stands in for injured lock Luke Charteris.

Winger Djibril Camara makes his debut in one of five changes for France.

Scrum-half Maxime Machenaud, flanker Antoine Burban, lock Paul Jedrasiak and prop Rabah Slimani are the other four fresh faces for Les Bleus.

Warren Gatland
"Everyone talks about French flair and where has the French flair gone? In the past, they had absolute world-class quality players in attack.

"The reason is not so much French flair any more - it's not because they haven't got the players - it's just teams defensively are so organised. There is just no space on the field.

"You get breaks in the game. They are made by someone missing a tackle or someone making a system error - that's where the breaks are. At this level, not many players make mistakes any more and not many players miss tackles.

"Where's the flair gone? Well, we are all trying to be innovative and hopefully trying to create space, but the more you try to be creative in attack, the better teams become defensively as well."

Head-to-head
Wales have won their last four Tests against France. This is their best run since they won six in succession between 1952-1957.

France's last win over Wales came in the World Cup semi-final in 2011. They won 9-8 as Wales had Sam Warburton sent off.

Brice Dulin's try in last year's encounter was the first France had scored against Wales since their 28-9 win in the Six Nations in 2011.
Wales

Wales are unbeaten in their last six Six Nations games (W5 D1), their best run since winning eight in a row between 2007-09.

France have won three Six Nations matches in a single tournament once in the last four years (2014).

They have lost on their last four trips to the Principality Stadium - this includes two games in the 2015 World Cup against Ireland and New Zealand.

France have had the most carries (224) and made the most metres (795) in the 2016 tournament.

Wales Benefit from Biggar Recovery

Dan Biggar has been passed fit to play in an unchanged Wales team for Saturday’s Six Nations meeting with Scotland in Cardiff.

Biggar limped off midway through the first half of last weekend’s 16–16 draw with Ireland in Dublin after suffering a sprained ankle, and was replaced by Rhys Priestland.

He trained with the Wales squad on Thursday and the head coach Warren Gatland said: “He had to get through today’s training.

“He has made a miraculous recovery. The boys were joking and calling him Lazarus and stuff. He got through training today and looked sharp. We feared the worst after the game.

"I spoke to the medics, who thought that the injury was a three to five-week injury, but the scan came back clear and he has worked really hard in terms of his recovery.”

With Biggar playing, the only change is on the bench where the Cardiff Blues back Gareth Anscombe, who was ruled out of the Ireland game because of a tight hamstring, replaces Alex Cuthbert.

Biggar was Wales’ star performer during the World Cup and his return to fitness is a major boost for Gatland.

Elsewhere, the coach has again selected the captain Sam Warburton at blindside flanker, with Justin Tipuric wearing the N07 shirt, while the Scarlets props Rob Evans and Samson Lee have another opportunity to impress following a strong scrummaging performance against Ireland.

The centre Jonathan Davies wins his 50th cap and lines up alongside his midfield partner Jamie Roberts for the 41st time in Tests, with Anscombe offering versatile back division cover off the bench.

“It’s great to be able to name an unchanged side, with Dan coming through, fit and ready to play,” Gatland said. “It is a reward for some players who put in a great shift in Dublin, while we will be asking a little more of some of the players as well.”

Wales have not lost to Scotland since Gatland took charge in 2008, winning eight successive Tests, while the Scots last triumphed in Cardiff 14 years ago.

Although Wales saw their grand slam and triple crown hopes disappear with the draw in Dublin, they still appear well placed for a major title push

Three of their four remaining games are at home – they also face England at Twickenham on 12 March – with Scotland being followed at the Principality Stadium by France and Italy.

Playing Days Over - Shane Williams

Former Wales wing Shane Williams says his playing days are over after rejecting an offer from Merthyr RFC.

The Welsh Championship club have signed Wales forward Andy Powell, but failed to recruit former British and Irish Lions star Williams.

Wales' record try-scorer hopes to combine his television punditry with a coaching career in the future.

"I miss playing rugby but those days are gone. Merthyr was a little step too far," Williams told BBC Wales Sport.

"I was approached by [coach] Lee Jarvis and [benefactor] Sir Stanley Thomas to see whether I would like to be involved in a coaching capacity as well as a playing capacity.

"It was very tempting and it's a good club that's looking to progress but, for the time being, I'm very busy with family commitments.

"I do want to be a coach. Is it next week? No it's not. Maybe in the near future you'll see me coaching but, for the moment, I think I've got enough on my plate."

The former Ospreys wing would have been the highest-profile signing so far for Merthyr, who also attempted but failed to recruit Wales hooker Matthew Rees.

"He [Williams] was too committed with his television work," Merthyr's benefactor Thomas said.

"He really wanted to come here, as did Matthew Rees, who I think has made a big mistake by not joining us because ours was a three-year contract and he's got a one-year deal with Cardiff Blues.

"Shane would have been the capture... we've been talking now for two weeks, an excellent offer was on the table for him. However, he's just too committed."

Williams played in four Tests for the Lions, scoring two tries, and played for clubs including Amman United RFC, Neath, Ospreys and Mitsubishi Dynaboars in Japan.

He returned home earlier this year after three years in Japanese rugby, and said his focus would be on coaching, as well as punditry.

Multi-millionaire Thomas, the brother of Cardiff Blues chairman Peter, has invested in Merthyr to help the club strengthen on and off the field in order to gain admission to the Premiership.

The semi-pro Premiership will be expanded from 12 to 16 clubs from 2016-17, with the top four Championship sides with an A licence going up at the end of next season.

Bayonne Sack Phillips

Mike Phillips has been sacked by his club Bayonne after being accused of turning up for training drunk.

Phillips, capped 77 times by his country, met club officials on Saturday and was told his contract was to be cancelled.

The 31-year-old will receive official confirmation by letter on Monday.

Phillips joined Bayonne from Ospreys in 2011 and was under contract with the French Top 14 club until June 2014.

He left for Wales on Sunday to join up with the national squad ahead of the November internationals.

Phillips appeared before the Bayonne board on Tuesday to answer allegations he turned up to a video analysis session under the influence of alcohol.

Two fellow players, New Zealand back row Dwayne Haare and fly-half Stephen Brett, also had to answer allegations at that meeting and were fined but not suspended.

Phillips was left out of the squad for Friday's Top 14 game against Montpellier, which Bayonne won 24-19.

On Thursday evening Phillips had apologised in French to Bayonne fans "for this situation" on his Twitter account, adding: "I am behind the team wholeheartedly tomorrow night. Good luck."

The British and Irish Lions scrum-half was suspended by Bayonne last year for off-field misconduct and by Wales in July 2011 after a confrontation with a doorman in Cardiff city centre.

Bayonne have not yet officially confirmed the departure of Phillips, who played 39 matches in the Top 14.

Wales coach Warren Gatland showed support for the 77-times capped player when he named him in a 35-man squad earlier this week.

"We will just sit down and have a quiet chat about where his head's at and what he's doing," said Gatland. "But there will be no sanctions for him here in this set-up."

Phillips Faces Bayonne Board

Getty Images
Mike Phillips has been asked to explain himself to Bayonne's directors after allegedly turning up to a video analysis session under the influence of alcohol.

Phillips and two team-mates will meet the board on Tuesday to give their side of events.

The alleged incident occurred the day after the Amlin Cup win over Grenoble.

The 31-year-old British and Irish Lions number nine was suspended by the club in 2012 for off-field misconduct.

Phillips was also suspended from the Wales squad in July 2011 following an incident in Cardiff city centre when he was involved in a confrontation with a doorman.

The 77-times capped former Scarlets, Cardiff Blues and Ospreys player joined Bayonne following the World Cup in the autumn of 2011.

He was a key member of the Lions team that beat Australia 2-1 in the Test series last summer, setting up the opening try for Alex Corbisiero in the decisive third Test match victory in Sydney.

He has also won two Six Nations Grand Slams with Wales in 2008 and 2012.

New Zealanders Wayne Haare and Stephen Brett are the other players who will have to explain their actions to Bayonne board on Tuesday.
