One Wish for Wales Boss

The Wales manager Chris Coleman has one wish at the Euro 2016 draw – avoid England.

Having been placed in the bottom pot after ending a 58-year wait to play at a major tournament, Coleman accepts a tough task is heading Wales’s way whatever the outcome of the draw in Paris on Saturday evening.

But Coleman is keen to avoid an encounter with England, one of the top seeds, and all the hype that a battle of Britain would involve.

“Against anyone on our day, and we’ve proved it, we’re a good team and difficult to play against,” Coleman said after a qualification campaign in which Wales took four points from Belgium, the world’s best team according to the Fifa rankings.

“But, if I’m honest, I’d prefer it if we didn’t play England. That would be viewed as a battle of Britain and there would be a lot of things that go with it that could make it a distraction.

“We will play three games and we don’t want it to all be about one of them.”

Wales’s first qualification since the 1958 World Cup was largely achieved through defensive discipline and the attacking brilliance of Gareth Bale.

Only England, Romania and Spain conceded fewer goals in qualifying as captain Ashley Williams marshalled a defence which conceded only four times in 10 games.

At the other end the Real Madrid forward Bale was extraordinary, providing seven of Wales’s modest-11 goal tally, and his absence from Euro 2016 for any reason is simply unthinkable.

But the suspicion remains that Wales could be dangerous opponents in France; they can be hard to break down but are also capable of finding a vital goal.

“You have to go there with that ambition,” Bale said when asked about making an impact at Euro 2016. “We know we don’t concede too many and we can nick a goal against anybody, so there’s no reason we can’t.

“Obviously you might need a bit of luck along the way, but we’ll be going there trying to upset a few people.”

Preview - Republic of Ireland v Bosnia

Republic of Ireland host Bosnia-Herzegovina in Dublin on Monday with their Euro 2016 qualifying play-off with the tie delicately balanced.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the fog in Zenica on Friday evening, a result that gives the Republic a slim advantage heading into the return clash at the Aviva Stadium.

Republic manager Martin O'Neill knows that a goalless draw will be enough to see his team progress to next summer's European championship in France.

However, O'Neill has warned his players that relying on their away goal to seal their place in France next summer would be a "recipe for disaster".

"Obviously, it would be terrific if we could do it, but I have to be very, very mindful of the fact that we are a long way away from doing that," he said.

"We have to put things into perspective: Bosnia are capable of scoring, they could wipe that advantage, that away goal that we have within minutes of the game, and then suddenly they are on the front foot.

"If we think that we can keep them out for 90 minutes and camp ourselves just outside our own penalty area, that would be a recipe for disaster.

Martin O'Neill believes his players can't afford to rely on their away goal against Bosnia

"We have to consider being really on the front foot, genuinely, and going and trying to win this game, and that's it.

"If you'd thought that we'd have to win in the Aviva for the final time, you probably would have taken that."

One player the Republic will need to keep a close eye on is Bosnia winger Edin Visca, who produced an impressive display in the first leg at the Bilino Polje Stadium, creating Edin Dzeko's late equaliser.

"They raid down the right-hand side because they've got a very, very fine right winger," O'Neill added. "What they want to do is try to get it out to the little lad, who is exceptionally talented.

"I think he could cause problems to anybody."

Forward Shane Long and defender John O'Shea trained with the Republic squad on Sunday morning and the duo could now be fit to face Bosnia after knee and hamstring injuries respectively.

Meanwhile, Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters will be back from suspension after missing the game in Zenica.

However, Daryl Murphy, who led the line in Long's absence in the first leg, was the only man to sit out the warm-up, while veteran goalkeeper Shay Given misses the match with a knee injury.

Preview - Bosnia v Republic of Ireland

Hull City midfielder David Meyler has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina with a knee injury.

The 26-year-old picked up the injury in a collision with team-mate Marc Wilson in training ahead of the first leg.

Meyler is expected to be out of action for up to eight weeks after an MRI scan revealed that he had suffered a grade 2 tear of his right knee medial ligament.

Shane Long will miss Friday's first leg to get treatment on a foot injury.

Striker Long, who hit the winner in last month's shock victory over Germany, has remained with his club Southampton, but has not been ruled out of Monday's return leg in Dublin.

Charlton keeper Stephen Henderson has been called up after Keiren Westwood and Rob Elliot were both ruled out.

Newcastle's Elliot has been forced to pull out because of a thigh injury while Sheffield Wednesday's Westwood misses out after a pre-existing ankle injury flared up in Republic training on Wednesday.

With veteran Shay Given also ruled out by injury, Darren Randolph is expected to start ahead of David Forde.

West Ham keeper Randolph played in the Republic's last two qualifiers, replacing Given against Germany and starting in the defeat by Poland.

With Long missing and Jonathan Walters suspended, Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy looks likely to start in Zenica.

After hitting the winning against Germany, Long sustained a foot injury in the defeat by Poland three days later.

Long has not played since and recently underwent an injection in his foot.

Reading defender Paul McShane is absent through injury while manager Martin O'Neill is waiting for news on whether John O'Shea will be fit for Monday's second leg in Dublin.

O'Shea, like Stoke striker Walters, is suspended for the first leg but the Sunderland defender is also a doubt for the Aviva Stadium contest because of a hamstring injury.

With O'Shea suspended, Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark and Stoke's Marc Wilson appear the candidates to be drafted into the Republic defence.

Midfielder Alan Judge, who stayed at Brentford this week to continue his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury, has joined up with the Irish squad

Mehmed Baždarević, Bosnia and Herzegovina coach
We will not change our game plan because of their problems with injured goalkeepers. Ireland are without some of their very good players but they do have the capacity to replace them. After training, we will decide if we will play in our standard 4-3-3 formation, or make some changes.

Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager
Our missing players have been the talk of the week, even before we gathered as we knew we were missing players due to suspension. This all plays a part but it's how you cope with it and in two weeks' time, no one will remember who was injured or suspended. We have talked about the players who can't make it here but we have to deal with the people we have here and to be ready for the challenge, it's a big challenge.

Republic Face Bosnia Herzegovina

The Republic of Ireland have been paired with Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Euro 2016 play-offs.

The first leg will take place in Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 12, 13 or 14, with the return game on November 15, 16 or 17.

The winner on aggregate - using away goals if necessary - will then go into the main tournament draw, which will take place on December 12.

Martin O'Neill's men missed the chance of automatic qualification when they were beaten 2-1 by Poland in their final group game, leaving them third in the group and forcing them to settle for a play-off spot.

Bosnia finished third behind Belgium and Wales in Group B but took four points off Chris Coleman's side, drawing 0-0 in Cardiff last October and winning 2-0 in Zenica earlier this month.

Five of their seven previous attempts at making major finals via the play-off route in the last 50 years have ended in heartache.
