Schweinsteiger Fitness Fight for EURO

Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely to play for Manchester United again this season, but Louis van Gaal believes the Germany captain could yet make Euro 2016.

Injury has restricted the World Cup winner to just 31 appearances since he swapped Bayern Munich for Old Trafford.

The last of those came in the derby win at Manchester City before an international break when Schweinsteiger suffered a knee ligament tear during training with Germany before the friendly with England.

That blow came after he had recently returned from a two-month knee injury, with this current complaint set to rule the midfielder out for the rest of United’s season if not perhaps this summer’s European Championship in France.

“I don’t think Schweinsteiger shall play this season – I think, next season, he is prepared,” Van Gaal said.

“Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship, I cannot predict. It is possible, but then that is also in our favour because then he is fit for the new competition.”

Manchester United v Liverpool - Preview

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal feels his side "must deliver" in their Europa League last-16 second leg tie against Liverpool on Thursday.

A desperately poor performance from the Red Devils saw them lose 2-0 in the first leg at Anfield last week.

United have failed to win in their last three matches in all competitions.

"It starts with the players, of course, but it starts also with the fans. They have a lot of impact on the pitch," said Dutchman Van Gaal.

The meeting against rivals Liverpool comes a week before the 32nd anniversary of one of their greatest comebacks.

Trailing 2-0 to Barcelona in the European Cup Winners' Cup, United won 3-0 at Old Trafford to reach the semi-finals.

They were also 2-1 down to Danish side FC Midtjylland after the first leg in the previous round, before winning 5-1 in the second.

"We have to believe in it," said Van Gaal when asked if they can rescue the tie. "I have spoken only with the players about the victory.

"We always owe to the fans a big result because the fans are paying to see that. We have to deliver."

'We can finish the job'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal pointed to the atmosphere at Anfield being the difference for Liverpool

Liverpool last won the competition in 2001 - in its guise as the Uefa Cup - and it remains their only opportunity to win a trophy this season.

Their energetic performance in the first leg allowed them to open up an advantage which boss Jurgen Klopp feels they can keep hold of.

"We know about the job we have to do," said the German. "We will try to play similar or more intensive.

"I am absolutely optimistic [that my team will put in a good performance]. We know that we know how to play them.

"It was a good night for us last week. But at the same time it's only halfway. We'll go into the game confident we can finish the job."

Winger Ashley Young and full-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will not be risked by Manchester United and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is not ready to start.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner returns after missing the first leg through illness but the visitors are still likely to be without defender Martin Skrtel, who has been out with a hamstring injury.

Van Gaal Qualifies for Europa

Manchester United suffered an early exit from the Champions League as they were beaten 3-2 by a superb Wolfsburg side on a night of high drama in Germany.

Anthony Martial put United ahead after 10 minutes, but Naldo equalised before the Bundesliga runners-up went ahead following a delicious 11-pass move that was finished by Vierinha.

A late own goal by Josuha Guilavogui gave United hope, but Naldo found the net shortly after to send the injury-hit three-time European champions out.

CSKA Moscow were unable to pull off a shock win over PSV Eindhoven, and United now face the prospect of playing Europa League football in the new year.

Manager Louis van Gaal wanted to guide United to Champions League glory, but he will have to get used to long trips to far-flung corners of Europe on Thursday nights instead.

United may have been beset by injuries, but Van Gaal cannot use that as an excuse. United were expected to cruise through this group. The Dutchman's critics will now only grow louder.

Without seven first-team regulars, Van Gaal was forced to hand defender Guillermo Varela his full debut.

The Wolfsburg fans did their best to try to make David Moyes' first signing feel uncomfortable and so did the players tearing about the pitch in white and green.

The hosts lived up to their nickname of Die Wolfe and hounded United like a pack of aggressive wolves.

Van Gaal's team were never allowed to settle on the ball. Varela drifted inside, allowing Andre Schurrle a chance to shoot but he fluffed his lines and United breathed again.

Wolfsburg were well on top but somehow found themselves behind in the 10th minute.

Daley Blind found Juan Mata, who carved open the Wolfsburg back four to set Martial free. The Frenchman went into the game in poor form, but his finish was exemplary. He took one touch before rolling the ball past Diego Benaglio.

It was a superb finish, but Wolfsburg equalised with an even better one just three minutes later.

Ricardo Rodriguez whipped in a low cross and Naldo got in front of Chris Smalling before volleying past David de Gea. United were back to square one.

Fellaini almost put them ahead again with a close-range header but Benaglio saved. Wolfsburg went on the attack at a devastating cost for United.

Wolfsburg switched the play from right to left and Schurrle drifted infield before laying the ball off to the sensational Julian Draxler. He glided past Bastian Schweinsteiger and two more United players while playing a one-two with Max Kruse before squaring to Vierinha and he slotted the ball in from close range.

It was a stunning goal, one worthy of a team seemingly bound for a place among Europe's elite.

Draxler drew yet more gasps from the despairing United fans when he wriggled free in the box, but De Gea saved his shot.

United were reeling. They needed the half-time whistle to regroup. Instead they were handed another problem as Darmian had to be replaced by 19-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson because of an injury to the Italian.

United thought they had equalised when Jesse Lingard's ball sailed into the goal, but the referee ruled Mata, who was in an offside position, had interfered with play.

United performed better at the start of the second period.

Memphis Depay drew a save from Benaglio with an acrobatic volley. Wolfsburg still looked dangerous though. De Gea tipped an effort over from Schurrle and Kruse missed a sitter.

Van Gaal threw on Nick Powell for his first game in almost a year.

United supporters' spirits were raised when CSKA took the lead, but PSV soon equalised and Van Gaal's men were heading out. They needed an equaliser and they got it when Guilavogui knocked Fellaini's header into his own net, but just a minute later Naldo headed in to send the locals inside the Volkswagen Arena wild.

United pushed for an equaliser but it did not come. It would not have mattered anyway. PSV's winner in Eindhoven meant United were already out.

Porto v Bayern Munich

Porto will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run in this season’s Champions League when tournament-favourites Bayern Munich visit on Wednesday.

The Portuguese champions are seeking a first semi-final appearance since their 2004 run to the final, when they won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho, against the five-times European champions from Bavaria.

Porto routed Swiss champions Basel 4-0 at home in the last 16, second-leg, having drawn 1-1 in Portugal and they will be looking for a repeat performance. Manager Julen Lopetegui has said his side will not adopt the role of the underdog against Munich.

"We are talking about one of the best Bayern teams in the history of the club," said Lopetegui.

"We have a great respect for Bayern, but we have the ambition to be protagonists. We have a huge challenge ahead of us.”

Bayern are missing a host of stars including wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, plus German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, but the Bundesliga giants could still name five World Cup winners at the Estadio do Dragao.

Philipp Lahm is expected to start in midfield in a game, but the reshuffle may have little impact on a side who stormed into the last eight with a 7-0 demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk.
Team news

Bayern Munich head into their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Porto in the midst of an injury crisis.

Alaba, Benatia, Martinez, Ribery, Robben and Schweinsteiger are all currently injured as boss Pep Guardiola will have to call on some of his fringe players to get past a dangerous Porto side who are yet to taste defeat in the competition this season.

Porto are sweating on the fitness of forwards Jackson Martinez and Cristian Tello ahead of the first leg. Both are struggling with hamstring injuries, while centre-back Ivan Marcano is suspended.

Bayern Munich are odds-on favourites at 3/4, with Porto considered 100/30 outsiders establish a first-leg lead and 13/5 to hold the favourites to a draw. Pep Guardiola’s men head the Champions League outright at 15/8, while their hosts are considered the biggest-priced outsiders left in competitions at 66/1.

Robert Lewandowski is the 4/1 favourite in the first goalscorer betting closely followed by Thomas Muller (9/2), while Jackson Martinez is rated the visitors’ biggest threat at 8/1.
