Airtricity Teams Get Champions Draw

Airtricity League champions Shamrock Rovers have been seeded in the draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the UEFA Champions League.

The Hoops, along with Sligo Rovers, St Patrick's Athletic and Bohemians will enter the UEFA Champions League and Europa League draws in June with the most favourable odds in the history of Irish participation on the European stage.

St Pat's will also be seeded in the draws for both the First and Second Qualifying Rounds of the UEFA Europa League, while Bohemians will be seeded for the Second Qualifying Round as they are exempt from the First Qualifying Round.

By virtue of FC Porto winning the Europa League Cup rather than Sporting Braga, Sligo Rovers - as FAI Ford Cup winners - will be forwarded to the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League.

This is because FC Porto do not require the title holder's place in the Europa League as they have qualified for the Champions League next season.

Ireland is placed 29th on the access/ranking list. This would be the first time ever that an Irish club was exempted from two rounds of a European club competition.

As a result of FK Borac Banja Luka winning the League title in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rovers will now face one of the 17 unseeded sides for a place in the third qualifying round.

The Hoops will face one of the following clubs: Dacia Chisinau (Moldova), FC Pyunik Yerevan (Armenia), FK Borac Banja Luka (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Skonto Riga (Latvia), FC Fehérvár (Hungary), Bangor City (Wales), HB Torshavn (Faroe Islands), Linfield (Northern Ireland), Tobol Kustanai (Kazakhstan), F91 Dudelange (Luxembourg), Flora Tallinn (Estonia), Breidablik (Iceland), FC Valletta (Malta), Neftchi Baku (Azerbaijan), Shkendija Tetovo (FYR Macedonia), Skënderbeu Korçë (Albania) and FK Mogren (Montenegro).

Being seeded will give the Hoops an opportunity to make significant progress in Europe this summer.

Victory in the Second Round would guarantee Shamrock Rovers a minimum of four extra European matches including a play-off for a place in the group stages of the Europa League, if required.

Financially, it would also mean a minimum payment of €550,000 from UEFA - €330,000 of which is already guaranteed - and the club would also garner €130,000 should the Hoops qualify for the next round.

Rovers would also benefit to the tune of a further €90,000 should they fail to qualify for the Champions League group stages and move into the Europa League.

The draws for both stages of the UEFA Europa League will take place on June 20th.

UCD Travel To Tallaght Stadium

UCD travel to Tallaght Stadium on Friday night to take on league leaders Shamrock Rovers. The students will be buoyant mood after Graham Rusk last minute equaliser against St. Patrick's Athletic last Friday. Despite struggling for form at home this season the students have only lost one away game this season and a win on Friday could see them move to eight place in the league.

UCD currently have five points from seven games and are level on points with Galway United. The student however enjoy a superior goal difference and sit eight in the league, three points clear of bottom placed side Drogheda United.

Martin Russell received some good news during the week when Sean Harding was declared fit however Cillian Morrison has suffered a reoccurrence of the ankle injury that has kept him out for the last few weeks.

Looking a head to the game Martin said: "We got a little boost from the Pat's result, with was a deserved point. Everyone wants to play in these games; against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium. We are aware that it's a tough challenge but we look forward to these challenges."

UCD Looks to Saints Trip for Points

UCD travel to Inchicore looking to bounce back from last week's 2-0 defeat to Bohemians. The game at Richmond Park provides a reunion of sorts with St. Patrick Athletic having many a former UCD player now listed on their roster. A win for UCD would see them move to seventh in the league and pull level with St.Pat's on points.

In the last five games UCD have only managed a single point and find themselves in ninth position, two points above Drogheda United in tenth. UCD will be relishing the chance to put some distance between themselves and the struggling Louth team.

With Sean Harding and Cillian Morrison back in training UCD are in an optimistic mood heading into the game, Martin Russell had this to say prior to tomorrow night's game:

"We are looking for a better performance then against Bohemians last week, and with the atmosphere in Richmond Park their will be no better game to bounce back in, we are looking forward to the challenge facing us in Inchicore."

UCD Looking for Bohs Home Win

Following last week’s defeat away to Dundalk Martin Russell will be looking for his teams’ first home win of the season. The students have yet to score a goal at home this season. A home win could lift the students up to 5th place in the table.

UCD last five fixtures have seen only win one game, the opening day fixture against Drogheda United, as well as scoreless draw with Galway United means that UCD sit in 8th place in the league. With 4 points from 5 games they are level with Galway United, in 9th, and three points a head of bottom team Drogheda United.

Martin Russell said today: “Despite Bohemians restructuring they are still able to field a team with league winners and guys that have European experience, our young side is looking forward to that challenge, from with they can learn a great deal.”

Martin Russell will have to make do with out defender Sean Harding, hamstring strain, and forward Cillian Morrison, ankle, for this fixture.

Sporting Fingal to Issue Statement

Liam Buckley, Sporting Fingal

The players of League of Ireland premier division side Sporting Fingal have been told by the club that their contracts have been terminated.

The 2009 FAI Ford Cup holders, who have only been in existence since 2007, were due to play Lisburn Distillery on Monday in the Setanta Sports Cup but they have now withdrawn from the competition.

Thirteen players are currently under contract with the north Dublin club and future participation in the Airtricity League of Ireland is now seriously in doubt.

A statement from the Professional Footballers Assopciation of Ireland expressed its disappointment that contracts, some of which have been signed very recently, are not being honoured.

The organising committee of the Setanta Sports Cup have confirmed that Sporting Fingal have withdrawn from the competition and will be replaced by UCD.

The Students will now face Lisburn Distillery in the First Round First Leg fixture that had initially been scheduled to take place between Sporting Fingal and the Irish League club on Monday, 14 February.

Sporting Fingal are reported to be releasing a statement on the matter later this evening.

Airtricity League in the News

A year ago Ireland’s largest independent energy supplier, Airtricty, agreed a three year deal to sponsor the League of Ireland coinciding with the remaining two years of the Football Association of Irelands’ [FAI] management of the League. At the time of the launch Airtricity Managing Director Kevin Greenhorn explained the company was proud to become title sponsors for the league as it would provide the company “ with an outstanding opportunity to extend our market and brand awareness in keeping with our exciting expansion plans. With over 450,000 active participants, football reaches into every community and at all age levels making it one of the nation’s most popular and passionately supported sports.

By sponsoring the Airtricity League there as a very real opportunity for the company “to forge stronger and lasting connections with real football fans at a grassroots level in communities all over the country.” At the same time making an extremely important financial contribution to one of the country’s leading sporting competitions offering a significant vote of confidence in the future.

For the league the opportunity to welcome Airtricity was recognised by Eamon Naughton Chairman of the National League Executive Committee as it was undoubtedly “a strong endorsement of our league and a huge boost to Irish football. Together with our existing sponsors, Airtricity will help us grow and develop the league. As a league which prides itself on producing top quality young players, we are delighted to be working so closely with one of Ireland’s top, young companies.”

In addition, Airtricity also secured marketing, promotional and branding rights becoming the preferred energy partner of the FAI.

As dawn breaks on the second season of that three year agreement the latest bulletin emanating from Sporting Fingal does not bode well – either for the new club or indeed Irish domestic football. In a statement issued on Thursday Sporting Fingal explained that it had restructured ahead of the 2011 campaign and developed “what it believed to be a viable business plan on a reduced and prudent scale” with new investors and sponsors.

Over recent days however those commitments had not materialised and the club had, for the first time since 2007, not been in a position to pay players’ wages. With an obvious sense of urgency the club was committed to resolving the issue and advised the FAI and the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland [PFAI] accordingly.

Coming on the foot of two Bohemian players instigating a winding up order against the club given their outstanding wages – which the Football Association was finally able to remedy in recent weeks – it highlighted that even the 121 year old was not immune either to the current financial pressures. As part of the effort to save the club there is now a benefit gig organised at The Olympia on February 19th.

In recent weeks Drogheda United launched their share initiative, The Future Starts Here, which is driven by the supporters group who were buoyed by the goodwill and are seeking pledges, priced at €1,000 each, since the launch at the Boyne Valley Hotel. So far 75 shares have been subscribed.

Speaking at the launch, FAI Chief Executive Mr. John Delaney empathised with the club's current plight. "While the trauma of losing games is bad enough, the trauma of potentially losing your club is one that is particularly hard for any supporter to endure ". He also took the opportunity to dispel any doubts regarding the future of Drogheda's home ground, Hunky Dorys Park confirming that the club would continue to play there until such time as it chose to move to an alternative stadium, adding that then and only then could the Windmill Road ground be sold with all proceeds being put into a new home for the club.

The Airtricity League is the top tier of Irish football and dates back to the foundation of the Irish state back in 1922.

Originally established as just one division, the League added a second tier in 1986 and has more recently developed the Newstalk A Championship, Under-20 League, and Futsal League underneath the existing Premier and First divisions. The Airtricity League has been under the control of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) since 2006. As such, the League benefits from the wide range of departments that exist within the FAI, including Commercial, Communications, Legal, Finance, IT and Technical.

The League is run on an operational level by the FAI's Airtricity League department, which is overseen by Airtricity League Director Fran Gavin.

One matter however still rests on the horizon between the Football Association and Ireland (FAI) and Limerick FC and has entered mediation after both parties informed the High Court.

The issue relates to a legal wrangle that emerged last May when the FAI refused the League of Ireland club permission to stage a potentially lucrative friendly with Spanish Giants Barcelona at Thomond Park in July.

At the time the League of Ireland made their decision based on "third party commercial agreements" which "prevented" the organisation from allowing the game to go ahead. The FAI said they couldn’t grant such a friendly because of the long term deals they have in place with third party TV and sporting rights companies involved in summer tournaments at the Aviva Stadium.

Limerick are also not satisfied with the FAI's stance of not allowing friendly games to be played at venues with a 15,000 capacity or more and the club had hoped to turn a profit in the region €100,000 from the Barcelona game – which they had budgeted for such an amount in their licence application at the start of that season.

“The FAI regrets that money spent on this course of action will be lost to the sport. What is decided during the mediation process with Limerick FC could have broader ramifications for the funding and development of football at all levels.”

Limerick owner and chairman Pat O’Sullivan said he wants the situation “sorted out as quickly as possible".

The Airtricity League starts on Friday March 4 and newly-promoted Derry City will hope to get their campaign off to the perfect start when they host Sligo Rovers, while Bray begin against Bohemians, Galway United entertain St. Pat’s, and UCD will make the trip to Dalymount Park to face Sporting Fingal.
