Jose Comments Damage - Filipe Luis

Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis claims Jose Mourinho's comments to the media can have a damaging effect on some players.

Mourinho, who has led the Blues to their worst start to a season for 37 years, has publicly criticised several members of his first-team squad this campaign, including Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic.

Luis joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid for £18m last summer, but failed to command a regular first-team place and was allowed to re-join the Spanish side in July.

Though the Brazil international feels Mourinho's approach is normal, he concedes his behaviour can have a detrimental influence on certain players.

"He has his way of talking to the press, especially when the team loses, which can sometimes be damaging to certain players. Some players benefit from criticism but for others, they don't," Luis said.

"Sometimes he's right and sometimes he's not. Sometimes people think what he says is absurd and sometimes they agree with him. It's the way he is and the way he works - I see it as normal."

Luis started just nine Premier League matches for Chelsea during the 2014/15 season, helping them to win the title as well as the Capital One Cup.

Although the 30-year-old considers his time at Stamford Bridge as a success, he believes Mourinho's decision not to play him in the opening match of the season at Burnley a crucial factor as to why he did not settle at the club.

"I didn't have the chance to play in the first match of the league season and the opportunity to play the first game is key for players at a new club. That made everything more difficult," he added.

"I consider my time with Chelsea a personal triumph," he added. "In one year, I won two titles - one being the Premier League. I have a trophy at home that not many people have and in possibly the most competitive league in the world."
